This book was released on 2017-06-04 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skilled technical occupationsâ€"defined as occupations that require a high level of knowledge in a technical domain but do not require a bachelor's degree for entryâ€"are a key component of the U.S. economy. In response to globalization and advances in science and technology, American firms are demanding workers with greater proficiency in literacy and numeracy, as well as strong interpersonal, technical, and problem-solving skills. However, employer surveys and industry and government reports have raised concerns that the nation may not have an adequate supply of skilled technical workers to achieve its competitiveness and economic growth objectives. In response to the broader need for policy information and advice, Building America's Skilled Technical Workforce examines the coverage, effectiveness, flexibility, and coordination of the policies and various programs that prepare Americans for skilled technical jobs. This report provides action-oriented recommendations for improving the American system of technical education, training, and certification.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's rapidly changing world a constant renewal of knowledge and skills in every human endeavour can be observed. The characteristics of workers and the jobs that they perform have been attended by technological, social, and political change on a global scale. New forms of employment have made work more mobile to an extent never experienced before. An increasing proportion of workers no longer need come to their employer's job site in order to do their work. The instability of employment is creating a new breed of workers who know how to move efficiently from one job to another. As a consequence workers need flexible qualifications to perform jobs. Key qualifications are the answer! Key qualifications provide the key to rapid and effective acquisition of new knowledge and skills. First, qualifications enable workers to react effectively to, and exercise initiative in, changes to their work. Second, qualifications enable workers to shape their own career in a time of diminishing job security, nowadays frequently defined as `employability'.

Of the hearings held in the District of Columbia the first focused on the Pell Grant and Stafford Loan programs and featured witnesses from around the country addressing educational finance. The second hearing focused on the process of accreditation, certification and licensing that determines institutional participation in the Federal student aid programs and featured witnesses from educational institutions, and professional associations. The final hearing presented the testimony of college executives, representatives of educational associations and others on Title VI (which supports international education) and Title III (concerned with institutional aid and funding for institutional facilities). The hearings in other cities provided an opportunity for legislators to hear additional suggestions and recommendations from students, teachers, administrators, institutional executives and state agencies on the reauthorization of higher education programs. Included are the prepared statements of the witnesses as well as additional statements, correspondence and supplemental material. (JB)
