While these emerging technologies have powered new applications, novel industrial engineering methodologies are required to achieve the goals. Industrial Engineering was sprouted from major engineering disciplines that called for better professional understanding of industrialization. Ever since, the discipline of Industrial Engineering has been the star role player in confronting emerging industries; be it manufacturing, service, high tech products, outer space technology, information technology, industrial policy, ergonomics, and now the world’s greatest concern, sustainable development. This book presents the state-of-the-art in industrial engineering research from different countries and cities around the globe. The book covers a wide range of topics in industrial engineering, including: Demand Chain Management, E-business / Information Technology, Evolutionary Algorithm, Green Manufacturing/Management, Health Care Systems and more.

This book was released on 2018 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To mitigate climate change, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) and particulate emissions, contribute towards energy independence and security, and promote sustainable economic development in the United States (U.S.), cellulosic biofuels have been considered as potential replacement fuels for petroleum-derived fuels. While biofuels offer many environmental and socioeconomic benefits, commercial scale biorefineries are not prominent in the U.S. High feedstock costs and capital investment costs are two of the biggest challenges prohibiting the advancement of commercial scale biofuel production. This study reduced feedstock costs to supply a 250 Gg feedstock capacity cellulosic ethanol biorefinery in western Washington by 22% by incorporating local, low-cost hardwood sawmill residues and hybrid poplar from treated wastewater management ecosystem service with the traditional method of suppling biomass (hybrid poplar) from purpose-grown plantations. The proposed biorefinery is modeled producing 75 megaliters of cellulosic ethanol annually. The proposed biorefinery design, referred to as the Integrated design case, assumes co-location with an adjacent power plant, eliminating the need for an in-house boiler/turbogenerator and wastewater treatment system by using a multi-effect evaporator to evaporate waste streams into combustible syrup for steam production. Two additional design cases are further evaluated for comparison: (1) Non-integrated design case producing 75 megaliters of ethanol annually, and (2) Integrated, Increased Production design case producing 189 megaliters of ethanol annually. Under the Integrated design case, total capital investment is reduced by 38%, installed equipment costs are reduced by 43%, and electricity use is decreased by 64% as compared to the Non-integrated design case. A 38% reduction in total capital investment per liter can be realized by scaling biorefinery ethanol production up to 189 megaliters per year using the integrated design approach. Discounted cash flow rate of return analysis is used to evaluate economic performance and ethanol minimum selling price. Under the most realistic financing scenario, 40% loan and 15% discount rate, the Integrated, Increased Production design case incorporating integrated approaches, including using mixed feedstock supply sources, achieves the lowest minimum ethanol selling price of $0.67/liter, resulting in a 31% reduction in ethanol minimum selling price compared to the Non-integrated design case and a 19% reduction compared to the Integrated design case. Life cycle carbon analysis (quantifying global warming potential (GWP) contribution in CO2 eq. MJ-1) of the Integrated design case is conducted, yielding a 52% reduction in GWP as compared to 2005 gasoline production and use. This study provides a framework for incorporating integrated approaches into biorefinery design using local context to realize economic and environmental gains.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the present and future of bioethanol biorefinery technologies. It discusses the efficient use of feedstock in bioethanol production, and critically reviews the environmental sustainability of bioethanol production. In addition, it describes the integrated production of bioelectricity, biopolymers, organic acids, and other biomolecules, as well as the use of process-related liquid and solid byproducts and/or wastes during bioethanol generation. Since the bioethanol industry has also led the automotive industry to explore new avenues, this book summarizes the various aspects of ethanol motorization, hybrid engine development, and biofuel electrification. For decades, clean and renewable alternatives have been sought to reduce dependence on petroleum-based fossil fuels and CO2 emissions. Bioethanol appears as one of the best solutions for the production of biofuels, bioenergy and biochemicals, along with the establishment of new biorefinery concepts and a circular bioeconomy. Therefore, the ideas and technologies presented in this book contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy. This book is a useful reference for postgraduate students and researchers interested in biorefinery and biofuel technologies, both in academia- and commercial laboratories. Early career scientists can use it to fast track into the field. Advanced scientists will find it helpful to gain a broader overview of the field beyond their area of specialization.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of a small, (365 MWt) nuclear reactor for supplying process steam and electricity as a replacement for energy sources using increasingly scarce natural gas or oil. The PPG Industries, Incorporated Plant Site at Lake Charles, Louisiana, was chosen as representative of industrial installations that require sizeable amounts of process steam and electricity. For comparison purposes conventional coal-fired boilers were also evaluated. It was determined that both nuclear- and coal-based process energy supply systems are technically feasible. For the specific steam/electricity demands at the reference site, the coal-fired plant proved to be economically more attractive than the nuclear units. For an application requiring a base-loaded supply of saturated steam, utilizing full reactor capacity, the nuclear option appears competitive for coal costing $40/ton in 1978 dollars.

This book was released on 2023-08-31 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The secure storage of energy and carbon dioxide in subsurface geological formations plays a crucial role in transitioning to a low-carbon energy system. The suitability and security of subsurface storage sites rely on the geological and hydraulic properties of the reservoir and confining units. Additionally, their ability to withstand varying thermal, mechanical, hydraulic, biological and chemical conditions during storage operations is essential. Each subsurface storage technology has distinct geological requirements and faces specific economic, logistical, public and scientific challenges. As a result, certain sites can be better suited than others for specific low-carbon energy applications. This Special Publication provides a summary of the state of the art in subsurface energy and carbon dioxide storage. It includes 20 case studies that offer insights into site selection, characterization of reservoir processes, the role of caprocks and fault seals, as well as monitoring and risk assessment needs for subsurface storage operations.
