Book excerpt: This companion workbook consists of project instructions and card stock worksheets in a 3-hole binder for convenient storage. Using these resources, students can store sewn sample garment details and record design information for design projects. The instructions for each project list the supplies and tasks needed to prepare the samples, plus clear cross references to sewing techniques in the textbook, Professional Sewing Techniques for Designers, 2nd Edition, and the supplementary half-scales patterns available to complete projects. Sample and Sewing worksheets are made of card stock for durable sample mounting and include space to attach sample and label sewing techniques, fabric type, fiber content, lining type, interfacing type, stitching order, stitch length, and notes on where to use the stitching technique on a garment and stitching mistakes. As students use the workbook to practice the sewing techniques, it becomes an ongoing resource and part of the design student's fashion library.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the Proceedings of the Third International EXAFS Conference, hosted by Stanford University and the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory on July 16-20, 1984. The meeting, co-chaired by Professors Arthur Bienenstock and Keith Hodgson, was attended by over 200 scientists representing a wide range of scientific disciplines. The format of the meeting consisted of 51 invited presenta tions and four days of poster sessions. This Proceedings is a compilation of 139 contributions from both invited speakers and authors of contributed posters. The last ten years has seen the rapid maturation of x-ray absorption spectrosco pyas a scientific discipline. The vitality of the field is reflected in the diver sity of applications found in the Proceedings. Recent work continues to probe the limits of x-ray spectroscopy, with proven techniques being extended to, for examp le, very low or high energy studies, to very dilute systems, and to studies of surface structure. In fact, the title of the conference does not at all reflect the breadth of the science discussed at this meeting. The number of fields in which x ray absorption spectroscopy is finding applications has increased dramatically even in the two years since the previous International Conference held in Frascati*. The prospects for continued growth and innovation will be even further enhanced if a new generation 6 GeV storage ring is constructed in the next five years.

Also included are survey articles on some important areas of active research. This volume is aimed at researchers in discrete and convex geometry and researchers who work with abstract polytopes or string C C-groups. It is also aimed at early career mathematicians, including graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, to give them a glimpse of the variety and beauty of these research areas. Topics covered in this volume include: the combinatorics, geometry, and symmetries of convex polytopes; tilings; discrete point sets; the combinatorics of Eulerian posets and interval posets; symmetries of surfaces and maps on surfaces; self-dual polytopes; string C C-groups; hypertopes; and graph coloring.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid growth of neural network research has led to a major reappraisal of many fundamental assumptions in cognitive and perceptual psychology. This text—aimed at the advanced undergraduate and beginning postgraduate student—is an in-depth guide to those aspects of neural network research that are of direct relevance to human information processing. Examples of new connectionist models of learning, vision, language and thought are described in detail. Both neurological and psychological considerations are used in assessing its theoretical contributions. The status of the basic predicates like exclusive-OR is examined, the limitations of perceptrons are explained and properties of multi-layer networks are described in terms of many examples of psychological processes. The history of neural networks is discussed from a psychological perspective which examines why certain issues have become important. The book ends with a general critique of the new connectionist approach. It is clear that new connectionism work provides a distinctive framework for thinking about central questions in cognition and perception. This new textbook provides a clear and useful introduction to its theories and applications.
