Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feeding The People, Feeding the Spirit is an indigenous foods resource for Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest. Even though this book contains many voices, they speak as one when they say, "Our traditional foods matter." The book documents a 2008 community-based research project where Northwest Indian College Traditional Plants and Foods Program staff worked with archaeologists, tribal elders, cultural specialists, hunters, gatherers and cooks to determine what foods were eaten before European contact, barriers to accessing those foods today, and actions that native communities are taking to strengthen traditional food systems. It is divided into four chapters, including cultural stories of native foods, the impacts of colonization on food traditions, current efforts to revitalize native foods access, and how to identify, harvest and prepare many of those foods. Traditional foods principles and information on making healthy grocery store choices are included, along with a recipe section that features many delicious dishes including nettle pesto, native berry crisp, and roasted elk with wild blackberry sauce. This text includes culturally sensitive information; distribution is limited to native people and those who serve their health and communities.

Book excerpt: Two unsung women whose power using food as a political weapon during the civil rights movement was so great it brought the ire of government agents working against them In early 1969 Cleo Silvers and a few Black Panther Party members met at a community center laden with boxes of donated food to cook for the neighborhood children. By the end of the year, the Black Panthers would be feeding more children daily in all of their breakfast programs than the state of California was at that time. More than a thousand miles away, Aylene Quin had spent the decade using her restaurant in McComb, Mississippi, to host secret planning meetings of civil rights leaders and organizations, feed the hungry, and cement herself as a community leader who could bring people together—physically and philosophically—over a meal. These two women's tales, separated by a handful of years, tell the same story: how food was used by women as a potent and necessary ideological tool in both the rural south and urban north to create lasting social and political change. The leadership of these women cooking and serving food in a safe space for their communities was so powerful, the FBI resorted to coordinated extensive and often illegal means to stop the efforts of these two women, and those using similar tactics, under COINTELPRO--turning a blind eye to the firebombing of the children of a restaurant owner, destroying food intended for poor kids, and declaring a community breakfast program a major threat to public safety. But of course, it was never just about the food.

There's so much confusion about what to eat. Are you jumping from diet to diet and nothing seems to work? Are you sick of seeing contradictory health advice from experts? Just like the tobacco industry lied to us about the dangers of cigarettes, the same untruths, cover-ups, and deceptive practices are occurring in the food industry. Vani Hari, aka The Food Babe, blows the lid off the lies we've been fed about the food we eat--lies about its nutrient value, effects on our health, label information, and even the very science we base our food choices on. You'll discover: • How nutrition research is manipulated by food company funded experts • How to spot fake news generated by Big Food • The tricks food companies use to make their food addictive • Why labels like "all natural" and "non-GMO" aren't what they seem and how to identify the healthiest food • Food marketing hoaxes that persuade us into buying junk food disguised as health food Vani guides you through a 48-hour Toxin Takedown to rid your pantry, and your body, of harmful chemicals--a quick and easy plan that anyone can do. This powerful five-step practice forms a strategy for transforming negative emotions, relationships, fears, illness and self-defeating patterns. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Special Book For You, This Book Will Change Your Life. In the changing and often ambiguous world of modern age, Christians need to hold firmly unto the Word of Christ to guide them in their daily life. The Gospel is the light along the path of those who are experiencing dark and difficult days; it's the light of hope to the broken heart. It's Spirit and Life. The Bible emphasizes the theme of food because it wants to make us understand spiritual nutrition. Food is important for the physical and spiritual health. No spirit can live without spiritual food. As the physical body continually needs food, so does the spirit. A major problem is that human nature compels us to focus almost totally upon the physical. We live in a world obsessed with outer improvement. People live in debt to maintain a glamorous appearance. Many people either in ignorance or willingly neglect taking care of their spiritual bodies. Life is not ultimately physical and the flesh is not the whole man. God provides us "Israel's experiences in the wilderness" to let us know that there is a spiritual aspect to life that requires feeding and maintenance, just as surely as the physical. The spiritual food is merely the food for your spirit or your spiritual body. It is amazing to know that you have to nourish your spirit on a daily basis just the same as you do with your flesh. Your spirit has a kind of food that the flesh knows nothing about. What food does your spirit need? Yes, this is a challenging question that deserves a proper answer. Spiritual bodies eat the word of God and drink the presence of God. God and His word are the sustenance of eternal and abundant life. We find in the word of God all the energy, vitamins and proteins that our spiritual body requires. We cannot be spiritually healthy without feeding upon the word of God. We can visit hundreds of different stores to get food to eat, and the food we buy from them will make us feel strong physically. However, there is only one place where we get the food that will feed us spiritually: God is the only provider of spiritual food. God's Word is just as essential to spiritual life as food is to physical life. Just as one must discipline oneself to provide and eat physical food, so must one exercise discipline to seek and ingest spiritual food. If one will not do this, then, just as physical health will decline without adequate food, a person's inadequate spiritual diet will lead to spiritual disease. Each person loves his body and nourishes it. However, many people neglect their inward being, they clean the outside of the cup but the inside is dirty. The real man is not the flesh, but the spirit that dwells inside the body (Job 32:8). It is therefore vitally important to take good care of the spirit rather than the body. The demands of the body, although important, are nothing compared to those of the soul. Seek the right spiritual food and feed your soul. I hope this book will be a source of blessings in your life and God bless you!

Book excerpt: “He said to him the third time, ‘Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?’ Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, ‘Do you love Me?’ And he said to Him, ‘Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed My sheep.’” (John 21:17, NKJV) Psychotherapy, indeed, all disciplines that follow the medical model, is about eradicating pathogens (sickness) and promoting healing (therapy). Spirituality and nutrition focus upon our wellbeing or wholeness. Christ instructs those who love Him to “feed My sheep.” Bishop T. D. Jakes instructs that we are to feed the things that feed us. In joining psychotherapy with spirituality we avoid dichotomous thinking (either/or) with systems thinking (both/and). Our spiritual essences (core beliefs) influence the strategic planning of the mind that is carried out by our physical essence. In this book, “What We Feed Grows: The Journey toward Wholeness,” dovetails these seemingly disparate world-views of theology/psychology or faith/science; along with wellbeing and healing. As spiritual exemplars or spiritual disciples, our tasks are simple to “Feed My sheep” with the spiritual sustenance (spiritual fruit) that facilitates spiritual wellbeing and good mental health.

Book excerpt: Where do you seek God? Are you waiting for him to appear in a monumental, life-altering event? In God Moments, Catholic blogger Andy Otto shows you how to discover the unexpected beauty of God’s presence in the story of ordinary things and in everyday routines like preparing breakfast or walking in the woods. Drawing on the Ignatian principles of awareness, prayer, and discernment, Otto will help you discover the transforming power of God’s presence in your life and better understand your place in the world. Andy Otto found God’s presence in surprising moments during his life—when, as a Jesuit scholastic, he taught children in Jamaica and also as he discerned the call to marriage with his wife. By combining elements of Ignatian spirituality with the lessons that came from his experiences, Otto identified three practices that helped him find God in all things: Awareness—Gain an understanding that God is present in the ordinary messiness of our lives such as battle with depression or sharing in the struggle of a friend. Prayer—Develop a prayer life using Ignatian practices such as asking for a morning grace and examining how your prayer was answered at the end of the day. That way you can focus on a personal relationship with God that finds everyday physical activities such as making a meal as an opportunity to talk to him. Discernment—The more you are aware of God’s presence and draw closer to him in prayer, the better you can learn how to plug into God’s narrative of the world in a way that enables you to participate in the divine story through the use of your gifts and talents. With God Moments as a guide, you’ll have a better understanding of how to seek personal wholeness in the reality of God’s presence in the ordinary and learn to accept his invitation to participate in his transformation of the world.

Book excerpt: Most people desire the Power, the anointing, the effectiveness that Jesus had but they seem really not to walk in it. As a result, they get frustrated and stop trying, and settle where they are, which is barely enough. A lot has been taught on the love of God, His faithfulness, mercies, forgiveness, power, and people seem to have grasped this so far. The question still remains, what is stopping Christians from living an abundant life? Why is there still so much hopelessness and sin in the world today? This book unravels the missing puzzle, that of the believer s cooperation with the Holy Spirit in allowing us to conform to His image through the process of spiritual growth. The book ties deep key truths necessary for the believer to become effective in doing the good works He created us for. The book will help you set your mind above, and walk in supernatural abilities that will will fascinate you. Your life is about to change in a way you have never imagined possible.
