Book excerpt: A literature survey has been done on the computer models that predict fatigue crack growth under variable amplitude loading using Elber's crack closure concept. The PREFFAS, ONERA, and CORPUS crack closure models were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Computer codes were developed for the PREFFAS, ONERA, and CORPUS crack closure models. The models were run under standardized flight simulation loading histories, FALSTAFF and F-27, for which computer codes were also developed. For two different materials, 2024 T3 and 7075 T6, the performance of the models under several variations of flight simulation load histories were analyzed. The predictions were compared with the experimental data supplied by Padmadinata, and acceptable agreement was observed. Predictions using the three models were also compared with those from a simple equivalent constant amplitude load approach which does not account for crack closure and interaction effects. Better performance of the crack closure models was definitely observed. The sensitivities of the models against variations in material parameters were also analyzed.

Book excerpt: This paper presents a new approach for calculating the crack growth under spectrum loading in various different industrial applications. The paper includes (1) An original model based on the crack closure concept. The model combines a cycle by cycle analysis with a conservative cycle counting method similar to the "rain flow" one. A rule that fixes the crack tip opening point at every cycle to take into account the R ratio effect and the retardation effects is developed. (2) A method used for the determination of parameters. The model requires only three parameters that can be obtained with two simple crack growth tests. These two tests give both the values of parameters and the K range where the model is valid. The three parameters depend on the material and the specimen thickness. (3) Some industrial applications--the results show a good correlation between tests and calculations for several different materials. Furthermore, calculation with standard fatigue spectra (TWIST, MINITWIST, FALSTAFF) are given for a range of parameters.

Book excerpt: The objective is to study the effects of constraint on fatigue crack growth under aircraft spectrum loading. A plasticity-induced crack-closure model that accounts for constraint variations during the transition from flat-to-slant crack growth was used to correlate crack-growth rate data under constant-amplitude loading and to calculate crack growth under simulated aircraft spectrum loading. The model was applied to several thin-sheet aluminum alloy materials. Under laboratory air conditions, the transition was shown to be related to the size of the cyclic plastic zone based on the effective stress-intensity factor range for several sheet materials and thicknesses. Results from three-dimensional, elastic-plastic, finite-element analyses of a flat, straight-through crack in a thin-sheet aluminum alloy specimen showed a constraint loss similar to that assumed in the model. Using test data and the closure model, the location of the constraint-loss regime in terms of growth rate and the value of the constraint factor at these rates were determined by trial and error. The model was then used to calculate crack growth under the TWIST spectrum. The calculated results agreed reasonably well with test data. In general, the model predicted shorter crack-growth lives than tests under the TWIST spectrum by about 40 percent. For the TWIST spectrum clipped at Level 3, the calculated lives were within about 20 percent. The results demonstrated that constraint variations, especially for thin-sheet alloys, should be accounted for to predict crack growth under typical aircraft spectra. Newman, J. Book excerpt: The life prediction of aerospace structures subjected to service loading conditions can be complex and expensive. Fortunately, many flight-by- flight loadings can be analyzed as constant amplitude loading if the variability in crack growth rate is low. A test program was designed such that the stress intensity factor (Kmax) was held constant by uniformly reducing the load as the fatigue crack grew. With a constant Kmax, the crack growth rate remains constant throughout the life of the test. The baseline fatigue crack growth rate variability was established for the 7075-T6 center-cracked panels under a flight-by-flight load history. The effect of introducing overloads to the baseline flight history on the crack growth rate variability was reported. The results indicate that the delay region for the applied 114% overloads was predicted by Irwin's plastic zone model and was equal to 0.0382 inches which was equal to 225 flights. The delay behavior was consistent for the several overload conditions that were studied. When the occurrence of overload increased, the fatigue crack growth decreased. The standard error of estimate remained relatively constant, suggesting that a block approach to life prediction is feasible for flight-by-flight load history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue of structures and materials covers a wide scope of different topics. The purpose of the present book is to explain these topics, to indicate how they can be analyzed, and how this can contribute to the designing of fatigue resistant structures and to prevent structural fatigue problems in service. Chapter 1 gives a general survey of the topic with brief comments on the signi?cance of the aspects involved. This serves as a kind of a program for the following chapters. The central issues in this book are predictions of fatigue properties and designing against fatigue. These objectives cannot be realized without a physical and mechanical understanding of all relevant conditions. In Chapter 2 the book starts with basic concepts of what happens in the material of a structure under cyclic loads. It illustrates the large number of variables which can affect fatigue properties and it provides the essential background knowledge for subsequent chapters. Different subjects are presented in the following main parts: • Basic chapters on fatigue properties and predictions (Chapters 2–8) • Load spectra and fatigue under variable-amplitude loading (Chapters 9–11) • Fatigue tests and scatter (Chapters 12 and 13) • Special fatigue conditions (Chapters 14–17) • Fatigue of joints and structures (Chapters 18–20) • Fiber-metal laminates (Chapter 21) Each chapter presents a discussion of a speci?c subject.

Book excerpt: Experiments on metallic materials have shown that fatigue cracks remain closed during part of the load cycle under constant- and variable-amplitude loading. These experiments have shown that crack closure is a significant factor in causing load-interaction effects (retardation and acceleration) on crack growth rates under variable-amplitude loading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A two-component crack growth model has been developed to treat fatigue crack growth under constant and variable amplitude loading. The model is based on a concept introduced by Paris which relates the crack growth to the instantaneous plastic zone size ahead of the crack-tip. This concept was applied to describe crack growth in the presence of cyclic and primary plastic flow. The model was formulated on an incremental basis in which a particular component of the model is integrated about a discrete portion of the load excursion. The model includes the effects of cyclic and monotonic crack growths and crack closure. The results for fatigue crack growth data reported in the literature for multiple overload and severe flight sequences are compared with the model predictions. The model was shown to describe accelerated crack growth behavior typically observed during these sequences. Acceleration effects occur in the presence of primary plastic flow which is related to the ductile tearing mechanism and is not dependent upon crack closure or other load-history effects. Moreover, the model describes the phenomenological variation of the acceleration effects over such sequences. The predicted crack growth agrees well with the experimental data.
