Book excerpt: Winner of the 2020 Blue Lynx Prize for Poetry In The Present State of the Garden, both childhood and the natural world are elegized as the speaker works through layers of loss: the dissolution of a marriage and a world on the brink of ecological collapse. She attempts to patch together some kind of new Eden in these aftermaths and to make a home and family from the remnants?memories from girlhood, a stray aunt and a niece, and what?s left of her small, once lush garden after the punishing storms of summer. The Present State of the Garden is a clear-eyed, open-hearted poetic memoir.
Download or read book Underwater written by Rebecca Elliott and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communities around the United States face the threat of being underwater. This is not only a matter of rising waters reaching the doorstep. It is also the threat of being financially underwater, owning assets worth less than the money borrowed to obtain them. Many areas around the country may become economically uninhabitable before they become physically unlivable. In Underwater, Rebecca Elliott explores how families, communities, and governments confront problems of loss as the climate changes. She offers the first in-depth account of the politics and social effects of the U.S. National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), which provides flood insurance protection for virtually all homes and small businesses that require it. In doing so, the NFIP turns the risk of flooding into an immediate economic reality, shaping who lives on the waterfront, on what terms, and at what cost. Drawing on archival, interview, ethnographic, and other documentary data, Elliott follows controversies over the NFIP from its establishment in the 1960s to the present, from local backlash over flood maps to Congressional debates over insurance reform. Though flood insurance is often portrayed as a rational solution for managing risk, it has ignited recurring fights over what is fair and valuable, what needs protecting and what should be let go, who deserves assistance and on what terms, and whose expectations of future losses are used to govern the present. An incisive and comprehensive consideration of the fundamental dilemmas of moral economy underlying insurance, Underwater sheds new light on how Americans cope with loss as the water rises.

Book excerpt: A contemporary follow-up to the groundbreaking Power of Maps, this book takes a fresh look at what maps do, whose interests they serve, and how they can be used in surprising, creative, and radical ways. Denis Wood describes how cartography facilitated the rise of the modern state and how maps continue to embody and project the interests of their creators. He demystifies the hidden assumptions of mapmaking and explores the promises and limitations of diverse counter-mapping practices today. Thought-provoking illustrations include U.S. Geological Survey maps; electoral and transportation maps; and numerous examples of critical cartography, participatory GIS, and map art.
Book Synopsis Unity: The Art and Science of Transformational Change by : Erik Phillips-Nania
Download or read book Unity: The Art and Science of Transformational Change written by Erik Phillips-Nania and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-12-26 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unity is about transformational changes on the horizon that could bring about a "Golden Age" of peace and prosperity, an idea that unites the prophecies of ancient civilizations. Beginning with the new vegan healthcare standard recommended by the largest health insurance company, Unity describes the levels of food consciousness and comprehensive healthcare policy reform. Unity then defines the development of higher consciousness and the art, science, and technology of Enlightenment. Next, the application of these contemplative studies is critical to solving the crisis of civilization: for preventing catastrophic superstorms and implementing the idea of "spiritual geoengineering" to bring about environmental harmony. The final chapter is on the application of higher consciousness to political and social revolution for the renewal of democracy, equality, justice, and peace.
