Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fifty Years in the Making of Australian History, Vol. 1 of 2 In a work of this kind it has not been found pos sible, and it has not been desired, to suppress my personality. But my wish has been that my public actions should be placed in the full light of day, and left naked and unscreened to public criticism. What ever my work may amount to, it cannot be made more by words from me or from too tolerant friends, and it cannot be made less by the comments of adversaries. It must stand or be swept away according to the nature of its substance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Western Australian Year-Book for 1900-01, Vol. 1 of 2 For various reasons it has lately been found impossible to publish this book annually. The diversity of the subjects included within its scope, and the consequent multiplicity of the sources from which the requisite information has to be drawn, added to the difficulty evidently experienced by the various Government Departments, whose assistance has necessarily to be obtained, in giving immediate attention to the collection and compilation of the matter asked of them, has rendered it, I regret to say, necessary to publish it as a retrospective survey of the two years immediately preceding that of its issue. In this twelfth edition will be found, therefore, in addition to the chapters of general reference, a report of the progress made by the State of Western Australia during the years 1900 and 1901. Comparative statistical figures being, at the same time, in almost every instance, given for the whole decade 1892-1901. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of Australasia: A Brief History of the Origin and Development of the British Dominions in the South Pacific This book is an effort to give a brief but accurate account of the winning and making of Australasia. It may seem that a disproportionate amount of space has been given to the earlier history of Australia. For this there are several reasons. A good deal of new material bearing on the early periods of settlement and of the events that preceded settlement has only recently been made available. The fact that the French took formal possession of part of Australia, for instance, has appeared in no previous history. Then, apart from the special interest that attaches to the beginnings of development, the early days present very much of historical interest. What may be called the middle period of Australian history is comparatively featureless except to the specialist. It was a time of peaceful progress and development. Except for the story of e ploration and for one or two outstanding events there is not much of it to be said in a general history. In some of the colonies important constitutional questions were raised and dealt with, but in a work of this kind it is impossible to treat of these in detail. With the years 1914 - 1918 the case is different. Australia was then drawn into the main stream of world events, and the years of war were crowded with happenings of great magnitude. An attempt has been made to sketch the main outlines of this period, and to indicate the changes in outlook which they caused. But to attempt to deal in detail with the war efforts of Australia would be outside the scope of this book. To treat the matter fully and in its proper perspective it would be necessary to give some thing like a new history of the war. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of the Australian Commonwealth 1889-1900: A Stage in the Growth of the Empire This is not a historic documentee of the movement towards Australian Federation, - (that should be the work of an Australian University), - nor another study of the constitution, nor a memoir; but the record by an eye-witness of the making of the Commonwealth during the critical period from, 1889 to 1900, which aims at giving to a later generation a more vivid picture of that time, and making intelligible the policy and passions of the contending parties, the personalities of the rival leaders, and the ebb and flow of popular sentiment which was the decisive factor in the great event. It is a story, which is worth the telling, of a time when high ideals inspired men to effort, and may repeat itself sooner than we think in a struggle for the closer Union of the British peoples. If the names of the actors be unfamiliar to English readers, let it be remembered that Galt, George Brown, Tupper, and John A. Macdonald were little known in England twelve years after the formation of the Dominion of Canada; and, that all, who do work for the Empire, have a place in its history, whether they inhabit London, Ottawa, or Sydney.
