Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author draws on her father's account of the war and her extensive interviews with other veterans of the 92nd Division to describe the experiences of a naive southern white officer and his segregated unit on an intimate level. During the war, the protocol that required the assignment of southern white officers to command black units, both in Europe and in the Pacific theater, was often problematic, but Johnston seemed more successful than most, earning the trust and respect of his men at the same time that he learned to trust and respect them. Gene Johnston and the African American soldiers were transformed by the war and upon their return helped transform the nation. The 92nd Division of the Fifth Army was the only African American infantry division to see combat in Europe during 1944 and 1945, suffering more than 3,200 casualties. Members of this unit, known as Buffalo Soldiers, endured racial violence on the home front and experienced racism abroad. Engaged in combat for nine months, they were under the command of southern white infantry officers like their captain, Eugene E. Johnston.

Book excerpt: The author's relations with his father, a veteran of World War II, were terrible. The soldier came back from the war to a young son he'd barely met and proceeded to bully and browbeat him--for his own good. In the course of puzzling out almost fifty years of intermittent conflict, the author came to understand that their problems were not simply personal, they were generational--and widely shared. And so to write this book, which tells the secret history of World War II and its echoes down the generations, he has uncovered nine other dramatic and telling father-son tales.

Book excerpt: This book describes the unholy war perpetrated by the myriad state agencies, perhaps in some cases unwittingly, against loving fathers remaining in their children's lives post-divorce or separation. The author has had 5 Ombudsman Investigations to his credit, 3 were Parliamentary, his credentials are exemplary. He has never been cautioned, charged or arrested, yet he and his children were subjected to the most appalling gender discrimination imaginable by multiple state agencies operating in secrecy. This book is a 'how to' survive, and most importantly, protect vulnerable children and parents by exposing this institutional malpractice.

Book excerpt: This story depicts a woman and two children whose husband and father is fighting in combat. The son, who is a fifth grader in elementary school, finds it very hard to accept the fact that his dad is away from home and fighting in a war. He is very upset. The absence of his father has affected his schooling and his relationship with his mother, his little sister, and his peers. His teacher observes the sudden change in both his behavior and his academics and summons his mother to a conference. The teacher and the administration were shocked to find out that the boy's father was fighting in combat. A survey of the student body at the school disclosed the fact that more than fifty students had parents or close relatives fighting in combat. The outcome of the conference caused the creation of a student support team. The students were able to meet twice a week, sharing their feelings about the absence of their family members who are fighting in the war. The fifth grader soon realizes how noble his dad is and why he went to war. He writes to his dad and tells him that he is proud of him and that he should be careful. He also made it known to his dad that he, too, wants to be a soldier when he grows up. This is a thrilling story dedicated to children all over the world, whose parents or close relatives are fighting in combat, or protecting people who are living in war-torn countries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this astonishing story that “reads like a thriller and is so, so timely” (BuzzFeed) Ariana Neumann dives into the secrets of her father’s past: “Like Anne Frank’s diary, it offers a story that needs to be told and heard” (Booklist, starred review). In 1941, the first Neumann family member was taken by the Nazis, arrested in German-occupied Czechoslovakia for bathing in a stretch of river forbidden to Jews. He was transported to Auschwitz. Eighteen days later his prisoner number was entered into the morgue book. Of thirty-four Neumann family members, twenty-five were murdered by the Nazis. One of the survivors was Hans Neumann, who, to escape the German death net, traveled to Berlin and hid in plain sight under the Gestapo’s eyes. What Hans experienced was so unspeakable that, when he built an industrial empire in Venezuela, he couldn’t bring himself to talk about it. All his daughter Ariana knew was that something terrible had happened. When Hans died, he left Ariana a small box filled with letters, diary entries, and other memorabilia. Ten years later Ariana finally summoned the courage to have the letters translated, and she began reading. What she discovered launched her on a worldwide search that would deliver indelible portraits of a family loving, finding meaning, and trying to survive amid the worst that can be imagined. A “beautifully told story of personal discovery” (John le Carré), When Time Stopped is an unputdownable detective story and an epic family memoir, spanning nearly ninety years and crossing oceans. Neumann brings each relative to vivid life, and this “gripping, expertly researched narrative will inspire those looking to uncover their own family histories” (Publishers Weekly).

Book excerpt: In this moving and compelling memoir about parent and child, father and daughter, Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Lucinda Franks discovers that the remote, nearly impassive man she grew up with had in fact been a daring spy behind enemy lines in World War II. Sworn to secrecy, he began revealing details of his wartime activities only in the last years of his life as he became afflicted with Alzheimer's. His exploits revealed a man of remarkable bravado -- posing as a Nazi guard, slipping behind enemy lines to blow up ammunition dumps, and being flown to one of the first concentration camps liberated by the Allies to report on the atrocities found there. My Father's Secret War is an intimate account of Franks coming to know her own father after years of estrangement. Looking back at letters he had written her mother in the early days of WWII, Franks glimpses a loving man full of warmth. But after the grimmest assignments of the war his tone shifts, settling into an all-too-familiar distance. Franks learns about him -- beyond the alcoholism and adultery -- and comes to know the man he once was. Her story is haunting, and beautifully told, even as the tragedy becomes clear: Franks finally comes to know her father, but only as he is slipping further into his illness. Lucinda Franks understands her father as the disease claims him. My Father's Secret War is a triumph of love over secrets, and a tribute to the power of the connection of family.
