Women fight with men and with other women—often with “the other woman.” Victoria Burbank’s depiction of these women offers a powerful new perspective that can be applied to domestic violence in Western settings. Noting that Aboriginal women not only talk without shame about their angry emotions but also express them in acts of aggression and defense, Burbank emphasizes the positive social and cultural implications of women’s refusal to be victims. Book excerpt: These six stories are about women fighting in underground fight venues and are based on knowledge of real fights between women and the conditions and circumstances under which these fights actually occur. Tens of thousands of underground fights occur around the world every year. Simply put, there are three basic fight venues: above ground, underground and below ground. This description is not going to be a guide on these venues, only to make the reader aware of them. Above ground fights - boxing and MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) - have strict rules and safety considerations that are determined by and sanctioned by their governing organizations. Underground fights have fewer rules and in most cases the rules of a fight will be specific to that local venue. There are no sanctioning bodies. Wobbly and dizzy fighters can go on. There are many cases where a fighter who has been knocked out has been revived with smelling salts or ice water and gone on to knock out his or her opponent. Unlike gyms and small and large arenas that host above ground fights, underground combat takes place in many types of settings, such as in people's basements or the back of warehouses on mats designating the fight area. They have been in the back rooms of bars or in the basements. Basically, anywhere a fight area can be roped or marked off can serve as a venue for underground combat. Below ground fights do not follow any specific rules and are allowed to pursue any and all means at the disposal of the fighters. For example, if the fighters agree on using chain wrapped fists, the fight will go on using this weapon. Knock downs and knockouts do not necessarily end the fight. A fighter can be knocked out for a significant period of time, be revived and end up knocked out again and again. The six stories in this book take place in underground venues, but as with any such setting that is out of the mainstream, there is a blurring of the lines with the rules of a specific fight applying to only that fight. The ten count rule is often waived for longer counts or no count at all. An incapacitated fighter is forced to continue unless rendered completely incapable of fighting any further by being knocked unconscious to the point she cannot be easily revived. I say "she" because these stories cover only women's fights. These are not mixed fights where a man and a woman fight each other. This heinous gladiator type mentality relegates to below ground events and are rarely if ever the purview of underground fights and never with above ground settings. In these stories, two of the six events are grudge matches and one girl rendering another unconscious does not end the fight. The downed girl is revived to fight on as is the case with countless underground battles. None of the stories involve weapons of any kind as I consider them forbidden. More often than not the word "combat" more aptly applies than does boxing, because it is usually a fight to the finish. There is no winning by points and no TKOs. Despite the brutality, the winning woman often has an erotic experience seeing the loser knocked unconscious. Many women report feeling highly aroused to the point of having their clitoris swell. I won't submit further, because I do not want to ruin the stories. Just be aware they do reflect actual conditions in many underground fight venues. I could say underground/below ground because in many cases the two are combined in practice. Women often fight topless or even naked and just as often use bare or only taped fists. There is a brutality in underground combat venues that far surpasses that of above ground fights and hopefully these stories will pass beyond the level of mere entertainment to bringing an awareness of these fights to the reader. What is done with the information is up to the reader.

However, the progressive female identities of these narratives cannot always resist the persistent and problematic framing of male-female relationships as a battle of the sexes or other source of antagonism. Combining cultural analysis with close readings of key popular American film and television texts since the 1980s, this study argues that certain fighting female themes question regressive conventions in male-female relationships. Those themes reveal potentially progressive ideologies regarding female agency in mass culture that reassure audiences of the desirability of empowered women while also imagining egalitarian intimacies that further empower women. Overall, the fighting female narratives addressed here afford contradictory viewing pleasures that reveal both new expectations for and remaining anxieties about the "strong, independent woman" ideal that emerged in American popular culture post-feminism.
