Book excerpt: Erin Shanley, a hospice nurse, turns amateur sleuth when she realizes that some of her patients are being swindled out of their life savings by the new "psychic" fortunetellers in Briar's Point. She confides in her neighbor, Detective Tyler Shaw, whom she grew up alongside and considers her best friend. Tough guy Ty has been in love with Erin since their disastrous first attempt at a romantic relationship when they were teenagers. Erin has been skittish about love since she discovered her father was cheating on her mother--and Ty is so much like her father. How can she risk loving a reckless, restless adventurer when her mother's loyalty to a man like that brought her so much pain? But when Erin's bumbling sleuthing attempts arouse someone's wrath, she realizes her heart isn't the only thing in danger.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Death is painful and fearful to humans. People fear death. Nobody feels comfortable talking about death. Death is unavoidable.Only God has control over death. When a villager dies, relatives and neighbors come to mourn and pray for the dead person; hoping that prayers will gain the dead relative entry into the gates of Heaven. That is Okay for those who believe in life after death.Even after burying our dead, we never forget them; instead we continue to pray for them on daily basis, we never disconnect our selves from them by saying: TILL WE MEET AGAIN! After this life, then what? Do you really believe that you are a being worthy living? If yes, why would you live and in the end you are nothing? Do you think that God did create you in vain? You be born, you grow and mature to die and vanish into oblivion? Is our God that simple? Do you really believe in God being simple? God is not simple; He created you with a purpose. The purpose was for you to know Him, to love Him, to praise Him and ultimately you go back to Him after death on leaving this world of struggle against the temptations of Satan. On the other hand, there those who do not know what happens when one dies and leaves this world. Others believe that the dead people become devils after death. Christians believe that dead people go back to their Creator, to account for their lives' actions- whether good or bad. This book is meant to encourage those who do good to continue doing good and even do better in their lives, so as to receive God's reward in heaven when they die and leave this world. The story is a narration of series of events encountered by one person, who was very sick and by God's grace was spared death to tell this story for the people to believe or disbelief. After sickness, the narrator lived about 38 years and died in April 2003 about ten years before the first publication of this book. You are encouraged to read this story to get insights of what happens to the souls, where they go or are thought to go and how they get treated when they leave their world after death. It is very interesting, you are encouraged to read and read. The story is long and volume II will follow soon. The book is an encouragement and not a discouragement in life.We know, people do not like talking about death, but there it is and it is part of us. Be blessed and be brave to continue reading to be encouraged to continue doing the best you can while you are in this world of struggle against the devil.Author: Tarcisio Francis Baimaana Gichunge

The famous Orthodox French theologian Jean-Claude Larchet tried to present in as much detail as possible the Orthodox doctrine of death and resurrection and to make due clarifications to the controversial issues discussed with representatives of other Christian denominations (about purgatory, prayer for the dead and for the veneration of saints) or in the bosom of Russian theology itself (about apocatastasis or aerial ordeals).

Book excerpt: In De instauranda Aethiopum salute (1627)--the earliest known book-length study of African slavery in the colonial Americas--Jesuit priest Alonso de Sandoval described dozens of African ethnicities, their languages, and their beliefs, and provided an exposé of the abuse of slaves in the Americas. This collection of previously untranslated selections from Sandoval's book is an invaluable resource for understanding the history of the African diaspora, slavery in colonial Latin America, and the role of Christianity in the formation of the Spanish Empire; it also provides insights into early modern European concepts of race. A general Introduction and headnotes to each selection provide cultural, historical, and religious context; copious footnotes identify terms and references that may be unfamiliar to modern readers. A map and an index are also provided.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Search of Soul explores the meaning of “soul” in sacred and profane incarnations, from its biblical origins to its central place in the rich traditions of black and Latin history. Surveying the work of writers, artists, poets, musicians, philosophers and theologians, Alejandro Nava shows how their understandings of the “soul” revolve around narratives of justice, liberation, and spiritual redemption. He contends that biblical traditions and hip-hop emerged out of experiences of dispossession and oppression. Whether born in the ghettos of America or of the Roman Empire, hip-hop and Christianity have endured by giving voice to the persecuted. This book offers a view of soul in living color, as a breathing, suffering, dreaming thing.

Book excerpt: A work that is still up-to-date, What is Spiritism? is useful for adherents of the Spiritist Doctrine as well as for those who want to understand the nature of Spiritism and its fundamental points. Kardec’s logic and common sense are obvious in this book as he confounds Spiritism’s detractors while answering the questions of those who believe in and aspire to a superior life. The book is divided into three chapters. The first is composed of dialogues between Kardec and a critic, a skeptic and a priest, providing answers to those who do not understand the basic principles of Spiritism. It also presents appropriate refutations to its opponents. The second chapter presents practical and experimental aspects of the science and is a kind of summary of The Mediums’ Book. The third chapter is a short synthesis of The Spirits’ Book, with solutions to psychological, moral and philosophical problems according to the Spiritist Doctrine. In addition, the book is prefaced with an abridged version of Henri Sausse’s biography of Allan Kardec.

Book excerpt: This volume examines mystical experiences as portrayed in various ways by “authors” such as philosophers, mystics, psychoanalysts, writers, and peasant women. These “mystical authors” have, throughout the ages, attempted to convey the unsayable through writings, paintings, or oral stories. The immediate experience of God is the primary source and ultimate goal of these mystical expressions. This experience is essentially ineffable, yet all mystical authors, either consciously or unconsciously, feel an urge to convey what they have undergone in the moments of rapture. At the same time they are in the role of intermediaries: the goal of their self-expression – either written, painted or oral – is to make others somehow understand or feel what they have experienced, and to lead others toward the spiritual goal of human life. This volume studies the mystical experiences and the way they have been described or portrayed in West-European culture, from Antiquity to the present, from an interdisciplinary perspective, and approaches the concept of “immediate experience” in various ways.
