Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two topics have been studied related to the cooling of the end wall of a turbine passage. The first concerns the development of a method for measuring the adiabatic wall effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient of a film cooling system for protecting a surface from high heating derived from a hot compressible flow. The second concerns the measurement of the heat transfer rate distribution to a turbine cascade end wall in order to choose an appropriate film cooling system. These are related to providing the background to the final phase of the study in which the effectiveness of a film cooling system to cool a turbine end wall will be made combined with the measurement of the aerodynamic losses incurred by such a system. Book excerpt: Summary: Transpiration and film cooling promise to be effective methods of cooling gas-turbine blades; consequently, analytical and experimental investigations are being conducted to obtain a better understanding of these processes. This report serves as an introduction to these cooling methods, explains the physical processes, and surveys the information available for predicting blade temperatures and heat-transfer rates. In addition, the difficulties encountered in obtaining a uniform blade temperature are discussed, and the possibilities of correcting these difficulties are indicated. Air is the only coolant considered in the application of these cooling methods.

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation on a water-cooled gas turbine with blade coolant-passage diameters ranging from 0.100 to 0.500 inch, corresponding to length-to-diameter ratios of 25.5 to 5.1, in various quadrants of the turbine. The investigation was conducted to determine (1) whether coolant-passage length-to-ratio has a significant effect on natural-convection heat-transfer correlation, and (2) whether turbine blade temperatures could be calculated with reasonable accuracy from a theoretical natural-convection heat-transfer correlation.

Book excerpt: Advancements in cooling for applications such as gas turbines components require improved understanding of the complex heat transfer mechanisms and the interactions between those mechanisms. Turbine designers often rely on multiple thermal protection techniques, including internal cooling, external film cooling, and thermal barrier coatings to efficiently cool components and limit the use of coolant. Traditionally, the effectiveness of such cooling technologies is quantified by considering the convection and conduction heat transfer mechanisms separately. The current research considers the combined effects of both internal and external cooling in a single experiment or simulation using a conjugate heat transfer approach. The geometry used for this study is a turbine blade endwall, which is influenced by three-dimensional vortices generated by the passage flow. The experiments and computational simulations include impingement and film cooling as well as conduction through the endwall. Appropriate geometric and flow parameters are properly scaled to ensure engine relevant dimensionless temperatures are obtained. The overall effectiveness, which is a scaled wall temperature, is compared for multiple cases, including different cooling configurations and the implementation of endwall contouring, thermal barrier coatings, and contaminant deposition. The measurements showed that impingement cooling was a larger contributor to the combined overall effectiveness compared to film cooling. The area-averaged contoured endwall overall effectiveness was similar to the flat endwall despite local differences in film cooling effectiveness and impingement effectiveness. The thermal barrier coating significantly increased overall effectiveness by reducing the external heat transfer. Contaminant deposition increased surface roughness, which increased external heat transfer to the endwall.Computational simulations of conjugate heat transfer and time-resolved flowfield measurements helped to understand the complex mechanisms acting together to generate the overall cooling effectiveness. The predicted endwall temperature fields show the three-dimensional temperature gradients present in conjugate heat transfer. The flat and contoured endwall flowfield measurements show that film cooling jets and the passage vortex interact to generate the secondary flowfield impacting endwall heat transfer. Several recommendations for mitigating increased heat transfer and optimizing the cooling performance for gas turbine endwalls are given.

Book excerpt: An experimental study was made to obtain quantitative information on heat transfer, flow, and pressure distribution in a branched duct test section that had several significant features of an internal cooling passage of a turbine blade. The objective of this study was to generate a set of experimental data that could be used for validation of computer codes that would be used to model internal cooling. Surface heat transfer coefficients and entrance flow conditions were measured at nominal entrance Reynolds numbers of 45 000, 335 000, and 726 000. Heat transfer data were obtained by using a steady-state technique in which an Inconel heater sheet is attached to the surface and coated with liquid crystals. Visual and quantitative flow-field data from particle image velocimetry measurements for a plane at midchannel height for a Reynolds number of 45 000 were also obtained. The flow was seeded with polystyrene particles and illuminated by a laser light sheet. Pressure distribution measurements were made both on the surface with discrete holes and in the flow field with a total pressure probe. The flow-field measurements yielded flow-field velocities at selected locations. A relatively new method, pressure sensitive paint, was also used to measure surface pressure distribution. The pressure paint data obtained at Reynolds numbers of 335 000 and 726 000 compared well with the more standard method of measuring pressures by using discrete holes.

Book excerpt: Gas turbines play an extremely important role in fulfilling a variety of power needs and are mainly used for power generation and propulsion applications. The performance and efficiency of gas turbine engines are to a large extent dependent on turbine rotor inlet temperatures: typically, the hotter the better. In gas turbines, the combustion temperature and the fuel efficiency are limited by the heat transfer properties of the turbine blades. However, in pushing the limits of hot gas temperatures while preventing the melting of blade components in high-pressure turbines, the use of effective cooling technologies is critical. Increasing the turbine inlet temperature also increases heat transferred to the turbine blade, and it is possible that the operating temperature could reach far above permissible metal temperature. In such cases, insufficient cooling of turbine blades results in excessive thermal stress on the blades causing premature blade failure. This may bring hazards to the engine's safe operation. Gas Turbine Blade Cooling, edited by Dr. Chaitanya D. Ghodke, offers 10 handpicked SAE International's technical papers, which identify key aspects of turbine blade cooling and help readers understand how this process can improve the performance of turbine hardware.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local film cooling effectiveness on a gas turbine blade with a row of discrete cooling jets was measured using a mass transfer technique. Emphasis is placed on phenomena near the end wall of the blade. This region contains a horseshoe vortex system modified by a passage vortex. On the concave (pressure) surface the film cooling performance is not greatly altered by the presence of the end wall. On the convex surface of the blade the film cooling is essentially absent in a triangular region extending from near the region of peak curvature on the blade to its trailing edge. This unprotected region closely corresponds to location of the passage vortex as indicated by flow visualization. The passage vortex sweeps away the injected coolant flow from the surface. Upstream of the unprotected area the injected flow is skewed toward the middle span of the blade. End wall influence extends about one-half cord length up from the end wall in the present experiments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inlet temperature of modern gas turbine engines has been increased to achieve higher thermal efficiency and increased output. The blade edge regions, including the blade tip, the leading edge, and the platform, are exposed to the most extreme heat loads, and therefore, must be adequately cooled to maintain safety. For the blade tip, there is tip leakage flow due to the pressure gradient across the tip. This leakage flow not only reduces the blade aerodynamic performance, but also yields a high heat load due to the thin boundary layer and high speed. Various tip configurations, such as plane tip, double side squealer tip, and single suction side squealer tip, have been studied to find which one is the best configuration to reduce the tip leakage flow and the heat load. In addition to the flow and heat transfer on the blade tip, film cooling with various arrangements, including camber line, upstream, and two row configurations, have been studied. Besides these cases of low inlet/outlet pressure ratio, low temperature, non-rotating, the high inlet/outlet pressure ratio, high temperature, and rotating cases have been investigated, since they are closer to real turbine working conditions. The leading edge of the rotor blade experiences high heat transfer because of the stagnation flow. Film cooling on the rotor leading edge in a 11/2 turbine stage has been numerically studied for the designand off-design conditions. Simulations find that the increasing rotating speed shifts the stagnation line from the pressure side, to the leading edge and the suction side, while film cooling protection moves in the reverse direction with decreasing cooling effectiveness. Film cooling brings a high unsteady intensity of the heat transfer coefficient, especially on the suction side. The unsteady intensity of film cooling effectiveness is higher than that of the heat transfer coefficient. The film cooling on the rotor platform has gained significant attention due to the usage of low-aspect ratio and low-solidity turbine designs. Film cooling and its heat transfer are strongly influenced by the secondary flow of the end-wall and the stator-rotor interaction. Numerical predictions have been performed for the film cooling on the rotating platform of a whole turbine stage. The design conditions yield a high cooling effectiveness and decrease the cooling effectiveness unsteady intensity, while the high rpm condition dramatically reduces the film cooling effectiveness. High purge flow rates provide a better cooling protection. In addition, the impact of the turbine work process on film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient has been investigated. The overall cooling effectiveness shows a higher value than the adiabatic effectiveness does.
