Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the currently available methods for predicting fatigue crack growth in structures do not consider effects due to mixed-mode loading. This is partly due to the limited information available concerning the fatigue crack growth under mixed mode loading. Previous investigations of mixed mode effects on fatigue crack growth have shown that under combined opening and in-plane shear loading, the cracks turn abruptly so that the in-plane shear mode is eliminated. Very little data is generated before the crack curvature eliminates the mixed-mode loading. The changing orientation of the crack during the test makes analysis of the problem difficult and may cloud the intrinsic fatigue crack growth rate behavior under mixed-mode loading. Situations can exist in engineering structures in which cracks may grow in a self-similar manner, even under the influence of mixed-mode loading. Examples of such situations are radial cracks in bearing rates and transverse cracks in rotating shafts under shear and bending loads. The cracks may not change orientation because the in-plane shear component is fully reversed. It is necessary to understand the effects of mixed mode loading on fatigue crack growth in order to properly predict the behavior of these components. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth behavior of high-strength Ladish D6AC steel was examined under various conditions of frequency, environment, temperature, stress ratio, and stress intensity history. Materials with fracture toughness ranging from 50 to 100 ksi/sq. in., but with the same yield strength of 220 ksi, were examined. Variations in fracture thoughness do not have a strong effect on crack growth rate at stress intensity levels within the log-linear portion of the crack growth curves. Different environments, such as dry air, laboratory air, and distilled water, were found to produce different fatigue crack growth behavior at 1 Hz but not at 10 Hz loading frequency. The lowest crack growth rate occurred in dry air, while the aggressive environment of distilled water affected the crack growth rate more severly at lower stress intensity levels. The effects of temperature over the range from -40 to 175F are a uniform shift of the growth curve to low crack growth rates and a lowering of the stress intensity level for the onset of rapid fatigue crack propagation. Suppression of crack growth rate following high prior stress cycles is the most significant effect of stress history. This effect cannot be explained in terms of the relative plastic zone sizes alone. (Author).

Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth rates (da/dN) as a function of applied stress intensity amplitude (delta K) were determined for four high strength steels (HP 9-4-.45, 18% Ni marage 250, D6Ac, AISI 4340) in air at 10 percent and at 80 percent relative humidities (R.H.). All four steels demonstrated sensitivity to high humidity with crack growth rates in 80 percent R.H. air being one and one-half to two times as high as in 10 percent R.H. air. Overall crack growth rates of three steels, HP 9-4-.45, 18% Ni marage 250, and D6Ac, were similar, while rates for AISI 4340 were uniformly higher than those of the other three steels. (Author).

Book excerpt: What can be added to the fracture mechanics of metal fatigue that has not already been said since the 1900s? From the view point of the material and structure engineer, there are many aspects of failure by fatigue that are in need of attention, particularly when the size and time of the working components are changed by orders of magnitude from those considered by st traditional means. The 21 century marks an era of technology transition where structures are made larger and devices are made smaller, rendering the method of destructive testing unpractical. While health monitoring entered the field of science and engineering, the practitioners are discovering that the correlation between the signal and the location of interest depends on a priori knowledge of where failure may initiate. This information is not easy to find because the integrity of the physical system will change with time. Required is software that can self-adjust in time according to the monitored data. In this connection, effective application of health monitoring can use a predictive model of fatigue crack growth. Earlier fatigue crack growth models assumed functional dependence on the maximum stress and the size of the pre-existing crack or defect. Various possibilities were examined in the hope that the data could be grouped such that linear interpolation would apply.

Book excerpt: Local approaches to fatigue assessment are used to predict the structural durability of welded joints, to optimise their design and to evaluate unforeseen joint failures. This standard work provides a systematic survey of the principles and practical applications of the various methods. It covers the hot spot structural stress approach to fatigue in general, the notch stress and notch strain approach to crack initiation and the fracture mechanics approach to crack propagation. Seam-welded and spot-welded joints in structural steels and aluminium alloys are also considered. This completely reworked second edition takes into account the tremendous progress in understanding and applying local approaches which has been achieved in the last decade. It is a standard reference for designers, structural analysts and testing engineers who are responsible for the fatigue-resistant in-service behaviour of welded structures. Book excerpt: The importance of the nanoscale effects has been recognized in materials research for over fifty years, but it is only recently that advanced characterization and fabrication methods are enabling scientists to build structures atom-by-atom or molecule-by molecule. The understanding and control of the nanostructure has been, to a large extent, made possible by new atomistic analysis and characterization methods pioneered by transmission electron microscopy. Nano and Microstructural Design of Advanced Materials focuses on the effective use of such advanced analysis and characterization techniques in the design of materials. Teaches effective use of advanced analysis and characterization methods at an atomistic level Contains many supporting examples of materials in which such design concepts have been successfully applied

Book excerpt: Fatigue-crack growth is a potential failure mechanism that can be strongly influenced by a salt-water environment. This paper discusses fatigue-crack-propagation studies performed on three high-strength structural steels: 9Ni-4Co-0.25C, 12Ni 180-grade maraging, and 18Ni 200-grade maraging. Each steel underwent a program of fatigue cycling in two environments, a "dry" environment consisting of ambient room air and a "wet" environment consisting of 3.5 percent NaCl salt water. Relationships for fatigue-crack-growth rates as a function of the fracture mechanics stress-intensity factor (K) were obtained experimentally for each steel in both environments. The engineering significance of these relationships is presented in terms of stress levels and flaw sizes relevant to the steels under investigation. The results of this work indicate that, in an air environment, the fatigue-crack-growth rate correlates with the stress-intensity-factor range according to the power-law relationship, da/dN = C (?K)m. Fatigue-crack growth in each of the steels was accelerated by the salt-water environment. However, the environmental response varied significantly, depending upon the material and the ?K level. The lower-toughness steel was less affected by environment, and environmental effects in all the steels diminished with increasing ?K levels. No correlation was observed between fatigue-crack-growth behavior in the salt-water environment and the stress-corrosion-cracking parameter (K Iscc) obtained on the same materials.

Book excerpt: Recent studies in a wide variety of steels, of yield strengths ranging from 290 to 1740 MPa, have indicated that environmental influences on corrosion fatigue crack propagation at near-threshold levels (growth rates below approx. 10/sup -6/ mm/cycle), may be markedly different from those at higher growth rates. In this paper, the effect of such environments, specifically dry gaseous hydrogen and moist room air, on near-threshold cyclic crack growth is reviewed and comparisons made between behavior in high and lower strength steels. It is shown that, in lower strength steels (yield strength less than or equal to 700 MPa), near-threshold growth rates in dry hydrogen exceed those in moist air by up to two orders of magnitude at low load ratios only, whereas for steels of strength levels above approx. 700 MPa, the presence of hydrogen results in lower near-threshold growth rates compared to moist air regardless of load ratio. Such behavior is rationalized in terms of the competing effects of hydrogen embrittlement and oxide-induced crack closure mechanisms.
