Book excerpt: Steve Nadler is a doctor at a Harlem medical clinic in New York. He was having a day like any other until a woman stumbled into his waiting room with a knife wound to the ribs. The injured woman subsequently dies, but not before Steve notices and records a strange tattooed map on her upper thigh. Steve shares the photo of the tattoo with his attractive female neighbor who directs him to a private investigator. The PI makes a shocking discovery: the tattoo is a map denoting the location of the fabled treasure of infamous early twentieth-century gangster, Dutch Schultz. Unfortunately, Steve isn’t the only one who knows about the woman’s tattoo. The New York City medical examiner enlists the help of his friend, a Manhattan police captain, and the two pals hatch a plan to hunt for Schultz’s treasure in the forest surrounding the sleepy town of Phoenicia, New York. Steve and his crew have similar ambitions and arrive in Phoenicia at the same time. However, neither party anticipates the shocking evil that lurks within the dark notches of the Catskill Mountains.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around 550 B.C.E. the Persian people--who were previously practically unknown in the annals of history--emerged from their base in southern Iran (Fars) and engaged in a monumental adventure that, under the leadership of Cyrus the Great and his successors, culminated in the creation of an immense Empire that stretched from central Asia to Upper Egypt, from the Indus to the Danube. The Persian (or Achaemenid, named for its reigning dynasty) Empire assimilated an astonishing diversity of lands, peoples, languages, and cultures. This conquest of Near Eastern lands completely altered the history of the world: for the first time, a monolithic State as vast as the future Roman Empire arose, expanded, and matured in the course of more than two centuries (530-330) and endured until the death of Alexander the Great (323), who from a geopolitical perspective was "the last of the Achaemenids." Even today, the remains of the Empire-the terraces, palaces, reliefs, paintings, and enameled bricks of Pasargadae, Persepolis, and Susa; the impressive royal tombs of Naqsh-i Rustam; the monumental statue of Darius the Great-serve to remind visitors of the power and unprecedented luxury of the Great Kings and their loyal courtiers (the "Faithful Ones"). Though long eclipsed and overshadowed by the towering prestige of the "ancient Orient" and "eternal Greece," Achaemenid history has emerged into fresh light during the last two decades. Freed from the tattered rags of "Oriental decadence" and "Asiatic stagnation," research has also benefited from a continually growing number of discoveries that have provided important new evidence-including texts, as well as archaeological, numismatic, and iconographic artifacts. The evidence that this book assembles is voluminous and diverse: the citations of ancient documents and of the archaeological evidence permit the reader to follow the author in his role as a historian who, across space and time, attempts to understand how such an Empire emerged, developed, and faded. Though firmly grounded in the evidence, the author's discussions do not avoid persistent questions and regularly engages divergent interpretations and alternative hypotheses. This book is without precedent or equivalent, and also offers an exhaustive bibliography and thorough indexes. The French publication of this magisterial work in 1996 was acclaimed in newspapers and literary journals. Now Histoire de l'Empire Perse: De Cyrus a Alexandre is translated in its entirety in a revised edition, with the author himself reviewing the translation, correcting the original edition, and adding new documentation. Pierre Briant, Chaire Histoire et civilisation du monde achémenide et de l'empire d'Alexandre, Collège de France, is a specialist in the history of the Near East during the era of the Persian Empire and the conquests of Alexander. He is the author of numerous books. Peter T. Daniels, the translator, is an independent scholar, editor, and translator who studied at Cornell University and the University of Chicago. He lives and works in New York City.

Book excerpt: From a New York Times bestseller, a sci-fi “novel of great charm and freshness, with improbable situations, weird complications, vital characters . . . ” (Kirkus Reviews). What if the entire universe happened to be the creation of alien minds? Dreens are extraordinary storytellers—and they can actually make the worlds they imagine come to life—and this is the origin of Earth and the entire known universe. Even though Dreens live far across the universe, the human race has the technology for interstellar travel and the military power to destroy the aliens’ core planet. But Earth itself is only sustained by the continued existence of the Dreens. If the last Dreen dies, all of humanity will disappear! A science fiction adventure showcasing the imagination that made Frank Herbert famous and the wry wit and satire that brought Brian Herbert critical acclaim.

Book excerpt: The writings of Herodotus, historian, observer, and delightful storyteller, have long been favorites among teachers and students of the Greek language. The selections in this book will provide reading in the second year for the student who has begun his or her Greek with Homer and who presumably has had no acquaintance with Attic Greek. The book is equally well fitted for the use of the student who has begun in the orthodox fashion with Attic Greek and followed it by Homer. This second Oklahoma edition is enhanced by Megan O. Drinkwater's addition of chapter and section references to the complete works of Herodotus.

Book excerpt: On Oct, 23, 1935, a rusty, steel-jacketed .45 slug tore through the body of 33-year-old Dutch Schultz, the Beer Baron of The Bronx who reaped $2 million a month as king of Harlem's numbers racket. It was no accident. The Dutchman had gone too far, having threatened to murder Thomas E. Dewey-the racket's prosecutor who'd drawn up the tax indictment against him. The result was the biggest gangland execution since the 1929 St. Valentine's Day Massacre in Al Capone's Chicago. In this 1930s real-life whodunit set in the Prohibition era, legendary New York newspaperman Paul Sann investigates the meteoric rise of gangster Dutch Schultz (born Arthur Flegenheimer), mean-streaked bully, alleged killer and reader of books, tracking the blood-flecked story from the Lower East Side and Bronx sidewalks, to Broadway night spots, lavish Park Avenue penthouses and, ultimately, to City Hall-along the way uncovering the truces and alliances among politicians, police, unions and racketeers. But Schultz didn't die instantly, lingering over a day, a police stenographer at his bedside recording his every word. Dutch's surrealistic, Joycean stream-of-consciousness deathbed ramblings are reproduced here in full and Sann explores the meaning of the poetic jumble of some of his last words: "I am a pretty good pretzeler [sic], Please crack down on the Chinaman's friends and Hitler's commander," and his most majestic utterance, "Mother is the best bet and don't let Satan draw you too fast."
