Well, one thing is for sure, he'll have to be creative. Like, if you want to keep your heart from breaking, just make sure it's well padded and protected by tying a pillow around your chest. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In modern communication, figurative forms of expressions like idioms, similes, metaphors, personifications and hyperboles are so crucial, for they help make ideas sound more real and feelings feel more actual. They are so revealing and work like stories told through dramatic images. For instance, if someone describes your piece of work as a dog's dinner, they have not only transported your mind to a dramatic scene elsewhere, they have also delivered a clear message amplified by the image described in the comparison. The use of figurative expressions is quite strong among native and near-native English speakers due mainly to the high degree of creativity with which they use the language. According to one research, an average native speaker uses up to four idioms per minute. Thus, to those in the business of communication such as journalists, politicians, preachers, lawyers, public speakers, tour operators, teachers and even students, proficiency in English figurative expressions is a powerful asset of debate and public speaking. Also, apart from being the key for unlocking the language mindset of native speakers, figurative expressions are a means that second language students of English need to increase their vocabulary and lexicon capacity, gain fluency and sound more native-like.Getting interested in English figurative expressions but wondering how to wrap your head around them? Well, this book should be your first step towards achieving that goal. But, you should bear in mind that with English figurative expressions numbering many thousands, you really have your work cut out for you. This book is structured in a very basic form for easy use by anyone with an average command of English. Therefore, for effective comprehension, each figurative expression is driven home by the situation example, which acts as a precursor to the sentence example. The sentence example is not necessarily an exact conversion of the situation example in meaning, but rather a guide to help the reader understand the use of the expression being learnt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,7, University of Hannover (Englisches Seminar), language: English, abstract: The paper deals with different types of figurative language and the question of why and how these should be taught in second language teaching. In order to prove that figurative language is essential in communication and therefore needs to receive more attention in schools, I start by analysing and comparing the concepts of metaphors, idioms and proverbs. Many scholars have discussed metaphors and so as to outline the most important aspects, I refer to Lakoff, Johnson, Ortony and Langlotz amongst others. Those aspects will include the differences between novel and conventional metaphors, the different functions that metaphors fulfil and the phenomenon of mixed metaphors. When discussing idioms I focus on their relationship to metaphorical language, the aspect of frozenness and their functions as well as other topics. Here, scholars like Swinney, Skandara and Götz are quoted and their propositions towards idiomatic language are analysed. To end the first part of the paper I discuss the relationship of proverbs to metaphors and idioms and base this part on Norrick in order to focus on didactic content and the issue of distinguishing between a proverb's literal and figurative meaning. After having given the survey of those concepts, I turn to the part of explaining why it is so important to teach figurative language and I do that by drawing on Ortony's theses of compactness, inexpressibility and vividness. Furthermore, Katz's theory of metaphor as politeness is examined and also Liu's view on idioms as containing cultural references. To end this theoretical paper with an idea of how to use the information practically, the last section deals with the question of how figurative language is best taught. The methods presented are based on a preceding part of background information on how the comprehension process of figurative language works and what the prerequisites are for being able to learn that part of a foreign language. This last part of the paper is mainly based on Ortony, Gentner, Liu and Ur. Eventually, I conclude the paper by summing up the findings and evaluating their relevance for teaching figurative language in second language learning in schools.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As non-native English speakers, we would probably find it difficult to understand even the most common idioms. We should understand the form of each idiomatic expression before we can use it correctly in a sentence, besides knowing its meaning. In this book, the list of 99 common idioms is in alphabetical order under each chapter that shows its category. Each idiom comes with its meaning and its form (verb, noun, adjective, adverb, or respective phrase) to ease understanding on how to use it as part of a complete sentence. This book attempts to provide an analogy to help us remember the meaning accordingly. Each comic strip illustrates an example for each idiom in terms of how we can use it in spoken English. It also attempts to reflect directly its figurative or literal meaning; or even both literal and figurative meanings in some cartoon illustrations. Hence, this book aims to make readers fall in love with idioms when learning them in easy and fun way through cartoon illustrations. Dr Shahida Sulaiman together with cartoonist ASAK and Dr Zarina Mustafa who specialises in English field, form a great team to make this book worthwhile to all readers.
