Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Ponca City, Oklahoma, Bob Camblin (1928-2010) was an artist, first and foremost. He earned his BFA and MFA degrees from the Kansas City Art Institute. His studies were followed by a Fulbright Fellowship that allowed him a year’s stay in Italy. Returning to the USA, he held teaching positions at the Ringling Museum, the University of Illinois, Detroit Mercy, and the University of Utah before moving to Houston in 1967 to teach at Rice’s new art department. He was active in Houston during the late 1960s through the 1980s, collaborating with Earl Staley and Joe Tate on many projects, including “happenings” on the beach in Galveston. His career led him to creative undertakings all over the world. Throughout his lifetime he constantly experimented with various art media. He remained open to new ideas and new techniques until his death in Louisiana in 2010. Camblin was a central figure in the period of artistic fermentation in Houston that is now beginning to receive increasing critical attention. He chose Rowland to be his historian while still at Rice, and her insights into him are based on many personal letters and conversations. In addition, she is a trained art historian and brings to bear professional expertise about his place in regional and American art. Her work includes a useful timeline of Camblin’s exhibitions and major artworks.

Book Synopsis Harvey Quaytman by : Apsara DiQuinzio
Download or read book Harvey Quaytman written by Apsara DiQuinzio and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harvey Quaytman’s paintings are distinct for their inventive, whimsical exploration of shape, meticulous attention to surface texture, and experimental application of color. While his works display a rigorous commitment to formalism, they are simultaneously invested with rich undertones of sensuality, decorativeness, and humor—expressed, too, in his playful poetic titles, such as A Street Called Straight and Kufikind. Demonstrating the arc of Quaytman’s oeuvre, from his radically curvilinear canvases of the late 1960s and 1970s, to his exploration of serialized geometric abstraction in the 1980s, and finally to his serene cruciform canvases of the 1990s, this retrospective exhibition and accompanying illustrated catalogue is a timely reconsideration of Quaytman’s influential work, placing him and his work more prominently in the trajectory of American modern art. With contributions by Suzanne Hudson and John Yau, as well reflections by R. H. Quaytman, an artist and the daughter of Harvey Quaytman, on her father’s work and life. Published in association with the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA). Exhibition dates: October 17, 2018–January 27, 2019, Berkeley Museum of Art Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA).

Download or read book Hans Hofmann written by Helmut Friedel and published by Hudson Hills. This book was released on 1998 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hans Hofmann (1880-1966) is one of the most important figures of postwar American art, for both his own abstract paintings and his influence as the legendary teacher of generations of artists in Germany, New York, and Provincetown. His presence in New York, a link to Wassily Kandinsky, the Cubists, and Fauves, catalyzed the movement ultimately known as Abstract Expressionism, whose influence still pervades the aesthetic categories and practices of art today. This volume features essays on Hofmann's life and work by Helmut Friedel and Tina Dickey; excerpts from Hofmann's own statements; full documentation of his career (including chronology, selected bibliography, and comprehensive list of solo and group exhibitions); and thirty-two large colorplates of works from 1942 to 1965 by this supreme colorist, his finest paintings from European and American collections. They richly represent his unique painting style, which conveys a deeply personal experience of color that has lost none of its power to fascinate the viewer.
