Book Synopsis How Far the Promised Land? by : Jonathan Rosenberg
Download or read book How Far the Promised Land? written by Jonathan Rosenberg and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Far the Promised Land? explores the relationship between overseas developments and the most important reform movement in modern American history, the struggle for racial justice. Interweaving civil rights history, U.S. foreign relations history, and twentieth-century international history, the book contributes to the emerging effort to reconceptualize the study of America's past by locating it in a global context. In examining the link between international developments and the quest for racial justice, Jonathan Rosenberg argues that civil rights leaders were profoundly interested in the world beyond America and incorporated their understanding of overseas matters into their reform program in order to fortify and legitimize the message they presented to their followers, the nation, and the international community. The book considers how a cosmopolitan group of black and white, male and female race reform leaders purposively deployed World War I and the peace settlement, the decolonization struggles in Africa and Asia, the emergence of communism and fascism, World War II, and the Cold War to help realize their domestic aspirations. Rosenberg sets this complex story against the backdrop of America's growing activism on the world stage, a development that would have significant positive implications for the domestic struggle. Central to the work is the notion that race reform leaders were animated by the idea of "color-conscious internationalism," a distinctive outlook that would affect the trajectory and momentum of the civil rights movement.

Book Synopsis Listen And Learn - Fifteen Years Of Adult Education On The Air by : Frank Ernest Hill
Download or read book Listen And Learn - Fifteen Years Of Adult Education On The Air written by Frank Ernest Hill and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is more reportorial than scholarly. It is the product of an effort to collect and relate to one another the important facts about adult education by radio, past and present. I have had a limited time for this effort. Therefore I have attempted no research (although seeking to take account of that done by others), and have confined myself to reading, observing, interviewing, and listening to broadcasts. In the course of these activities I have spent several months in visiting radio stations in various parts of the country, from New York to Los Angeles, and have heard many hundreds of their programs. I have talked both with station and network officials, and with a large number of engineers, educators, and representatives of educational groups.
Book Synopsis The Culture of the Cold War by : Stephen J. Whitfield
Download or read book The Culture of the Cold War written by Stephen J. Whitfield and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1996-05-19 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Without the Cold War, what's the point of being an American?" As if in answer to this poignant question from John Updike's Rabbit at Rest, Stephen Whitfield examines the impact of the Cold War—and its dramatic ending—on American culture in an updated version of his highly acclaimed study. In a new epilogue to this second edition, he extends his analysis from the McCarthyism of the 1950s, including its effects on the American and European intelligensia, to the civil rights movement of the 1960s and beyond. Whitfield treats his subject matter with the eye of a historian, reminding the reader that the Cold War is now a thing of the past. His treatment underscores the importance of the Cold War to our national identity and forces the reader to ask, Where do we go from here? The question is especially crucial for the Cold War historian, Whitfield argues. His new epilogue is partly a guide for new historians to tackle the complexities of Cold War studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Difficult as it is for some to imagine what people relied on for home entertainment in the evening before television--it was that equally big medium, radio. Its programs were the precursors to the popular television sitcoms and dramas of today. This work provides two main kinds of information: month-by-month prime time (7pm to 11pm) schedules from January 1929 through July 1961, for all national broadcasting networks, and a detailed listing of all network programming moves (from July 1926 until August 1967), including series premieres, cancellations, and time slot moves, plus a yearly recap of key programming moves. Only regularly scheduled series are included. Single event or special programming is not included. The book is divided into seven chapters, one for each night of the week; each chapter consists of individual month-by-month prime time schedules for each network followed by a detailed chronological listing of each of that network's series and programming moves.

Book Synopsis Democracies in America by : D. Berton Emerson
Download or read book Democracies in America written by D. Berton Emerson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-04 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ask someone their thoughts about "democracy" and you'll get many different responses. Some may presume it a thing once established yet now under threat. Others may believe that democracy has always been compromised by the empowered few. In the contemporary United States, marked by constituencies across the political spectrum believing that their voices have gone unheard, "democracy" gets wielded in so many divergent directions as to be rendered nearly incoherent. Democracies in America reminds us that this reality is nothing new. Focusing on the various meanings of "democracy" that circulated in the long nineteenth century, the book collects twenty-five essays, each taking up a keyword in the language we use to talk about democracy. Penned by a group of diverse intellectuals, the entries tackle terms both commonplace (citizenship and representation) and paradigm-stretching (disgust and sham). The essays thus consider the relationship between "America" and "democracy" from multiple disciplinary angles and from different moments in a major historical period-amidst the vitality of the revolutionary epoch, in the contentious lead-up to the Civil War, and through the triumphs and failures of Reconstruction and the early reforms of the Progressive Era-while making both forward and backward glances in time. The book frames its keywords around a series of enduring democratic dilemmas and questions, and provides extensive resources for further study. Ultimately the volume cultivates, for students and teachers in classrooms, as well as citizens in libraries and cafés, a language to deliberate about the possibilities and problems of democracy in America.
