Book Synopsis Michael William Balfe by : William Tyldesley
Download or read book Michael William Balfe written by William Tyldesley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without doubt, Michael William Balfe (1808-1870) was the most successful composer of English opera in the mid nineteenth century. During his lifetime he enjoyed an international reputation and worked with some of the leading singers of the time, including Jenny Lind, Malibran and Grisi. Drawing on previously unused source materials such as letters, legal documents and playbills, this biography of Balfe and in-depth study of his English operas overturns many of the previously accepted 'facts' of the composer's lifestyle. Using London as his base, Dublin-born Balfe spent long periods in Paris and travelled widely in Europe. William Tyldesley discusses the continental influences evident in Balfe's operas and offers new suggestions as to the draw that Paris held for the composer. Far from leading a fairly prosperous and unexceptional life, Balfe is shown to have found himself in financial straits on more than one occasion, and to have employed possibly unethical means of extracting himself from them. Those wishing to perform Balfe's works or to do further research into them, will find Tyldesley's re-examination of the composer a necessary first port of call.

Book Synopsis Mozart's Così Fan Tutte by : Michael Steen
Download or read book Mozart's Così Fan Tutte written by Michael Steen and published by Icon Books Ltd. This book was released on 2012-05-25 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A couple of smooth army officers in metropolitan Naples become increasingly horrified as they find that they are losing their bet with a misogynist philosopher. The wager? That their fiancées will be faithful. Their disguise as Albanians in an attempt to entrap their fiancées, and the complicity of the naughty maid, who feigns as a lawyer organising their ‘marriage’, provide hilarious moments in an opera full of favourite tunes. Lorenzo da Ponte’s libretto was long considered indecent and unsuitable to stage. But today it is regarded as providing one of the greatest illustrations of Mozart’s art of musical characterisation, even if the story is somewhat politically incorrect. The ways in which Mozart’s music contrasts the two ‘provincial’ sisters, Fiordiligi and Dorabella, and presents their capitulation, can justify his reputation as possibly the greatest classical composer of all time. Written by Michael Steen, author of the acclaimed The Lives and Times of the Great Composers, ‘Short Guides to Great Operas’ are concise, entertaining and easy to read books about opera. Each is an opera guide packed with useful information and informed opinion, helping to make you a truly knowledgeable opera-goer, and so maximising your enjoyment of a great musical experience. Other ‘Short Guides to Great Operas’ that you may enjoy include The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni.
Book Synopsis Mozart's Marriage of Figaro by : Michael Steen
Download or read book Mozart's Marriage of Figaro written by Michael Steen and published by Icon Books Ltd. This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the story of Figaro's success in preventing the Count of Almaviva's seduction of his fiancée Susanna was politically explosive, it was tolerated in the court of the relatively enlightened Habsburg Emperor Joseph II. Mozart's opera, Le Nozze di Figaro, uses a libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte, and was premièred in Vienna in 1786. It was based on a famous play by the Frenchman Beaumarchais, a sequel to The Barber of Seville. Characters including Figaro, the Countess, Cherubino the page, Doctor Bartolo and Barberina the gardener's daughter sing a succession of famous arias – such as Se vuol ballare, Non più andrai, Dove sono, Porgi amor and Voi, che sapete, to mention but a few – in which Mozart's musical characterisation is legendary. Written by Michael Steen, author of the acclaimed The Lives and Times of the Great Composers, 'Short Guides to Great Operas' are concise, entertaining and easy to read books about opera. Each is an opera guide packed with useful information and informed opinion, helping to make you a truly knowledgeable opera-goer, and so maximising your enjoyment of a great musical experience. Other 'Short Guides to Great Operas' that you may enjoy include Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni and The Barber of Seville.
