Book Synopsis Domains in Ferroic Crystals and Thin Films by : Alexander Tagantsev
Download or read book Domains in Ferroic Crystals and Thin Films written by Alexander Tagantsev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-03-02 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At present, the marketplace for professionals, researchers, and graduate students in solid-state physics and materials science lacks a book that presents a comprehensive discussion of ferroelectrics and related materials in a form that is suitable for experimentalists and engineers. This book proposes to present a wide coverage of domain-related issues concerning these materials. This coverage includes selected theoretical topics (which are covered in the existing literature) in addition to a plethora of experimental data which occupies over half of the book. The book presents experimental findings and theoretical understanding of ferroic (non-magnetic) domains developed during the past 60 years. It addresses the situation by looking specifically at bulk crystals and thin films, with a particular focus on recently-developed microelectronic applications and methods for observations of domains with techniques such as scanning force microscopy, polarized light microscopy, scanning optical microscopy, electron microscopy, and surface decorating techniques. "Domains in Ferroic Crystals and Thin Films" covers a large area of material properties and effects connected with static and dynamic properties of domains, which are extremely relevant to materials referred to as ferroics. In other textbooks on solid state physics, one large group of ferroics is customarily covered: those in which magnetic properties play a dominant role. Numerous books are specifically devoted to magnetic ferroics and cover a wide spectrum of magnetic domain phenomena. In contrast, "Domains in Ferroic Crystals and Thin Films" concentrates on domain-related phenomena in nonmagnetic ferroics. These materials are still inadequately represented in solid state physics textbooks and monographs.

Book Synopsis Multicomponent Oxide Films for Electronics: Volume 574 by : Marilyn Hawley
Download or read book Multicomponent Oxide Films for Electronics: Volume 574 written by Marilyn Hawley and published by . This book was released on 1999-10-06 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exceptional properties of multicomponent oxides, combined with the inability of simpler materials to meet the increasing demands of the electronics industry, have motivated tremendous interest and activity in utilizing multicomponent oxides for electronic applications. For these applications, it is often desirable to integrate complex oxides in thin-film form with other materials. This book focuses on common materials issues involved in the processing and characterization of multicomponent oxides and how these issues relate to device applications. Papers range from theoretical explanations of the magnetic and electronic properties of transition metal oxides, to integration with silicon technology. Noteworthy is the progress being made in the deposition and characterization of these complex materials, as well as their applicability in ferroelectric memories, MOSFETs, optical devices, infrared imaging arrays, etc. Topics include: epitaxial multicomponent oxide film growth; properties, characterization and modeling; properties of multicomponent oxides; and multicomponent oxide devices.

Book Synopsis Liquid Crystals Materials and Devices: Volume 559 by : Timothy J. Bunning
Download or read book Liquid Crystals Materials and Devices: Volume 559 written by Timothy J. Bunning and published by . This book was released on 1999-08-11 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid crystal (LC) materials and devices play a central role in numerous established and emerging technologies. This book focuses on several large areas of research including polymer-dispersed liquid crystal technology and twisted smectic materials and applications, as well as nontraditional LC materials and applications. Various aspects of liquid crystal composite technology are featured. Of note is the work concentrating on the use of holography to imprint information into thin films of these systems. Three different approaches for employing holography with liquid crystal materials are discussed. In the ferroelectric liquid crystal arena, the intricacies of different chiral smectic-C architectures are described using detailed X-ray structural experiments on freestanding films. The differences between a molecule and a phase are explored. A number of nondisplay applications using this class of materials are presented and include topics such as adaptive optics, real-time holography and fiber-to-fiber interconnects. Also discussed are glass-forming liquid crystalline films and their ability to polarize photoluminescent emission, their utility in the fabrication of mid-wavelength infrared polarizers, and their utility in the fabrication of bistable electro-optical elements and broadband reflectors.
