Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1907, author, poet, essayist, and folk art historian Eliza Calvert Hall (1856–1935) published Aunt Jane of Kentucky, a collection of stories about rural life infused with the spirit and gentle good humor of its elderly narrator, Aunt Jane. The book and several sequels achieved wide popularity, reaching an estimated one million readers in her lifetime, and placed Hall in the front ranks of "local color" fiction writers of her time. Eliza Calvert Hall's life and work unfolded during a time of restlessness and change for American women. Born Eliza "Lida" Calvert in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Hall experienced the upheaval of both the Civil War and family scandal. Forced to help support her mother and four siblings by teaching school, she became a published poet, adopting her grandmother's name, Hall, as her pseudonym. At twenty-nine, she married William A. Obenchain, and in the space of eight years gave birth to four children. As Hall struggled to balance her writing career with the duties of a nineteenth-century wife and mother, suffragist Laura Clay was lobbying for every woman's right to vote. Hall joined the battle, writing fearlessly in support of suffrage and equality. While her passionate essays served as a direct appeal for this cause, her creative writing also carried a feminist spirit, celebrating the strength, humor, love, and art of the common woman. In Eliza Calvert Hal: Kentucky Author and Suffragistl, Lynn E. Niedermeier tells the story of this remarkable Kentuckian for the first time. Hall's challenge was to balance the artist's creative ambitions with the crusader's passion for achieving the goal of political equality for American women. Her successes did not stem from privilege or leisure; although she was an acclaimed writer, Hall was an ordinary woman, a wife and mother of moderate economic means. Through the power of her words, she challenged others to match her courage, independence, intellectual energy, and loyalty to her sex.

Book excerpt: As the event management field expands, there has been an emergence of a distinctive ‘events’ policy field of study and a need for more advanced texts that look at this subject with a multidisciplinary research and theoretical orientation. Events Policy: From Theory to Strategy is the first text to embrace this new direction in the field of events management. Its main aim is to locate the phenomena of events (and festivity) within a theoretical and strategic framework and, in doing so, demonstrate the links between the development of events in policy-making and the theoretical exploration of the role of events as policy. Building on a strong coherent framework, the book explores the conceptual terrain in which events and festivities are located, evaluates the range of theoretical perspectives pertinent to the study of events policy, appraises the socio-economic and socio-cultural implications of event-led policies internationally and draws together the main theoretical and event policy issues for the future. It utilizes a good range of international cases, from Dubai, Singapore, New Orleans and Glasgow, to help demonstrate the relationships between theory and strategy, and includes useful features to help students understand the subject and deepen their knowledge of the events policy terrain. This groundbreaking volume will be essential reading for students, researchers and academics of events and other related disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Christmas Child" in this book isn't Jesus, but rather a boy born on Christmas Day, named "Chris". After his father forgets both Christmas and Chris’ birthday (not surprising as the father is an impoverished, overworked surgeon) He runs away from home and finds himself in a park, where he meets the fairy-queen. She tells him that all children born on the 25th of December have the gift of talking to the fairy-folk. What follows is an account of Chris’ adventures and meetings with the fairy folk and the stories they tell him. Some of the tales Chris hears, are stories of shape-shifting princesses, doomed supernatural lovers and peasants rewarded for kindness or punished for laziness and cruelty. A fairy persuades a knight who loves her to tear a page from a Bible inscribed with his dead mother's handwriting, When he presents her with the page she laughs, or rather cackles, at him and disappears. But what happens to the knight and the fairy? It is common knowledge that fairies always reward anyone who shows a stranger hospitality. Chris is always treated well by the fairies he encounters, though it's implied that this is only because he has special status as a "Christmas Child". He narrowly avoids being kidnapped by fairy women and forced to spend the rest of his life in an underground city. He is released because he coincidentally mentions the day of his birth. All the stories are accurate to original myths and folklore. In all, this is an endearing, if somewhat forgotten, work of fiction, wonderfully illustrated in colour and black-and-white by the late, great Willy Pogany (August 1882 – July 1955) 10% of the profit from the sale of this book are donated to charity. ===================== KEYWORDS/TAGS: Fairies and the Christmas Child, adventure, folklore, fairy tales, myths, legends, childrens stories, fables, Lilian Gask, Willy Pogany, Fairy Ring, Princess, Sea-Green Hair, Rose-Marie, Poupican, Bird, Window, White Stone, Happiness, Seven, Fair Queens, Pirou, Dwarf, Palace, Silver Horn, Little White Feather, Wild, Huntsman, White Princess, Favourite, Fates, Rock the cradle, fancy, wee brown men, dancing Elves, Fairy Princess, toss, hide, curtain, Madame Marguerite, Lord, Argouges, snow-white bird, Elberich, jeer, Otnit, old man, dance, maiden, Lower, window, rope of pearls, tickle, monster, Pepita, Christmas day, birth, Chris, fairy queen, forest,
