Book Synopsis A Basis for Classifying Western Atlantic Sciaendiae (Teleostei: Perciformes). by : Labbish Ning Chao
Download or read book A Basis for Classifying Western Atlantic Sciaendiae (Teleostei: Perciformes). written by Labbish Ning Chao and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sciaenidae of the western Atlantic consist of 21 genera and at least 57 species, and are placed in 11 suprageneric groups: Cynoscion, Larimus, Lonchurus, Menticirrhus, Micropogonias, Nebria, Pogonias, Sciaena, Sciaenops, Stellifer, and Umbrina groups. The phylogenetic relationships of all western Atlantic genera are assessed on the basis of swim bladder, otoliths (sagitta and lapillus), and external morphology. The stellifer group differs from all other western Atlantic sciaenids in having a two-chambered swim bladder and an enlarged lapillus. Phylogenetic and ontogenetic trends of the swim bladder range from a simple carrot-shape, to a more complicated structure with anterior projections and horns, to a very complicated lateral diverticula system. The sagitta is usually oval or elongate in shape. The thickness and the impression of the sulcus on the inner surface of the sagitta are diagnostic among genera. External morphology is adaptive, especially in relation to feeding habits and habitat, but a trend is evident in that closely related genera often have similar body shapes, mouth positions, and other external features. Species of the genus Stellifer are exceptions in having diverse mouth positions and feeding habits. The synopsis section of the paper includes a diagnosis, a primary synonymy, and lists of types of nominal species for each taxonomic category. Four genera and 22 nominal species of New World freshwater sciaenids are also included. Nomenclatural changes in regard to the genus Micropogon (to Micropogonias) and for the species Bairdiella chrysura (to B. chrysoura) is given. A tested key to species and genera of all western Atlantic sciaenids is included. This paper is designed to serve as a basis for further revision of western Atlantic sciaenids.

Book excerpt: Indexes the world's zoological and animal science literature, covering all research from biochemistry to veterinary medicine. The database provides a collection of references from over 4,500 international serial publications, plus books, meetings, reviews and other no- serial literature from over 100 countries. It is the oldest continuing database of animal biology, indexing literature published from 1864 to the present. Zoological Record has long been recognized as the "unofficial register" for taxonomy and systematics, but other topics in animal biology are also covered.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Devoted to fishes of high latitudes (Arctic and Antarctic). This book includes themes such as: the uniqueness of the physiology of fishes that live in cold polar environments, an analysis of physiological patterns exemplified by fishes that live poles apart, and how fishes differ from fishes living in more temperate and tropical habitats.
Book Synopsis Fishes in Lagoons and Estuaries in the Mediterranean 2 by : Mohamed Hichem Kara
Download or read book Fishes in Lagoons and Estuaries in the Mediterranean 2 written by Mohamed Hichem Kara and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-01-23 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fishes in Lagoons and Estuaries in the Mediterranean 2 extensively covers the systematic, biological, ecological, behavioral and genetic aspects of the sedentary fishes that spend their entire lifecycle in the coastal fringes, sometimes referred to as “extreme environments”. This second volume of a set of books on Mediterranean ichthyofauna presents in-depth scientific, historical and current knowledge at the family, genus and species levels. Designed to give rapid and comprehensive access to the body of knowledge on Mediterranean lagoonal and estuarine sedentary fishes (over 1200 scientific works are referenced), this volume is for anyone involved in the use, management or protection of natural environments and their populations, including ecobiologists, geographers, engineers, teachers, students and researchers.

Book Synopsis Fishes in Lagoons and Estuaries in the Mediterranean 3B by : Mohamed Hichem Kara
Download or read book Fishes in Lagoons and Estuaries in the Mediterranean 3B written by Mohamed Hichem Kara and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the most recent scientific data, and without neglecting historical publications, Fishes in Lagoons and Estuaries in the Mediterranean 3 comprehensively details Mediterranean lagoonal–marine migratory fish. It provides information regarding their systematics, ecobiology, ethology, genetics and their exploitation. This volume, third in a set of books on Mediterranean ichthyofauna, offers a synthesis of the knowledge acquired from 1890 to the present day for each of the 21 species most frequently found in Mediterranean lagoons and estuaries. These species are detailed across two volumes, 3A and 3B. The scientific data presented in this book concern their lagoon life as much as their marine life, and are therefore of particular interest for both the management of fish stocks and for the conservation of species. Designed to give rapid and comprehensive access to the body of knowledge on Mediterranean lagoonal and estuarine migratory fishes, this volume is for anyone involved in the use, management or protection of natural environments and their populations, including ecobiologists, geographers, engineers, teachers, students and researchers.

Book Synopsis Mesozoic Biotas of Scandinavia and its Arctic Territories by : B.P. Kear
Download or read book Mesozoic Biotas of Scandinavia and its Arctic Territories written by B.P. Kear and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2016-06-02 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scandinavia and its Arctic territories of Svalbard and Greenland represent geographical regions with a long history of Mesozoic palaeontology. However the last few decades have witnessed a surge of new discoveries, especially from the famous Triassic and Late Jurassic Lagerstätten of East Greenland and Spitsbergen in the Svalbard Archipelago, together with the Late Cretaceous strata of southern Sweden and UNESCO World Heritage locality at Stevns Klint in Denmark; the latter recording one of the most complete terminal Mesozoic rock successions known globally. Collectively, these deposits encompass the spectrum of Mesozoic biotic evolution from the explosive radiation of marine faunas after the Permian-Triassic extinction and seminal specialization of amniotes for life in the sea, to the Late Triassic–Jurassic domination of the land by dinosaurs and Cretaceous development of modern terrestrial floras and marine ecosystems. This volume authored by leading experts in the field encapsulates key aspects of the latest research, and will provide a benchmark reference for future investigations into the Scandinavian Mesozoic world.

Book Synopsis Historical Biogeography of Neotropical Freshwater Fishes by : James S. Albert
Download or read book Historical Biogeography of Neotropical Freshwater Fishes written by James S. Albert and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2011-03-08 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fish faunas of continental South and Central America constitute one of the greatest concentrations of aquatic diversity on Earth, consisting of about 10 percent of all living vertebrate species. Historical Biogeography of Neotropical Freshwater Fishes explores the evolutionary origins of this unique ecosystem. The chapters address central themes in the study of tropical biodiversity: why is the Amazon basin home to so many distinct evolutionary lineages? What roles do ecological specialization, speciation, and extinction play in the formation of regional assemblages? How do dispersal barriers contribute to isolation and diversification? Focusing on whole faunas rather than individual taxonomic groups, this volume shows that the area’s high regional diversity is not the result of recent diversification in lowland tropical rainforests. Rather, it is the product of species accumulating over tens of millions of years and across a continental arena.
