Book excerpt: Variable amplitude loading of components or structures can result in failures which occur much sooner than would be predicted by commonly used life prediction models, utilizing constant amplitude loading. The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of periodic overloads on fatigue behavior of smooth specimens made from five grades of steel and one grade of aluminum. This history included a periodic fully-reversed overload cycle followed by smaller cycles in the presence of a mean stress. Life predictions were performed for each test by implementing the Linear Damage Rule along with the strain-life equation or Smith-Watson-Topper (SWT) mean stress parameter. Life predictions were then compared to experimental results. Life predictions with the SWT parameter showed an increase in accuracy versus the strain-life method but there still remained predictions that were unaffected by the use of this parameter. Presence of periodic overloads in a load history resulted in increased damage for small cycles not only at strain levels above the fatigue limit, but also in damage for cycles below the fatigue limit. Additional tests were performed in order to identify the amount of damage resulting from individual aspects of the load history. These aspects included small cycles in the presence of mean stress without overloads, fully-reversed small cycles with overloads, as well as variations in the number of small cycles per load block. Comparison of these different aspects showed that in some cases the application of mean stress in the periodic overload history resulted in little to no additional small cycle damage. Anisotropy resulting from sulfide inclusions was examined by applying the periodic overload history to three sets of steel 4140 containing three different levels of sulfur content (0.004%, 0.012%, and 0.077%). The specimens were machined so that the axis of the specimen was transverse to the rolling direction of the material. Results of the testing showed that, although the sulfur content has a drastic effect on fully-reversed constant amplitude fatigue lives, there is little noticeable different between the materials with different levels of sulfur in the presence of periodic overloads.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to serve as core text or handy reference on two key areas of metallic materials: (i) mechanical behavior and properties evaluated by mechanical testing; and (ii) different types of metal working or forming operations to produce useful shapes. The book consists of 16 chapters which are divided into two parts. The first part contains nine chapters which describe tension (including elastic stress – strain relation, relevant theory of plasticity, and strengthening methods), compression, hardness, bending, torsion – pure shear, impact loading, creep and stress rupture, fatigue, and fracture. The second part is composed of seven chapters and covers fundamentals of mechanical working, forging, rolling, extrusion, drawing of flat strip, round bar, and tube, deep drawing, and high-energy rate forming. The book comprises an exhaustive description of mechanical properties evaluated by testing of metals and metal working in sufficient depth and with reasonably wide coverage. The book is written in an easy-to-understand manner and includes many solved problems. More than 150 numerical problems and many multiple choice questions as exercise along with their answers have also been provided. The mathematical analyses are well elaborated without skipping any intermediate steps. Slab method of analysis or free-body equilibrium approach is used for the analytical treatment of mechanical working processes. For hot working processes, different frictional conditions (sliding, sticking and mixed sticking–sliding) have been considered to estimate the deformation loads. In addition to the slab method of analysis, this book also contains slip-line field theory, its application to the static system, and the steady state motion, Further, this book includes upper-bound theorem, and upper-bound solutions for indentation, compression, extrusion and strip drawing. The book can be used to teach graduate and undergraduate courses offered to students of mechanical, aerospace, production, manufacturing and metallurgical engineering disciplines. The book can also be used for metallurgists and practicing engineers in industry and development courses in the metallurgy and metallic manufacturing industries.

Book excerpt: This work reports on baseline fatigue and cumulative fangue damage results of mild steel under cyclic strain control All cumulative damage tests were conducted with a step loading in a decreasing order, from a high strain amplitude of 0.4 or 0.3% to a lower one of 0.2%. Different mean strain values of -0.2, 0, and 0.2% were applied in each strain amplitude level. Seven combinations of strain amplitude and mean strain were investigated. It was observed that cyclic softening in the second level was significantly stabilized by the presence of the first level, which accounts for approximately 20% of the total fatigue life. Mean stress relaxation in the second level depended upon the loading in the first level and was similar to that for single-level loading under certain strain amplitudes and mean strains. The damage summations in terms of cycle ratio (Miner's damage sum), both with and without mean strain correction, were calculated and discussed. For all of the cases investigated, the average damage summations were found to be in the range of 0.94 to 1.28. The degree of approximation and the deviation of each individual test from unity depends on whether mean strain correction was made. The competing effects of mean stresses induced and plastic deformation tended to overshadow the more classical loading sequence effects in terms of the damage summation. Fatigue damage accumulation has also been analyzed using Continuum Damage Mechanics modeling. The sources of the deviation of damage summation from unity and the nonlinear accumulation of damage are discussed.

Book excerpt: Mean-stress effects on fatigue life are critical in isothermal and thermomechanically loaded materials and composites. Unfortunately, existing mean-stress life-prediction methods do not incorporate physical fatigue damage mechanisms. An objective is to examine the relation between mean-stress induced damage (as measured by acoustic emission) and existing life-prediction methods. Acoustic emission instrumentation has indicated that, as with static yielding, fatigue damage results from dislocation buildup and motion until dislocation saturation is reached, after which void formation and coalescence predominate. Correlation of damage processes with similar mechanisms under monotonic loading led to a reinterpretation of Goodman diagrams for 40 alloys and a modification of Morrow's formulation for life prediction under mean stresses. Further testing, using acoustic emission to monitor dislocation dynamics, can generate data for developing a more general model for fatigue under mean stress. This book was released on 2016 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the models used for taking into account the influence of mean stress on fatigue life work on the basis of the correction of stress amplitudes of particular loading cycles. This can be done directly on the amplitudes or through the modification of the reference S-N curve. The mentioned procedure is also applicable for variable amplitude loading where, after rainflow cycle counting, all loading cycles described by amplitude and mean-stress value are designated. Mean-stress correction can be difficult to apply in stochastic fatigue-damage accumulation, also called the spectral method, where the load and the stress level is defined in the frequency domain using the appropriate power spectral density (PSD) function. The PSD function by itself does not give information to the user about the level of mean stress and only provides us with some statistical information of the fluctuating part of the random loading processes. The aim of the paper is to present how we can perform the mean-stress effect correction directly on a PSD function of stress using well-known models, such as proposed by Gerber, Goodman, Soderberg, or Morrow. The correction can be performed depending on the frequency component, which is a significant advantage of the presented method. The theoretical elaborations were used to develop a computer simulation used to compare the frequency-domain with the time-domain computation path. To show the effectiveness of the presented method, fatigue life has been estimated and compared with experimental fatigue test results for S355JR steel.
