Book excerpt: HIV-related stigma incorporates stigmas associated with the illness as well as stigmas associated with groups that have been linked with HIV including gay and bisexual men, sex workers, and intravenous drug users. HIV-related stigma has led to the isolation of many groups based on their association with HIV/AIDS. It has been suggested that mode of transmission, knowledge of HIV, interaction with HIV positive individuals, and attitudes towards HIV influence perceptions of those infected.

Book excerpt: Black women are most likely to become infected with HIV/AIDS from engaging, in heterosexual relations with Black men, including "Down Low" (DL) Black men. The purpose of this study was to determine Black women's knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to HIV and the 'DL' phenomenon. Fifty-eight Black, UNC Charlotte undergraduate students completed written surveys based on constructs of the Health Belief Model (HBM). The results indicated that these females anticipate engaging in protective health behaviors, and believe that they are susceptible and threatened by the HIV/AIDS virus and 'DL' phenomenon. In addition, HIV knowledge, perceived susceptibility and perceived threat were the only variables of the HBM that predicted preventive health actions. Overall, results support the need for greater understanding of how Black women are personally affected by both HIV and the 'DL' phenomenon.

Currently the spectre of a pandemic of influenza A|H1N1 is raising its head, and heated debates are taking place about the pro’s and con’s of vaccinating young girls against human papilloma virus. For an evidence-based and responsible communication of infectious disease topics to avoid misunderstandings and overreaction of the public, we need solid scientific knowledge and an understanding of all aspects of infectious diseases and their control. The aim of our book is to present the reader with the general picture and the main ideas of the subject. The book introduces the reader to methodological aspects of epidemiology that are specific for infectious diseases and provides insight into the epidemiology of some classes of infectious diseases characterized by their main modes of transmission. This choice of topics bridges the gap between scientific research on the clinical, biological, mathematical, social and economic aspects of infectious diseases and their applications in public health. The book will help the reader to understand the impact of infectious diseases on modern society and the instruments that policy makers have at their disposal to deal with these challenges. It is written for students of the health sciences, both of curative medicine and public health, and for experts that are active in these and related domains, and it may be of interest for the educated layman since the technical level is kept relatively low.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There hasn't been a resource to inform readers about the HIV risk confronting our adolescent population--until now! In Adolescents and AIDS, leading researchers in health, medicine, sociology, and psychology describe the risks to this vulnerable population. Divided into three parts (epidemiology, prevention/risk reduction, and policy), this comprehensive book addresses not only adolescents in general, but includes specific chapters on high-risk populations such as minority, incarcerated and homeless youth. The authors explore the data and theoretical underpinnings necessary for designing and implementing effective risk-reduction and prevention programs by approaching the AIDS epidemic as a social and developmental crisis that adolescents are ill-prepared to address. While proposing appropriate theoretical models for behavior change, the book also evaluates the effectiveness of various intervention strategies ranging from school-based programs to mass-media approaches and offers public policy recommendations for intervening for this population. Health professionals, researchers, policy analysts, clinicians, counselors, and students will find this timely text a valuable resource.
