Download or read book Oddball Iowa written by Jerome Pohlen and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2005-04-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This zany travel guide presents a more peculiar state than the Iowa Tourism Office might like out-of-towners to imagine. Leaving out the traditional scenic trips to the Mississippi River bluffs and the Amana Colonies, this guide will take the adventurous traveler to the future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk, the home of the "Lonely Goat Herder" marionettes from The Sound of Music, and the world's largest Cheeto. To enhance the experience of this unusual side of Iowa, the guide includes facts about numerous events in Iowa's history, such as Ozzy Osbourne's infamous bat-biting incident and Jesse James's first moving-train robbery. Iowa is depicted as the birthplace of the Roto-Rooter, the Delicious apple, the electronic computer, the reinforced concrete bridge, and the Eskimo pie. The accompanying photographs and maps will direct travelers to other fun vacation spots and attractions, including the butter sculptures at the Iowa State Fair, the annual National Skillet Throw, the Hobo Convention and Museum, the Ice Cream Capital of the World, and the National Balloon Museum.

Book Synopsis Locating Migrating Media by : Greg Elmer
Download or read book Locating Migrating Media written by Greg Elmer and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012-07-10 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Locating Migrating Media details the extent to which media productions, both televisual and cinematic, have sought out new and cheaper shot locations, creative staff, and financing around the world. The book contributes to debates about media globalization, focusing on the local impact of new sites of media production. The book's chapters also question the role that film and television industries and local and regional governments play in broader economic develop and tax incentive schemes. While metaphors of transportation, mobility, fluidity and change continue to serve as key concepts and frames for understanding contemporary media industries, products and processes, the essays in this book look to local spaces, neighborhoods, cultural workers and stories to ground the global_that is, to interrogate the effect of media globalization before, during and after film and television shooting and onsite production. By locating migrating media, these chapters seek to determine the political, economic and cultural conditions that produce contemporary forms of televisual and cinematic storytelling, and how these processes affect the inhabitants, the 'look' and the very geopolitical future of local communities, neighborhoods, cities and regions. The focus on relocated screen production highlights the act of film- and television-making, both aesthetically and economically. To locate migrating media is therefore to determine the political and cultural economies of globalized sets and stages, be they in new studios or on city streets or, perhaps most importantly, in our imaginations.

The book is aimed at those who use wheelchairs, walkers or just have mobility issues. Organized geographically, the book is divided into 22 chapters, with each chapter detailing a loop driving route that can be completed in approximately 2-3 weeks. The routes are spaced throughout the US, with each route having a theme or a commonality. Each route begins in a gateway city with a major airport, so the trips can also be completed as fly-drive packages. And of course they can always be broken up into shorter trips, or even day excursions. Flexibility is the key with this book, with plenty of opportunity to personalize each route to meet individual tastes, time frames and budgets. Candy includes details about accessible lodging, sites, trails, attractions and restaurants. She also gives readers a real flavor of the drives, with off-the-beaten-path finds, unique roadside attractions and rural driving routes also included. After all, accessibility is in the eye of the beholder; and what may be accessible to one person can be filled with obstacles to someone else.

Download or read book Movie Roadshows written by Kim R. Holston and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines a film distribution system paralleling the rise of early features and persisting until 1972, when Man of La Mancha was the final roadshow to require reserved seating. Synonymous with Hollywood's star-studded premieres, roadshows were longer and cost more than regular features, making the experience similar to attending the legitimate theater. Roadshows, often epic in subject matter, played selected (usually only one) theaters in major urban centers until demand decreased. De rigueur by the 1960s were musical overtures, intermissions, entre'acte and exit music and souvenir programs for sale in the lobby. Throughout the text are recollections by people who attended roadshows, including actor John Kerr and actresses Barbara Eden and Ingrid Pitt. The focus is on roadshows released in the United States but an appendix identifies international roadshows and films forecast but not released as roadshows. Included are plots, contemporary critical reaction, premiere dates, production background, and methods of promotion--i.e., the ballyhoo.
