Book Synopsis The Nature of Intellectual Styles by : Li-fang Zhang
Download or read book The Nature of Intellectual Styles written by Li-fang Zhang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date, panoramic picture of the field of intellectual styles through describing, analyzing, and integrating the major theoretical and research works on the topic. Readers will gain a broad understanding of the field--its nature, origins, historical development, theories, research, and applications, as well as the interrelationships among major theoretical constructs proposed by different theorists in the past few decades. In particular, three major controversial issues in the field are addressed by both empirical findings and literature review: styles as better versus worse or as equal in merit; styles as traits versus styles as states; and styles as different constructs versus styles as similar constructs with different style labels. Educators will find ideas on how to improve their teaching and assessment of student performance. Student development specialists will be interested in the book because intellectual styles, as evidenced by recent studies, play a critical role in many aspects of student development including cognitive, affective, psychosocial, and career development. Psychologists will gain an understanding of an important facet of the field at the interface between cognition and personality. Managers in business will find the book relevant to such issues as effective supervision and staff training and development. The Nature of Intellectual Styles is intended for anyone--particularly researchers and students in the fields of education, psychology, and business management--who is interested in understanding intellectual styles and their effects on daily life.

Book Synopsis Models and Methodologies Appropriate to the Study of Outcomes of Schooling in Ontario's Multicultural Society by : Paul Anisef
Download or read book Models and Methodologies Appropriate to the Study of Outcomes of Schooling in Ontario's Multicultural Society written by Paul Anisef and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report explicates conceptual models of schools outcomes and related research methodologies in order to increase an understanding of the diversity and structure of desired outcomes. The complex interrelationship among models of education, desired outcomes, methods of achieving those outcomes, and methods of studying the results is approached from socio-historical, theoretical and empirical viewpoints. An historical overview of education in Ontario documents the interrelationship between societal change and educational reform as well as the cyclic nature of educational philosophies. Student outcomes are defined through a typology and a discussion of current educational policy goals in light of that typology. Three major sociological models of education--structural functionalism, conflict theory, and the interpretive paradigm--are reviewed with respect to the kinds of outcomes and determinants stressed and characteristic research methodologies. The substantive areas of transition to work, academic achievement, and multiculturalism are examined to further the investigation of the utility of larger models for studying specific outcomes. The definition and measurement of models and outcomes by Canadian researchers in the past is examined through an inventory of Canadian data sets identified in the literature, through the Ontario Educational Research Information System (ONTERIS), through all major Canadian data archives, and through Ontario school boards. The results of a survey of education practitioners include perceptions of desirable outcomes and speak to the needs of future research. Two major conclusions and six specific recommendations are posited. The inventory of data sets and the interview schedule for the study are appended. A reference list is provided. (Author/BZ)
