Book excerpt: In this book we want to explore aspects of coherence in homological algebra, that already appear in the classical situation of abelian groups or abelian categories. Lattices of subobjects are shown to play an important role in the study of homological systems, from simple chain complexes to all the structures that give rise to spectral sequences. A parallel role is played by semigroups of endorelations. These links rest on the fact that many such systems, but not all of them, live in distributive sublattices of the modular lattices of subobjects of the system. The property of distributivity allows one to work with induced morphisms in an automatically consistent way, as we prove in a 'Coherence Theorem for homological algebra'. (On the contrary, a 'non-distributive' homological structure like the bifiltered chain complex can easily lead to inconsistency, if one explores the interaction of its two spectral sequences farther than it is normally done.) The same property of distributivity also permits representations of homological structures by means of sets and lattices of subsets, yielding a precise foundation for the heuristic tool of Zeeman diagrams as universal models of spectral sequences. We thus establish an effective method of working with spectral sequences, called 'crossword chasing', that can often replace the usual complicated algebraic tools and be of much help to readers that want to apply spectral sequences in any field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attention has been studied in cognitive psychology for more than half a century, but until recently it was largely neglected in philosophy. Now, however, attention has been recognized by philosophers of mind as having an important role to play in our theories of consciousness and of cognition. At the same time, several recent developments in psychology have led psychologists to foundational questions about the nature of attention and its implementation in the brain. As a result there has been a convergence of interest in fundamental questions about attention. This volume presents the latest thinking from the philosophers and psychologists who are working at the interface between these two disciplines. Its fourteen chapters contain detailed philosophical and scientific arguments about the nature and mechanisms of attention; the relationship between attention and consciousness; the role of attention in explaining reference, rational thought, and the control of action; the fundamental metaphysical status of attention, and the details of its implementation in the brain. These contributions combine ideas from phenomenology, neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and philosophy of mind to further our understanding of this centrally important mental phenomenon, and to bring to light the foundational questions that any satisfactory theory of attention will need to address.

Book excerpt: In this monograph, the authors develop a methodology that allows one to construct and substantiate optimal and suboptimal algorithms to solve problems in computational and applied mathematics. Throughout the book, the authors explore well-known and proposed algorithms with a view toward analyzing their quality and the range of their efficiency. The concept of the approach taken is based on several theories (of computations, of optimal algorithms, of interpolation, interlination, and interflatation of functions, to name several). Theoretical principles and practical aspects of testing the quality of algorithms and applied software, are a major component of the exposition. The computer technology in construction of T-efficient algorithms for computing ε-solutions to problems of computational and applied mathematics, is also explored. The readership for this monograph is aimed at scientists, postgraduate students, advanced students, and specialists dealing with issues of developing algorithmic and software support for the solution of problems of computational and applied mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of the many by-products of Moore’s Law, personal computers have, in recent decades, become powerful enough to record real-time eye movements with video-based eye trackers. The decrease in the prices of eye tracking systems (ETSs) has been accelerating since the 1990s, and their use in a variety of scientific domains expanding. ETSs and related applications have shown a lot of promise in recent years, and their widespread and ever-increasing use in mainstream/personal equipment for daily life has transformed them from a novelty into a relatively common tool. This book showcases the state of the art in current eye tracking research by bringing together work from a wide range of application areas. It grew out of the 3rd International Conference on Eye Tracking, Visual Cognition and Emotion (ETVCE 12), held at the Lusophone University, Lisbon, Portugal (October 2012). This book provides an overview of the latest research in a broad range of disciplines for which eye-movement is relevant, and will inspire the intersection of knowledge between these areas. However, this is not a book of Proceedings. Rather, it is an edited, peer-reviewed selection of chapters based on presentations at the conference, and also includes invited chapters by authors who were not able to attend the conference. The efforts of these contributors have resulted in a state-of-art book which will inspire and guide students, lecturers, researchers and developers in eye-tracking research, and stimulate the use of eye-tracking across scientific disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on the successful formula of the first edition, Martin Tovée offers a concise but detailed account of how the visual system is organised and functions to produce visual perception. He takes his readers from first principles; the structure and function of the eye and what happens when light enters, to how we see and process images, recognise patterns and faces, and through to the most recent discoveries in molecular genetics and brain imaging, and how they have uncovered a host of new advances in our understanding of how visual information is processed within the brain. Incorporating new material throughout, including almost 50 new images, every chapter has been updated to include the latest research, and culminates in helpful key points, which summarise the lessons learnt. This book is an invaluable course text for students within the fields of psychology, neuroscience, biology and physiology.

With a unique interdisciplinary approach, this volume is among the first to explore the cognitive and neural mechanisms mediating the generation of the preferences that guide choice. From preferences determining mundane purchases, to social preferences influencing mating choice, through to moral decisions, the authors adopt diverse approaches to answer the question. Chapters explore the instability of preferences and the common neural processes that occur across preferences. Edited by one of the world's most renowned cognitive neuroscientists, each chapter is authored by an expert in the field, with a host of international contributors. Emphasis on common process underlying preference generation makes material applicable to a variety of disciplines - neuroscience, psychology, economics, law, philosophy, etc. Offers specific focus on how preferences are generated to guide decision making, carefully examining one aspect of the broad field of neuroeconomics and complementing existing volumes Features outstanding, international scholarship, with chapters written by an expert in the topic area
