Download or read book Early American written by Sharon Core and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2007, American photographer Sharon Core (born 1965) encountered the work of the early nineteenth-century American still-life painter Raphael Peale (1774-1825). Peale's images of fruit, cakes and vegetables are famed for their uncanny realism, and they inspired Core to undertake a series of photographs titled Early American, a brilliant exploration of trompe l'oeil's relationship to photography, and of photography's relationship to the past. Core replicates as closely as possible the subject matter, lighting and compositional characteristics of Peale's paintings. She describes an extraordinarily intensive preparation for the project, researching and acquiring period porcelain and glass and growing, from heirloom seeds, varieties of fruits and vegetables that were in existence in the early nineteenth century. "Through these efforts," she writes, "I hoped to achieve a mirroring of Peale's painstaking painting process, and the themes that lie under their surfaces." This volume reproduces the 31 images comprising this ambitious enterprise.

Download or read book Memories of the Southern Civil Rights Movement written by Danny Lyon and published by Twin Palms Pub. This book was released on 2010 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Memories of the Southern Civil Rights Movement, Lyon tells the compelling story of how a handful of dedicated young people, both black and white, forged one of the most successful grassroots organizations in American History. The book depicts some of the most violent and dramatic moments of civil rights history including Black Monday in Danville, Virginia; the aftermath of the bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham; the March on Washington in 1964 and the Mississippi Freedom Summer of 1962. In addition to including his own photos, taken as the first staff photographer for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the book includes a selection of historic SNCC documents such as press releases, telephone logs, letters and minutes of meetings. This combination of pictures, eyewitness reports, and text takes the reader inside the civil rights movement, creating both a work of art and an authentic work of history.

Download or read book Cell Tower written by Steven E. Jones and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-03-19 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. Cropping up everywhere, whether steel latticework or tapered monopoles, encrusted with fiberglass antennas, cell towers raise up high into the air the communications equipment that channels our calls, texts, and downloads. For security reasons, their locations are never advertised. But it's our romantic notions of connectivity that hide them in plain sight. We want the network to be invisible, ethereal, and ubiquitous. The cell tower stands as a challenge to these desires. Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.

Weschler combines his keen insights into art, his years of experience as a chronicler of the fall of Communism, and his triumphs and failures as the father of a teenage girl into a series of essays sure to illuminate, educate, and astound.

These stories are honest, finely nuanced and indelible in their impact.' WENDY ERSKINE 'You'll lose yourself in this collection and, most likely, find yourself too. Each story is a masterclass in attentiveness.' JAN CARSON The much-anticipated new collection from the BBC National Short Story Award-winning author of Multitudes and Intimacies. I still sometimes wonder if one could draw a window in the wall, or in the air, and step through it together. To somewhere else, entirely new. From a passionate affair in Blitz-era London, to a highly charged Christmas party in Belfast, to a trip to Marrakech which could form a new family, the thirteen striking stories of Openings pulse with possibility and illuminate those fleeting but recognisable moments of heartbreak and hope that can change the course of a life. 'It takes a writer as subtle, compassionate and clear-eyed as Caldwell to track the hidden forces that work upon us, to illuminate our secret selves. This is prose that liberates.' CLAIRE KILROY 'Caldwell has a glorious skill for creating narratives in which every element works in perfect tandem.' SUNDAY TIMES
