Book Synopsis Analogous Uses of Language, Eucharistic Identity, and the 'baptist' Vision by : Aaron James

This book was released on 2014-04-07 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers a 'baptist' account of the identity of the church, Jesus' body, and the communion elements in the Lord's Supper. It does so in conversation with Thomas Aquinas, Balthasar Hubmaier, and James Wm. McClendon, Jr. in the context of contemporary Baptist engagements with ecumenical Christianity and of contemporary philosophy of language. In a very creative and imaginative way it sets the stage for an account of the identity of Jesus' body, the bread and wine, and the church, that makes a constructive contribution to ecumenical Christianity

Book Synopsis Poetic Revelations by : Mark S. Burrows
Download or read book Poetic Revelations written by Mark S. Burrows and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-08-12 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the much debated relation of language and bodily experience (i.e. the 'flesh'), considering in particular how poetry functions as revelatory discourse and thus relates to the formal horizon of theological inquiry. The central thematic focus is around a 'phenomenology of the flesh' as that which connects us with the world, being the site of perception and feeling, joy and suffering, and of life itself in all its vulnerability. The voices represented in this collection reflect interdisciplinary methods of interpretation and broadly ecumenical sensibilities, focusing attention on such matters as the revelatory nature of language in general and poetic language in particular, the function of poetry in society, the question of Incarnation and its relation to language and the poetic arts, the kenosis of the Word, and human embodiment in relation to the word 'enfleshed' in poetry.

Book Synopsis The Word Made Flesh by : Ian A. McFarland
Download or read book The Word Made Flesh written by Ian A. McFarland and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most theologians believe that in the human life of Jesus of Nazareth, we encounter God. Yet how the divine and human come together in the life of Jesus still remains a question needing exploring. The Council of Chalcedon sought to answer the question by speaking of one and the same Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, the same perfect in divinity and also perfect in humanity, the same truly God and truly a human being. But ever since Chalcedon, the theological conversation on Christology has implicitly put Christs divinity and humanity in competition. While ancient (and not-so-ancient) Christologies from above focus on Christs divinity at the expense of his humanity, modern Christologies from below subsume his divinity into his humanity. What is needed, says Ian A. McFarland, is a Chalcedonianism without reserve, which not only affirms the humanity and divinity of Christ but also treats them as equal in theological significance. To do so, he draws on the ancient christological language that points to Christs nature, on the one hand, and his hypostasis, or personhood, on the other. And with this, McFarland begins one of the most creative and groundbreaking theological explorations into the mystery of the incarnation undertaken in recent memory.

Download or read book Fluid Flesh written by Barbara Baert and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we relate the body we have and the bodies we see to the mind, or to the soul? Fluid Flesh addresses the relationship between the body, religion, and the visual arts, which is one of both love and tension. Are we able (and allowed) to think of the divine in a corporeal way? Isn't artistic expression, which originated from both the human mind and body, intrinsically a bodily matter?Featuring an introduction from James Elkins, Fluid Flesh covers an array of topics including the visual as a spiritual medium today; iconophilia and iconoclasm in the past and present; the human body, religion and contemporary lifestyles; and premodern and postmodern perspectives on anatomy and the visual arts. Several authors address the presentation of the human form in Christian art and ask whether the body may be present in religious art even without figuration. The authors highlight the intertwined and powerful roles of both the image and the body within a contemporary culture that has seemingly devalued language (in favor of the image) and has renewed a "sinful" conception of the body as in constant need of improvement.
