Book excerpt: For Marie the Chinaberry trees she grew up with as a child held fond memories. They were a comfort zone' she would retreat to when life's road became too rocky for her to bear. Those trees were always there so was the love she felt for Walt. Walt was her first love and years later he still remained deep within her heart. The comfort she received from the memories of the Chinaberry trees and the love she continued to feel for Walt were the two constants in her life. They were forever there in her mind and in her heart. Chinaberry Trees Forever is for those who secretly carry the memories of their first love hidden deep inside of them. It is a book that will touch the hearts of all of those who have loved and lost, and it will give hope and encouragement to those who think it is too late for them. Most importantly, Chinaberry Trees Forever will let all of those with lost loves know that they are not alone.

Book excerpt: A few years back I was going through a particularly difficult time and one day I cried out to God and asked Him that if He was with me, if He really cared, I needed a sign. I prayed that He would send me a feather. At the time it was the only thing I could think of. Little did I know at the time how powerful and significant this prayer would be over my life. Later that day I was outside weed eating and I had already forgotten about the prayer and down comes a feather! I had chills from head to toe that hot summer day! I kept that feather and continued mowing and there was another feather! That week I continued finding feathers everywhere. I was also finding them during moments of prayer or when a major problem was testing me and my husband. I have also come to notice when I share my story with others they begin to find feathers during particular moments in their lives. My neighbor who is also a good friend shared with me that her grandkids are now always finding feathers. They always come to her and say, "Look meme! A angel wing!" This is a fully illustrated book in color by Laurinda Brinson: I have been painting for 40+ years and am basically a self-taught artist. In my younger days I taught classes for a local craft store. One of my favorite jobs was working for a well-known furniture manufacturer doing hand painted furniture for about nine years. It never felt like a job because I was always doing what I loved and that was painting. During this time I was privileged to get to paint at Furniture Market and do some designing. I am retired from a public job now but stay busier than ever. In the last couple of years I have been illustrating children's books. This has challenged me in ways I never imagined, but I love learning how to do things. I never want to quit learning. I am also a self-taught jewelry artist and make jewelry to go with books of various writers. The Lord has blessed me in being able to create and make things easily. I give him all the credit. He has been my main teacher through the years and my inspiration.

In this exquisite anthology, esteemed poets from America, Italy, and elsewhere follow the renowned Piero Trail, a route through Tuscany and Umbria that features some of the most acclaimed frescoes by the legendary Renaissance painter, Piero della Francesca. The resulting poems—including ones by Henri Cole, Jorie Graham, Charles Wright, and Patti Smtih—capture Piero’s incomparable influence in the artistic, literary, and spiritual worlds, generated as they are by the transcendence of Piero’s timeless powers. Including twelve reproductions of Piero’s frescoes, a foreword by Rosanna Warren, and an introduction by anthologist Dana Prescott, Feathers from the Angel’s Wing is unforgettable collection, a book to be cherished by lovers of art, artists, and the spirits that move them.

Book excerpt: Birds Without Wings traces the fortunes of one small community in southwest Turkey (Anatolia) in the early part of the last century—a quirky community in which Christian and Muslim lives and traditions have co-existed peacefully over the centuries and where friendship, even love, has transcended religious differences. But with the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire and the onset of the Great War, the sweep of history has a cataclysmic effect on this peaceful place: The great love of Philothei, a Christian girl of legendary beauty, and Ibrahim, a Muslim shepherd who courts her from near infancy, culminates in tragedy and madness; Two inseparable childhood friends who grow up playing in the hills above the town suddenly find themselves on opposite sides of the bloody struggle; and Rustem Bey, a wealthy landlord, who has an enchanting mistress who is not what she seems. Far away from these small lives, a man of destiny who will come to be known as Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is emerging to create a country from the ruins of an empire. Victory at Gallipoli fails to save the Ottomans from ultimate defeat and, as a new conflict arises, Muslims and Christians struggle to survive, let alone understand, their part in the great tragedy that will reshape the whole region forever.

Book excerpt: As heard on NPR's This American Life “Absorbing . . . Though it's non-fiction, The Feather Thief contains many of the elements of a classic thriller.” —Maureen Corrigan, NPR’s Fresh Air “One of the most peculiar and memorable true-crime books ever.” —Christian Science Monitor A rollicking true-crime adventure and a captivating journey into an underground world of fanatical fly-tiers and plume peddlers, for readers of The Stranger in the Woods, The Lost City of Z, and The Orchid Thief. On a cool June evening in 2009, after performing a concert at London's Royal Academy of Music, twenty-year-old American flautist Edwin Rist boarded a train for a suburban outpost of the British Museum of Natural History. Home to one of the largest ornithological collections in the world, the Tring museum was full of rare bird specimens whose gorgeous feathers were worth staggering amounts of money to the men who shared Edwin's obsession: the Victorian art of salmon fly-tying. Once inside the museum, the champion fly-tier grabbed hundreds of bird skins—some collected 150 years earlier by a contemporary of Darwin's, Alfred Russel Wallace, who'd risked everything to gather them—and escaped into the darkness. Two years later, Kirk Wallace Johnson was waist high in a river in northern New Mexico when his fly-fishing guide told him about the heist. He was soon consumed by the strange case of the feather thief. What would possess a person to steal dead birds? Had Edwin paid the price for his crime? What became of the missing skins? In his search for answers, Johnson was catapulted into a years-long, worldwide investigation. The gripping story of a bizarre and shocking crime, and one man's relentless pursuit of justice, The Feather Thief is also a fascinating exploration of obsession, and man's destructive instinct to harvest the beauty of nature.
