Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Joseph Gabriel Doyle was born in Dalkey, a suburb of Dublin, in Ireland on March 3, 1873. He was the youngest of seven children, four boys and three girls, out of which two boys became Jesuits, another died a few days before his priestly ordination and one of the three girls became a Sister of Mercy: four vocations out of seven children. He entered the Jesuit Novitiate at the age of 18 after reading St. Alphonsus' book "Instructions and Consideration on the Religious State". Soon after his ordination in 1907, his superiors appointed him on the mission staff for five years. From 1908 to 1915, he gave no less than 152 missions and retreats. His fame as preacher, confessor and spiritual director spread wide and far, and he had a special gift to hunt out the most hardened and neglected sinners and to bring them back with him to the church for confession.

Book excerpt: Irish military chaplain Fr. Willie Doyle, S.J., died in action during the Battle of Passchendaele on August 16, 1917, having been hit by a German shell while rushing to the aid of wounded soldiers trapped in No Man's Land. In To Raise the Fallen, Patrick Kenny introduces readers to this remarkable man, whose faith, heroic courage and generosity in the trenches of World War I continue to inspire Christians and non-Christians alike. To Raise the Fallen includes a selection of Willie Doyle's rich and vivid letters from the front, along with diary entries, prayers, spiritual writings and extracts from the pamphlets that made him a publishing sensation across Europe in the early years of the twentieth century. Fr. Doyle's compassion, cheerfulness and humility, alongside his great valor in wartime, are a testament to his commitment to Christ. His final act of bravery epitomizes Christ's words that there "is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends". Those who knew Fr. Doyle testified to his heroic virtue. They witnessed his fearlessness in the face of enemy fire as he rescued the wounded, anointed the dying and buried the dead. His letters home reveal both his deep faith and his great humor, even in the face of unspeakable horrors. His daily conquest of himself in little things over many years prepared him for his selfless service on the battlefield.

It is also a profile in the abuse of power, of a Church that put safeguarding its own reputation and money ahead of protecting its most vulnerable members from predator priests.

Book excerpt: Father William Doyle was an exceptional Jesuit priest, whose scholarly writings and promise were tragically cut short by his death while serving in World War One. Born in Melrose at Dalkey, County Dublin, Doyle expressed an interest in religious service and soldiering from a young age. Born in modest circumstances to a large family, William was the youngest of seven children. Frail and prone to illness in youth, the lad overcame fragility of health and made his decision to enter the Jesuit ministry. From his earliest years in study of the Bible, Doyle demonstrated an immense aptitude for the holy scriptures and the principles of the Lord Jesus. His priesthood was marked by frequent writings on Christian subjects - much of this was published during his life, while other poignant notes were compiled into collections. All display clear, commonsense spiritual advice, as well as excursions to wit and liveliness that serve to make Father Doyle's counsel all the more valuable. Father Doyle's boyhood dream of becoming a soldier was answered when, in 1914, war broke out in Europe. He enthusiastically enlisted as a chaplain in the British Army, and was promptly sent to the Western Front in France, where he bore witness to the carnage of trench warfare. By all accounts Doyle's strength of spirit remained; he was popular in his unit, and saved several of his comrade's lives - many considered Doyle to have divine protection. Yet his death was sudden; an exploding shell ended his life, at the age of only forty-four.
