Book excerpt: A Guide to Interpretation and Educational Intervention This book is for practicing school psychologists, clinical and counseling psychologists, and anyone else who uses the new Wechsler Intelligence Scale Fourth Edition (WISC-IV). The WISC-IV has been extensively revised; and because of that, some of its educational implications need to be revisited. This book helps examiners generate hypotheses about individual children's learning patterns. It draws heavily on the author's extensive experience with administering and interpreting the WISC-R, WISC-III, and WISC-IV. The WISC-IV Companion promises to become the number one desk reference interpreting this test. Extensively illustrated with face sheets from the WISC-IV, The WISC-IV Companion provides many examples of educational approaches and strategies that can be used in counseling and classroom settings, plus plenty of resources for further reading. It also arms readers with a comprehensive, eclectic understanding of the WISC-IV. Readers can quickly sift through and make sense of what the WISC-IV has to offer regarding a student's educational and intervention needs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of early literacy has seen significant recent advances in theory, research, and practice. These volumes bring together leading authorities to report on current findings, integrate insights from different disciplinary perspectives, and explore ways to provide children with the strongest possible literacy foundations in the first 6 years of life. The Handbook first addresses broad questions about the nature of emergent literacy, summarizing current knowledge on cognitive pathways, biological underpinnings, and the importance of cultural contexts. Chapters in subsequent sections examine various strands of knowledge and skills that emerge as children become literate, as well as the role played by experiences with peers and families. Particular attention is devoted to the challenges involved in making schools work for all children, including members of linguistic and ethnic minority groups and children living in poverty. Finally, approaches to instruction, assessment, and early intervention are described, and up-to-date research on their effectiveness is presented.

Book excerpt: From its origins in the University of Birmingham’s then Institute of Education in 1948, Educational Review has emerged as a leading international journal for generic educational research. Seventy-five years on, Mapping the Field presents a detailed account of education theory and research, policy, and practice through the lens of key articles published in the journal over this timespan. Volume II opens with Part I, a collection of articles examining teachers’ job (dis/) satisfaction and stress, and the gendered composition of the teaching workforce. Articles in Part II trace a shift in academic focus from schools seen as families/communities, to the parent-school relationship. The concepts of inclusion and equality—and strategies for their fulfilment in education—are interrogated in Part III. The volume concludes with Part IV, in which diverse identities in the education field are represented. Curated and introduced by the editors, the articles included in both volumes of Mapping the Field represent a careful selection from the work of scholars whose ideas have been, and continue to be, influential in the field of education. Overall, this major text covers a wide range of topics and offers original insights into educational policy, provision, processes, and practice from around the world.

Book excerpt: The Measuring Early Learning Quality and Outcomes (MELQO) initiative began in 2014 as part of the global emphasis on early childhood development (ECD). Led by UNESCO, the World Bank, the Center for Universal Education at the Brookings Institution and UNICEF, the initiative aims to promote feasible, accurate and useful measurement of childrenâs development and learning at the start of primary school, and of the quality of their pre-primary learning environments. Items are designed for children between the ages of 4 and 6 years. Following the premise that many existing tools include similar items, the leading organizationsâ core team worked with a consortium of experts, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and multilaterals to build upon current measurement tools to create a common set of items organized into modules for measuring: 1) early childhood development and learning, and 2) the quality of pre-primary learning environments. The MELQO core team and experts also collaborated to outline a process for context-specific adaptation of the measurement modules resulting from lessons learned from field-testing in several countries in 2015 and 2016. The modules are designed to be implemented at scale, with an emphasis on feasibility for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). A key question addressed by MELQO was the balance between a global tool suitable for use everywhere, and local priorities and goals for childrenâs development. [Introduction, ed]
