Download or read book Dizziness written by Gregory T. Whitman and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Drs. Gregory Whitman, an otoneurologist, and Robert Baloh, a neurologist, have written a remarkably readable and compassionate book for anyone who has dizziness, whether acutely, episodically, or chronically. Their book describes the conditions that cause dizziness and explains what people with dizziness can do to feel better. For older people especially, addressing dizziness means a better chance of avoiding a fall and retaining independence. The authors begin by explaining why it's important to overcome dizziness and describing how dizziness is diagnosed and treated. They then describe two conditions--benign paroxysmal positional vertigo and orthostatic hypotension--which cause dizzy spells when a person changes position. Next are the causes of dizzy spells that happen in attacks and without any trigger, most prominently Meniere's disease and migraine-associated dizziness. The third part of the book is for people who have a single bout of dizziness that lasts for days and then gradually improves, generally brought on by either vestibular neuritis or stroke and transient ischemic attacks (TIAs). Finally, the authors explore the causes of constant dizziness that lasts for days, months, and even years. These are anxiety, Mal de debarquement Syndrome, dizziness due to loss of function in both ears, and small vessel ischemic disease. An Appendix offers advice about home exercises for dizziness, and a Glossary defines terms. This book stands to become the definitive consumer health book on this topic. With the aging of the population, dizziness will become a more common problem, so the book may also be of interest and use to primary care providers"--

Book Synopsis Feeling Faint by : Giulio J. Pertile
Download or read book Feeling Faint written by Giulio J. Pertile and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feeling Faint is a book about human consciousness in its most basic sense: the awareness, at any given moment, that we live and feel. Such awareness, it argues, is distinct from the categories of selfhood to which it is often assimilated, and can only be uncovered at the margins of first-person experience. What would it mean to be conscious without being a first person—to be conscious in the absence of a self? Such a phenomenon, subsequently obscured by the Enlightenment identification of consciousness and personal identity, is what we discover in scenes of swooning from the Renaissance: consciousness without self, consciousness reconceived as what Frederic Jameson calls "a registering apparatus for transformed states of being." Where the early modern period has often been seen in terms of the rise of self-aware subjectivity, Feeling Faint argues that swoons, faints, and trances allow us to conceive of Renaissance subjectivity in a different guise: as the capacity of the senses and passions to experience, regulate, and respond to their own activity without the intervention of first-person awareness. In readings of Renaissance authors ranging from Montaigne to Shakespeare, Pertile shows how self-loss affords embodied consciousness an experience of itself in a moment of intimate vitality which precedes awareness of specific objects or thoughts—an experience with which we are all familiar, and yet which is tantalizingly difficult to pin down.

Book Synopsis The Great Demographic Reversal by : Charles Goodhart
Download or read book The Great Demographic Reversal written by Charles Goodhart and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-08 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original and panoramic book proposes that the underlying forces of demography and globalisation will shortly reverse three multi-decade global trends – it will raise inflation and interest rates, but lead to a pullback in inequality. “Whatever the future holds”, the authors argue, “it will be nothing like the past”. Deflationary headwinds over the last three decades have been primarily due to an enormous surge in the world’s available labour supply, owing to very favourable demographic trends and the entry of China and Eastern Europe into the world’s trading system. This book demonstrates how these demographic trends are on the point of reversing sharply, coinciding with a retreat from globalisation. The result? Ageing can be expected to raise inflation and interest rates, bringing a slew of problems for an over-indebted world economy, but is also anticipated to increase the share of labour, so that inequality falls. Covering many social and political factors, as well as those that are more purely macroeconomic, the authors address topics including ageing, dementia, inequality, populism, retirement and debt finance, among others. This book will be of interest and understandable to anyone with an interest on where the world’s economy may be going.

During her time as the lead US negotiator of the historic Iran nuclear deal and throughout her distinguished career, Wendy Sherman has amassed tremendous expertise in the most pressing foreign policy issues of our time. Throughout her life -- from growing up in civil-rights-era Baltimore, to stints as a social worker, campaign manager, and business owner, to advising multiple presidents -- she has relied on values that have shaped her approach to work and leadership: authenticity, effective use of power and persistence, acceptance of change, and commitment to the team. Not for the Faint of Heart takes readers inside the world of international diplomacy and into the mind of one of our most effective negotiators -- often the only woman in the room. She shows why good work in her field is so hard to do, and how we can learn to apply core skills of diplomacy to the challenges in our own lives.

Book Synopsis White Fragility by : Dr. Robin DiAngelo
Download or read book White Fragility written by Dr. Robin DiAngelo and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2018-06-26 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times best-selling book exploring the counterproductive reactions white people have when their assumptions about race are challenged, and how these reactions maintain racial inequality. In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to ‘bad people’ (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves that white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent any meaningful cross-racial dialogue. In this in-depth exploration, DiAngelo examines how white fragility develops, how it protects racial inequality, and what we can do to engage more constructively.
