Book excerpt: Rare earth intermetallic compounds provide rich grounds for investigating the properties of both local moment and strongly correlated, hybridized moment systems. These areas have been intensively explored mostly on cubic and tetragonal intermetallic compounds, and very little work existed on materials with lower symmetry. Moreover, a large number of Ce-based heavy fermion compounds have been studied, whereas the analogous Yb-based ones are much rarer. We thus wanted to study local moment metamagnetism and Yb-based heavy fermion physics in hexagonal systems. The RAgGe and RPtln series belonging to the Fe2P family of hexagonal compounds allowed us to perform such studies on both local moment and strongly correlated, hybridized moment systems. The RAgGe and RPtln compounds presented in this work display anisotropic temperature and field dependent magnetization due to the crystalline electric field (CEF) splitting of the Hund's rule ground state multiplet. The TmAgGe and TbPtln members of these series display extreme planar anisotropy, which makes them well suited for a study of the angular dependent metamagnetism. We developed the three co-planar Ising-like systems model, which allowed us to determine the net distribution of the magnetic moments in the two compounds. The YbAgGe and YbPtln compounds have some properties distinct from the rest of their respective series: having low ordering temperatures and enhanced electronic specific heat coefficient [Gamma], they can be classified as stoichiometric, Yb-based heavy fermion compounds, with a magnetic field-induced quantum critical point QCP. In the former compound, a non-Fermi liquid-like NFL regime is apparent at intermediate fields, but such a behavior is more ambiguous in the YbPtln. However, a small Pt-deficiency in flux-grown YbPt0.9ln single crystals seems to stabilize, together with the magnetic field, a non-Fermi liquid-like NFL regime. In summary, TmAgGe and TbPtln are hexagonal compounds revealing complex, and yet intelligible angular dependent metamagnetism; together with the quantum critical physics found in YbAgGe and YbPtln, the RAgGe and RPtln series dramatically confirm the fertile grounds for research that can be found in these hexagonal systems.

Book excerpt: The present work was initially motivated by the desire to continue the study of complex metamagnetism in relation to the crystal structure of various compounds; this study already included tetragonal compounds like HoNi2B2C (Canfield 1997b; Kalatsky 1998) and DyAgSb2 (Myers 1999), in which the rare earths occupy unique tetragonal positions. We intended to find hexagonal systems suited for such a study, with complex metamagnetic properties, and the search for extremely anisotropic hexagonal compounds turned into a rewarding exploration. We identified and grew most of the heavy rare earth members of two isostructural series, RAgGe and RPtIn, both belonging to the hexagonal Fe2P family of materials. In each of these series we found one compound, TmAgGe, and TbPtIn respectively, that was suitable for a simple study of angular dependent metamagnetism: they had three rare earth ions in the unit cell, positioned at a unique crystallographic site with orthorhombic point symmetry. The magnetization of both TmAgGe and TbPtIn was extremely anisotropic, with larger values for the in-plane orientation of the applied field than in the axial direction. Complex metamagnetic transitions existed for field within the ab-plane, and, similar to the case of the tetragonal compounds RNi2B2C and DyAgSb2, they depended on the field orientation within the basal plane. We were thus able to develop a two-dimensional model, the three co-planar Ising-like systems model, which described well the angular dependence of the metamagnetic transitions in the TmAgGe and TbPtIn hexagonal compounds. Having three magnetic moments in the hexagonal unit cell, in orthorhombic point symmetry positions, added to the complexity of the analysis compared to the case of tetragonal compounds having one rare earth atom per unit cell, in tetragonal point symmetry. However, the three co-planar Ising-like systems model yielded complex, but intelligible angular dependencies of the critical fields and locally saturated magnetizations for the various metamagnetic transitions observed experimentally. Having found two systems with different.rare earth ions (Tm and Tb) and different ligands (Ag, Ge and Pt, In) gives us some confidence that this behavior may be generic to the Fe2P-based compounds, and potentially even more widely applicable. Furthermore, we generalized this model to a three non-planar Issing-like systems model, in an attempt to understand the nature of the magnetic order in the non-planar magnetic RPtIn compounds (R = Dy-Tm); even though a more detailed analysis is needed to optimize it, this three-dimensional model could also be developed into a useful tool for characterizing hexagonal compounds with orthorhombic point symmetry of the rare earth site.

However, most research advances are restricted to a reduced number of phases owing to computational and resource constraints. This thesis presents an ab-initio theory to efficiently describe complex magnetic phases and their temperature-dependent properties. The central assumption is that magnetic phases evolve slowly compared with the underlying electronic structure from which they emerge. By describing how the electronic structure adapts to the type and extent of magnetic order, a theory able to describe multi-spin correlations and their effect on the magnetism at finite temperature is obtained. It is shown that multi-spin correlations are behind the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the diverse magnetism in the heavy rare earth elements. Magnetically frustrated Mn-based materials and the effect of strain are also investigated. These studies demonstrate that the performance of solid-state refrigeration can be enhanced by multi-spin effects.

Book excerpt: The magnetization measurements using a Gd5(Si{sub 1.95}Ge{sub 2.05}) single crystal with the magnetic field applied along three crystallographic directions, [001], [010] and [100], were carried out as function of applied field (0-56 kOe) at various temperatures (≈5-320 K). The magnetic-field induced phase transformations at temperature above the zero-field critical temperature, i.e. the paramagnetic (PM) ↔ ferromagnetic (FM) transitions with application or removal of magnetic field, are found to be temperature dependent and hysteretic. The corresponding critical fields increase with increasing temperature. The magnetic field (H)-temperature (T) phase diagrams have been constructed for the Gd5(Si{sub 1.95}Ge{sub 2.05}) single crystal with field along the three directions. A small anisotropy has been observed. The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) has been calculated from the isothermal magnetization data, and the observed anisotropy correlates with H-T phase diagrams. The results are discussed in connection with the magnetic-field induced martensitic-like structural transition observed in the Gd5(Si2Ge2)-type compounds.

Book excerpt: Ground states of strongly-correlated electron systems can be affected profoundly if subjected to high magnetic field. In this thesis, we use torque magnetometry as well as modulation field de Haas-van Alphen measurement to measure the magnetic response of three different systems involving of quantum criticality and phase transitions. We employed torque magnetometry in magnetic fields up to 33 T in dc magnets and 65 T in pulsed magnets to the undedoped high Tc cuprate YBCO at 4 K. We observed diamagnetism in two differently doped crystals up to the highest fields applied. While this diamagnetism may still arise from weak bulk superconductivity, it can also be caused by superconducting fluctuations or a reduction of normal state paramagnetism. We also observed that the differential susceptibility dM/dB is rapidly suppressed for B > 16 T, but saturates at a small positive value at higher field. dM/dB departs from linear behaviour with increasing applied field at a characteristic field Hd, and temperature dependence as well as the magnitude of Hd matches the proposed critical field Hc2 = 24 T from previous transport measurements (Grissonnanche et al., Nat. Comm., 4. 3280 (2014)). Using the modulation field method, we measured quantum oscillations of the newly discovered antiferromagnet URhIn5 . We find that the Fermi surface (FS) consists of four sheets, two nearly spherical sheets and two larger orbits that may originate on one cylindrical FS. Multiple copies of these surfaces are needed to match the experimental value of the specific heat coefficient Îł. Advanced band structure calculations are needed to establish the exact FS topology. We also applied the modulation field method to measure the susceptibility of Sr3Ru2O7 at the quantum critical point of the high field anisotropic phase. We observed that the amplitude of the susceptibility peak at the QCP follows a power law with temperature, and determined the critical exponent to be between 2/3 and 1. We could only resolve one dHvA frequency inside the phase at 1 kT, which exhibited neither mass enhancement nor frequency field dependence. Further studies on better crystals would be needed.

This implies that the magnetic field induced quantum phase transitions in Kondo systems are in favor of the local critical type.

Book excerpt: First order magnetic phase transition (FOMPT) in magnetic materials has been of numerous interests in recent past due to their unique functional properties like colossal magnetoresistance, giant magnetocaloric effect etc. Many of these functional magnetic materials are multicomponent systems whose properties become more interesting under substitutions. Such substitutions are the intrinsic source of frozen disorder which leads to the broadening of the first order transition. In this work role of chemical disorder has been studied in such functional oxides systems. Bulk measurement on these materials shows some anamolous feature at low temperature which were explained in terms of "kinetic arrest" which also responsible for the functionality of those materials. This work also gives an idea about the simultaneous effect of high pressure and magnetic field on such transition. Effect of magnetic field on the dielectric parameter of such functional oxides renders an important breakthrough. Moreover, similar studies been performed with shape memory alloys as an comparison.
