Book excerpt: According to whether they respond to strategic or tactical needs, fortifications may be classified as strategic fortifications and tactical fortifications and are most frequently constructed, in whole or in part, during times of peace, with all the resources of the technical arts, to strengthen points whose strategic importance in the event of a war is clearly seen. Occasionally, however, the necessity for strategic fortifications arises only at the outbreak, or during the progress, of a war to strengthen points, the strategic value of which could not be foreseen. Their construction, more limited as to time, involves expedients less comprehensive than in the case of works built during times of peace, but still far in excess of those applicable in ordinary field worlds. Strategic fortifications also are called permanent and semi-permanent or provisional, according to the time of their construction and the materials employed. The various existing land fortifications in Europe are examples of permanent fortifications, while the defenses of Washington, DC, in 1861-65, form a good example of provisional fortifications. Both permanent and provisional fortifications are constructed by military engineers, mainly with civilian labor, and will not be further considered in these "Notes." Tactical fortifications are such as are generally constructed by the troops themselves to satisfy passing tactical needs. They are also called "field fortifications." The Army field engineer school prepared this educational handbook for use by student officers, Army School of the Line. It provides a foundation of knowledge on permanent and semi-permanent field fortifications that can be set up on a field of battle. It describes how to set up field fortifications and illustrates the principles behind their use in defensive operations.

This book was released on 2011-10-20 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The US Army and Marine Corps in World War II considered themselves highly mobile, offensive forces. Their mobile-warfare doctrine envisioned field fortifications and obstacles as temporary in nature. As a result, their design was simple and made use of local materials, and they could be constructed comparatively quickly, whilst still providing adequate protection. By the time of the Korean War, only minor changes had been made to field fortification construction and layout, and to small-unit organization, weapons, and tactics. This title addresses field fortifications built by US infantrymen during World War II and in Korea, and covers rifle-platoon positions, trenches, crew-served weapon positions, bunkers, dugouts, shelters, observation posts and anti-tank obstacles.

MILITARY COMMUNICATIONS. 300. Despatch is of the first importance in all military operations; and nothing contributes more to it than the means of opening practicable and easy communications in every direction. 301. Among the various obstacles by which the free movements of an army may be embarrassed, water courses, marshes and swamps, hold the first rank, owing to the difficulty of finding suitable means at hand to pass them, or of transporting those means in the train of an army. 302. For the passage of water courses, bridges must be constructed; the character of the construction depending on the nature of the river, the particular locality selected for the bridge, and the means at hand. 303. Before adopting definitively the particular locality, the officer charged with the construction should endeavor to gain the most accurate information, on every point, which might in any manner bear upon this selection; for which purpose he will cause a reconnaissance to be made, to determine the breadth and depth of the river, and the character of its bed;--the velocity of the current, the seasons of freshets, with their usual extent and effects;-- the character of the banks, their absolute and relative heights, their slope, the approaches to them, the distance between them and the water way, and finally, if they are wooded or otherwise;--the position and size of islands, whether wooded or not; --the extent of fords, their depth of water, and the nature of their bottom;--the form and dimensions of elbows and indentations;--the artificial obstructions, or dams, &c, the possibility of their being destroyed by the enemy, and the practicability of applying them to the purposes of artificial inundations;--the position, extent, and...

The pits are placed about 30 feet from each other, and are connected by means of a trench 2 feet wide, and 3 ft. 3 in. deep. (Figs. 192 and 193.) One man is told off to make the pit, and three to the communication. The amount of earth each man excavates is 65 cubic feet. The first thing each man should do is to sink down to the full depth in the left of his work, so as to obtain cover, and then complete his task to the required dimensions. The rifle-pit and communications should be finished in two hours. Each man requires one pick-axe and one shovel. Loopholes should be formed in the parapets of rifle-pits, parallels, &c., as described in section 97." Section 14.--HASTY...

Book Synopsis German Field Fortifications 1939–45 by : Gordon L. Rottman

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German Army of World War II considered itself an offensive, mobile force. The experiences in the trenches in World War I had done much to shape its concept of field fortification, and its mobile warfare ethos was intended to prevent the previous war's stalemate. This book addresses frontline defensive field fortifications, built by infantrymen using local materials, and includes rifle platoon positions, trenches, crew-served weapon positions, bunkers, dugouts, shelters and more. It also covers anti-tank and anti-personnel obstacles, as well as field camouflage methods and construction methods. The integration of these positions into permanent systems and theatre-specific defences are also discussed.
Download or read book Forts written by The National Archives and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since humans began to live together in settlements they have felt the need to organise some kind of defence against potentially hostile neighbours. Many of the earliest city states were built as walled towns, and during the medieval era, stone castles were built both as symbols of the defenders' strength and as protection against potential attack. The advent of cannon prompted fortifications to become lower, denser and more complex, and the forts of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries could appear like snowflakes in their complexity and beautiful geometry. Without forts, the history of America could have taken a very different course, pirates could have sailed the seas unchecked, and Britain itself could have been successfully invaded. This book explains the history of human fortifications, and is beautifully illustrated using photographs, plans, drawings and maps to explain why they were built, their various functions and their immense historical legacy in laying the foundations of empire.
