Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2023 in the subject Engineering - Aerospace Technology, grade: 3,4, , language: English, abstract: Space electric propulsion is required not only for orbit raising and transfer, position control, and station keeping, but also for spacecraft attitude control, advanced thermal material testing, and end-of-life de-orbiting that is much more fuel efficient than conventional chemical rockets. FEEP thruster is one type of ion propulsion system that provides a low thrust of the order of micro-Newton (μN) to milli-Newton (mN) that is primarily used for precise spacecraft attitude control with extremely high efficiency and small impulse bits based on the exhaust velocity of an ejected ion from a thruster. This thesis report includes a mathematical and 3D CAD model of a FEEP thruster with the overarching goal of investigating and analyzing the thruster’s parametric performance. To accomplish this, a MATLAB program was used to simulate the change in thrust and exhaust velocity over time using various types of liquid metal as a propellant, assuming the fuel mass is equal to the atomic mass of the propellant, the wet mass of the spacecraft is assumed to be 4kg, and the charge of an ion is assumed to be 1.602 × 10−19 while the supplied voltage is held constant at 10 kV. Furthermore, because the porous crown emitter is the heart of the FEEP thruster, its stiffness and topology optimization were investigated. The simulation results show that the thrust value of the FEEP thruster over time ranges from 0.213μN to 211mN during stable ion flow rate and mass expulsion of indium propellant, implying that the result is comparable to realistic FEEP parameters. Furthermore, as expected, increasing the voltage between the emitter and extractor electrodes and decreasing the mass expulsion of the propellant increased the thrust value of the FEEP thruster.

Book excerpt: Within this master's thesis the performance of a field emission ion thruster using Indium as propellent is investigated. The core element of this propulsion system is a crown made of porous tungsten needles, infiltrated with liquid indium. If high voltage is applied to this crown, the field strength is sufficiently high to start ionic field emission at the needle tips. This highly energetic ion beam is then directed in one direction to create thrust of up to 400 $\mu N$. An established analytical method for the emission current, which up to now relied on the assumption of a parabolically shaped needle, was extended by taking the actual field geometry of the emitting needle tips into account. To solve the electric potential for a set of boundary condition points obtained from a 3D scan of the needles, a numeric algorithm was developed that computes an approximate solution of the Laplace equation. This way a significantly improved agreement with experimentally measured current - voltage characteristics could be achieved. Combining the impedance model with empirical data for the mass efficiency as a function of the emitted current, the form factor of the ion beam and the electrical efficiency, allowed to model the performance of a FEEP thruster within the entire operational envelope. This model was used to predict the performance envelope of the newly developed IFM nano thruster with different emitters and to identify the engineering challenges that need to be overcome to improve FEEP systems in the future.*****Within this master's thesis the performance of a field emission ion thruster using Indium as propellent is investigated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout most of the twentieth century, electric propulsion was considered the technology of the future. Now, the future has arrived. This important new book explains the fundamentals of electric propulsion for spacecraft and describes in detail the physics and characteristics of the two major electric thrusters in use today, ion and Hall thrusters. The authors provide an introduction to plasma physics in order to allow readers to understand the models and derivations used in determining electric thruster performance. They then go on to present detailed explanations of: Thruster principles Ion thruster plasma generators and accelerator grids Hollow cathodes Hall thrusters Ion and Hall thruster plumes Flight ion and Hall thrusters Based largely on research and development performed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and complemented with scores of tables, figures, homework problems, and references, Fundamentals of Electric Propulsion: Ion and Hall Thrusters is an indispensable textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students who are preparing to enter the aerospace industry. It also serves as an equally valuable resource for professional engineers already at work in the field.

Concepts, Applications and Markets for Micro/Nanosatellites in a New Information World". Thus, the Symposium addressed the crucial question: are small satellites the saviour of space programmes around the world It did this from the unique perspective of the International Space today? University - the interdisciplinary, international and intercultural perspective. This Symposium brought together a variety of people working on small satellites - engineers, scientists, planners, providers, operators, policy makers and business executives, together with representatives from regulatory bodies, from national and international organizations, and from the finance sector, and also entrepreneurs. Discussion and debate were encouraged, based on the papers presented and those published here.

Book excerpt: Field-emission electric propulsion (FEEP) technology can reach a very high specific impulse and is therefore a competitive candidate for missions that require very high total momentum, delivered over a long mission lifespan. Therefore, it is especially relevant to maximize the time that such thrusters can be tested. Previous life-time testing has often resulted in contamination of the emission sites with Aluminium, which is most likely caused by back-sputtered material from the testing facility. This contamination is not representative for operation in orbit, but for testing purposes, Enpulsion seeks to develop a new vacuum facility that is optimized to reduce the Aluminium backflow by using high voltage electrodes to redirect the ion beam. By deflecting the beam to a location without direct line of sight with the thruster, back-sputtered particles cannot directly flow from the chamber wall to the emitter, and the sputtering contamination can be minimised. In this thesis, the feasibility of such facility will be proven, to be later designed and validated experimentally. The design of the facility will be supported by simulations in COMSOL Multiphysics, using the AC/DC and Charged Particle Tracing modules.*****Field-emission electric propulsion (FEEP) technology can reach a very high specific impulse and is therefore a competitive candidate for missions that require very high total momentum, delivered over a long mission lifespan. Reliability is chief among the challenges limiting the deployment of MEMS technologies in space, as the requirement of zero failure during the mission is quite stringent for this burgeoning field. MEMS and Microstructures in Aerospace Applications provides all the necessary tools to overcome these obstacles and take MEMS from the lab bench to beyond the exosphere. The book begins with an overview of MEMS development and provides several demonstrations of past and current examples of MEMS in space. From this platform, the discussion builds to fabrication technologies; the effect of space environmental factors on MEMS devices; and micro technologies for space systems, instrumentation, communications, thermal control, guidance navigation and control, and propulsion. Subsequent chapters explore factors common to all of the described systems, such as MEMS packaging, handling and contamination control, material selection for specific applications, reliability practices for design and application, and assurance practices. Edited and contributed by an outstanding team of leading experts from industry, academia, and national laboratories, MEMS and Microstructures in Aerospace Applications illuminates the path toward qualifying and integrating MEMS devices and instruments into future space missions and developing innovative satellite systems.

On Earth, radiation exposure is less than 2.5 milliseiverts per year. On their approach to Mars, colonists will face levels 300 times higher than that. Can we use superconducting advanced plasma propulsion technologies to cut the time down to 30 days? Neutron Star Systems has developed an improved magnetoplasmadynamic thruster system that uses rare earth barium copper oxide high temperature superconducting electromagnets to significantly improve plasma propulsion performance while consuming less electricity. This could be the way of the future for spaceflight propulsion. Technically, there are two types of propulsion systems namely chemical and electric depending on the sources of the fuel. Electrostatic thrusters are used for launching small satellites in low earth orbit which are capable to provide thrust for long time intervals. These thrusters consume less fuel compared to chemical propulsion systems. Therefore for the cost reduction interests, space scientists are interested to develop thrusters based on electric propulsion technology. Can SpaceX use Advanced Plasma Propulsion for Starship?
