Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue damage mechanisms have been investigated using a series of tension fatigue tests on several laminates of boron/aluminum (6061-0). This study focuses on four aspects of the fatigue response. First, in laminates with 0-deg fibers on the outside, an analysis that identifies "shakedown" conditions is shown to predict the stress amplitude below which no fatigue damage accumulates. Second, a simple fatigue damage accumulation model which relates matrix fatigue cracking and the overall laminate properties is described. A model for the saturation damage stage development is presented. Third, data illustrate that identical laminates, tested in directions 90-deg apart (such that one layup has 90-deg outer plies and the other 0-deg), have different fatigue behaviors due to the stacking sequence. The 90-deg plies on the surface develop cracks earlier than predicted by shakedown. An attempt is made to explain this stacking sequence effect. Finally, variable load history effects on the fatigue damage response are investigated by simple tests. These tests reveal that for a given stress ratio the specimen seeks the saturation damage state for the largest stress range to which it is subjected. It also was found that little damage is generated by shifting a given stress range down, whereas significant damage may be created by shifting it upward.

Book excerpt: The fatigue behavior of three boron fiber reinforced aluminum alloys (1200, 6061.T6M, 2024.T4) has been examined in circular bending and the mechanisms which lead to their progressive deterioration studied. In B-1200, the broken fibers are isolated by crack growth in the matrix parallel to the fibers and originating at the fiber failures. In B-6061.T6M, the broken fibers initiate matrix cracks which are normal to the fibers and which pass around intact fibers without producing their failure. In B-2024.T4, a broken fiber can lead to the failure of the neighboring fibers because of load transfer by the matrix; when this failure is not immediate, it can occur because of matrix cyclic work hardening leading to an increase in transferred load. The matrix bridging two fibers subsequently fails in fatigue after their earlier failure.

Book excerpt: The results of strain-controlled axial fatigue tests on boron/aluminum fiber reinforced composite materials are presented in the second of a series of reports detailing such results for a large number of fatigue tests run on boron/epoxy and boron/aluminum. Data from a series of undamaged (virgin) cyclic stress-strain tests at various frequencies and a series of constant strain amplitude fatigue tests at various frequencies is presented and discussed at length. Complete specimen and testing specifications are included. A difinitive relationship between damage and cyclic frequency is established for this material system, as was the case for the boron/epoxy system with substantially different material properties reported in the first report of this series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous research has shown that boron/aluminum can develop significant internal matrix cracking when fatigued. These matrix cracks can result in a 40% secant modulus loss in some laminates even when fatigued below the fatigue limit. The present study shows that the same amount of fatigue damage will develop during stress- or strain-controlled tests. Stacking sequence has little influence on secant modulus loss. The secant modulus loss in unidirectional composites is small, whereas the losses are substantial in laminates containing off-axis plies. This paper presents a simple analysis that predicts unnotched laminate secant modulus loss due to fatigue. The analysis is based upon the elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio of the fiber and matrix, fiber volume fraction, fiber orientations, and the cyclic-hardened yield stress of the matrix material. Excellent agreement was achieved between model predictions and experimental results. With this model, designers can project the material stiffness loss for design load or strain levels and assess the feasibility of its use in stiffness critical parts.

Book excerpt: An experimental program was conducted to study the effects of foreign object damage (FOD) on the bending fatigue characteristics of a composite material, unidirectional boron/aluminum-6061. Fatigue curves were generated for a control group and each of four levels of FOD. The composite was further, characterized by static tensile and nondestructive tests. All tests were carried out at room temperature. A similar damage and fatigue experiment was done for a titanium alloy, Ti-6A1-4V, to provide baseline data with which to compare the composite. It was concluded that the composite suffers a greater percentage reduction in fatigue strength than does Ti-6A1-4V for a given impact energy.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the effects of soft body impact damage on the residual tensile and axial fatigue strength of Boron-6061 Aluminum composite material. Unidirectional B-6061 Al specimens were impacted with room temperature vulcanizing rubber (RTV) spheres in a powder charge gun facility. Specimens were also impacted under five different tensile loads. Residual tensile strength versus impact velocity plots were generated for each prestress level. The composite was further characterized by axial fatigue and nondestructive tests. All tests were carried out at room temperature. A similar damage and residual strength analysis was done for Ti-6Al-4V to provide baseline data against which to compare the composite. It was concluded that Ti-6Al-4V is much more resistant to impact damage than unidirectional B-6061 Al. A fracture mechanic analysis is presented and a fracture mechanics model proposed for unidirectional B-6061 Al impacted specimens.

Book excerpt: This progress report describes the results of research work on the characterization of fracture behavior in boron/aluminum (B/Al) composites. Emphasis has been placed on the correlation between the observed failure modes and the deformation characteristics of center-notched B/Al composties, where particular attention has been given to the proper test procedure and analytical appraoch employed. The purpose of this work is not merely to generate and furnish quantitative data but also to discuss the appropriate methodology to be employed in characterizing a new composite material system. The investigation focused on the deformation characteristics, crack tip damage growth, fracture strength, notch sensitivity, and the associated characterization methods. Extensive acoustic emission information is reported and an attempt is made to distinguish among major failure mechanisms, and to monitor fatigue damage progression. Considerable care must be taken to distinguish between emission due to new damage growth and emission due to friction.

Book excerpt: The investigation was conducted to study the effects of foreign object damage on the residual tensile and tensile fatigue strength of a composite material, unidirectional boron-aluminum-6061. Curves were generated for various levels of tensile prestress during the ballistic impaction which related velocity of impact with the residual tensile strength of the specimens. The composite material was further characterized by tensile fatigue tests, radiography, and photography. A similar damage and fatigue analysis was done for Ti-6Al-4V to provide baseline data with which to compare the composite. All tests were carried out in lab air and at room temperature. It was concluded that for a given level of impact damage B/Al-6061 suffers much greater total loss and percentage loss of residual tensile strength than does Ti-6-4. Also, a fracture mechanics model fits the failure stress versus crack length data for B/Al-6061 resulting from hard-body impact. (Author).

Book excerpt: Boron/aluminum specimens were made with crack-like slits in the center and with various proportions of 0° and ±45° plies. They were fatigue loaded and then fractured to determine their residual strengths. The fatigue loads were generally in the range of 60 to 80% of the static tensile strength of the specimen as determined from a previous study, and the stress ratio was 0.05. For virtually all of the specimens the fatigue loading was continued for 100 000 cycles. The spcimens were radiographed after the fatigue loading to determine the nature of the fatigue damage. A few specimens were sectioned and examined in a scanning electron microscope after being radiographed in order to verify the interpretation of the radiographs and also to get a better insight into the nature of the fatigue damage.

Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive review of its kind on the long-term behaviour of composite materials and structures subjected to time variable mechanical, thermal, and chemical influences, a subject of critical importance to the design, development, and certification of high performance engineering structures. Specific topics examined include damage, damage characterization, and damage mechanics; fatigue testing and evaluation; fatigue behaviour of short and long fibre reinforced polymer and metal matrix materials; viscoelastic and moisture effects; delamination; statistical considerations; the modeling of cumulative damage development; and life prediction. The volume provides an extensive presentation of data, discussions, and comparisons on the behaviour of the major types of material systems in current use, as well as extensive analysis and modeling (including the first presentation of work not found elsewhere). The book will be of special interest to engineers concerned with reliability, maintainability, safety, certification, and damage tolerance; to materials developers concerned with making materials for long-term service, especially under severe loads and environments, and to lecturers, students, and researchers involved in material system design, performance, solid mechanics, fatigue, durability, and composite materials. The scope of the work extends from entry level material to the frontiers of the subject.
