A New York Times Notable Book A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice A Boston Globe and LitHub Best Book of the Year When “The Fourth State of Matter,” her now famous piece about a workplace massacre at the University of Iowa was published in The New Yorker, Jo Ann Beard immediately became one of the most influential writers in America, forging a path for a new generation of young authors willing to combine the dexterity of fiction with the rigors of memory and reportage, and in the process extending the range of possibility for the essay form. Now, with Festival Days, Beard brings us the culmination of her groundbreaking work. In these nine pieces, she captures both the small, luminous moments of daily existence and those instants when life and death hang in the balance, ranging from the death of a beloved dog to a relentlessly readable account of a New York artist trapped inside a burning building, as well as two triumphant, celebrated pieces of short fiction. Here is an unforgettable collection destined to be embraced and debated by readers and writers, teachers and students. Anchored by the title piece––a searing journey through India that brings into focus questions of mortality and love—Festival Days presents Beard at the height of her powers, using her flawless prose to reveal all that is tender and timeless beneath the way we live now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a unique style that is both sensory and utopian, Yayoi Kusama’s work possesses a highly personal character, yet one that has connected profoundly with large audiences around the globe. Throughout her career she has been able to break down traditional barriers between work, artist, and spectator. Kusama’s work—which spans paintings, performances, room-size presentations, sculptural installations, literary works, films, fashion, design, and interventions within existing architectural structures—has transcended some of the most important art movements of the second half of the twentieth century, including pop art and minimalism. Conveying extraordinary vitality and passion, her work seems to encompass an autobiographic, even confessional dimension. As stated by Roberta Smith in The New York Times, “These paintings form a great big infinity room of their own, but one in which each part is also an autonomous work of art, its own piece of wobbly, handwrought infinity. You may not want to know these paintings Ms. Kusama has made, but in the moment their vitality is infectious. It is the vitality of an artist who lives to work, whose work keeps her alive.” Yayoi Kusama: Festival of Life documents the artist’s exhibition at David Zwirner’s Chelsea location in New York in late 2017, featuring a selection of paintings from her iconic My Eternal Soul series, new large-scale flower sculptures, a polka-dotted environment, and two Infinity Mirror Rooms. The monograph includes new scholarship on the artist by Jenni Sorkin, as well as a special foldout poster.

In the story, a domestic conflict between two landlords is finally ended with reconciliation by the scarring of three soldiers, revealing the ferocity and cruelty of the feudal forces. "Bao and His Son" depicts the image of Bao as an honest, nice father with a weak character who has great expectations for his son, but he ends up disappointed. The South-Yangze River Water Village serves as the background. This story was made into a 1983 film by Beijing Film Studio. "Mrs. Huawei," published in 1938, depicts the bureaucratic image of a self-contented and obstinate Kuomintang official by the use of exaggeration and satire.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food, Festival and Religion explores how communities in northern Italy find a restorative sense of place through foodways, costuming and other forms of materiality. Festivals examined by the author vary geographically from the northern rural corners of Italy to the fashionable heart of urban Milan. The origins of these lived religious events range from Christian to vernacular Italian witchcraft and contemporary Paganism, which is rapidly growing in Italy. Francesca Ciancimino Howell demonstrates that during ritualized occasions the sacred is located within the mundane. She argues that communal feasting, pilgrimage, rituals and costumed events can represent forms of lived religious materiality. Building on the work of scholars including Foucault, Grimes and Ingold, Howell offers a theoretical “Scale of Engagement” which further tests the interfaces between and among the materialities of place, food, ritual and festivals and provides a widely-applicable model for analyzing grassroots events and community initiatives. Through extensive ethnographic research and fieldwork data, this book demonstrates that popular Italian festivals can be ritualized, liminal spaces, contributing greatly to the fields of religious, performance and ritual studies.

This book was released on 2023-11-23 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After three successful research studies and three scientific books, the EU-China International Literary Festival international project team focused on testing and applying the international festival research methodology. Based on previous research studies, reports and scientific books, the authors had sufficient knowledge of the methodological guidelines for conducting demanding multilingual and cross-cultural research. The research and methodological definition of the scientific book is the EU-China literary festival conceived as the interaction of European and Chinese authors with Chinese audiences and the promotion of European culture in Chinese cities. This book focuses on the analysis of the 4th EU-China International Literary Festival organised by the Delegation of the European Union to China. The goal of the Festival is to bring distant cultures closer by virtue of literature as a medium, and the Festival has been held twice a year in China since 2017. The audience could attend Festival events either at the venue (n = 6,914) or online (n = 377,098). The number of online attendees far exceeded the number of visitors who attended live events, which strongly popularised EU-China cooperation, cross-cultural differences, new media monitoring literary events, literature itself and the authors. The research methodology was used to measure the views of three groups of stakeholders in the EU-China International Literary Festival (n = 70), i.e. 1. Festival visitors, 2. European authors (international participants), and 3. Chinese authors (national participants). By analysing the views of the three groups of respondents, the book analyses the measure of both the success of the EU-China International Literary Festival and the level of satisfaction with the Festival. Comparison and identification of similarities and differences among the three groups of respondents is one of the research goals. Based on a large number of media releases and live streamings, the Festival can be seen as a highly successful promotional product where the culture of the European Union was presented to the Chinese visitors. In addition to the research methodology, the scientific book also provides the design of research procedures applied in multilingual research by international research teams. An enviable longitudinal series of data collected from the three groups of stakeholders was created by the fourth measurement of Festival success. The tested international festival research methodology can be used by future researchers of festival phenomena for developing an instrument for gathering the views of festival participants (authors, visitors and organisers) of literary and all other related festivals. The efforts of this research study are ultimately aimed at a systematic increase in the quality of festivals, ensuring continued funding, and laying the groundwork for related festivals funded by the EU Delegation to China.
