Book Synopsis China’s Rise and the Balance of Influence in Asia by : William W. Keller
Download or read book China’s Rise and the Balance of Influence in Asia written by William W. Keller and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2007-06-29 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's protracted boom and political transformation is a major episode in the history of global political economy. Beginning in the late 1970s, China experienced a quarter century of extraordinary growth that raised every indicator of material welfare, lifted several hundred million out of poverty, and rocketed China from near autarky to regional and even global prominence. These striking developments transformed China into a major U.S. trade and investment partner, a regional military power, and a major influence on national economies and cross-national interchange throughout the Pacific region. Beijing has emerged as a voice for East Asian economic interests and an arbiter in regional and even global diplomacy-from the Asian financial crisis to the North Korean nuclear talks. China's accession to the World Trade Organization promises to accentuate these trends. The contributors to this volume provide a multifaceted examination of China in the areas of economics, trade, investment, politics, diplomacy, technology, and security, affording a greater understanding of what relevant policies the United States must develop. This book offers a counterweight to overwrought concerns about the emerging “Chinese threat” and makes the case for viewing China as a force for stability in the twenty-first century.
Book Synopsis Russian Currency and Finance by : Steve H. Hanke
Download or read book Russian Currency and Finance written by Steve H. Hanke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-18 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the new Russian state struggles with the transition to a market economy, the need for radical monetary reform becomes increasingly urgent. The choice of reform is crucial, for it will largely determine Russia's future economic performance. In order to break free of the lingering effects of Soviet central planning, the new Russian state needs a stable, convertible currency. Steve H. Hanke, Lars Jonung and Kurt Schuler propose that Russia establishes a currency board which would issue a Russian currency fully convertible with international currency, backed 100 per cent by international bonds. The international community would aid in establishing the currency board by providing the initial reserves. Early supplies of this new Russian currency would be distributed free to Russian citizens. The authors give detailed explanations of how the currency board could be established and how it would work.

Book Synopsis Beyond Yugoslavia by : Sabrina Petra Ramet
Download or read book Beyond Yugoslavia written by Sabrina Petra Ramet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-22 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fruit of a landmark international collaboration, this book focuses on the final years of socialist Yugoslavia and on the beginning of the country's breakup. With chapters devoted to each of erstwhile Yugoslavia's six republics, the book also offers a unique blend of thematic essays on political, cultural, economic, environmental, religious, and foreign policy issues. Bringing together renowned scholars from the United States, Great Britain, Serbia, and Croatia, the book shows how disintegrative tendencies penetrated and affected all spheres of life in Yugoslavia. The resultant war has, therefore, been fought not only on military and diplomatic fronts, but also at the level of economics, through literature and film, and in the spheres of religion and gender relations.
