Book excerpt: The novel DEADLY PARADISE tells about obsessive love, hatred and the power struggle between the wealthy and powerful Blue Creek Condominium president, Mr. Robert Howards, and the simple, but attractive, Russian immigrant caretaker, Nina. The book is set in a first class high-rise building in Pittsburgh, PA. It is the backdrop for the gripping and frantic story of Rob and Nina's relationship. Intertwined, as well, are the stories of the staff and residents who live in the building. The novel explores many human emotions as well as a variety of characters. The adventures in the narrative include: stories of immigrant life, a struggle with cancer, pure love as contrasted with horrible sadistic love, abuse and harassment. The main dramaturgic line is the deep psychological tragedy and sufferings of a tyrannical man, who was a dictator ruling the kingdom of slaves. Rob finds his only true love in a woman from another culture, a different social class and a completely opposite character. But she keeps him at arms length and unconsciously completely ruined his kingdom which everyone hates and scares. Nina doesn't rebel openly against the oppressive atmosphere, but seeks freedom and democracy in her own way, by living and enjoying her life and singing. She continues to be full of love for the whole world. In this way she wins people's affection and undermined Rob's power in the company. The story culminates when Rob shot Nina in the triumphal hour of her victory.

Book excerpt: One of the first great mysteries of civilization is the story of the creation of the world in the Bible. The Tree of Life planted in the Garden of Eden may be more than just a myth. And if so, the country that possesses it could harness the power of eternity and be the undefeated champion of the world. To this end, a small group that includes some of the best scientists of the age start an expedition to Iraq in search of the Forbidden Garden. But will they ever return? The path that leads to the entrance to paradise has been called The Valley of the Shadow of Death, and not without reason. It is said to be guarded by a host of demons under the command of the ancient Egyptian priest Siptelah, who sold his own soul in exchange for his power. Mystery of the Past is the first book of the exciting trilogy, Paradise. Already a bestseller in Russia, it has fascinated hundreds of thousands of readers around the world. Now released for the first time in English, Christians and non-Christians can enjoy the thrilling opening of this powerful series.

Book excerpt: Paradise Lost remains as challenging and relevant today as it was in the turbulent intellectual and political environment in which it was written. This edition aims to bring the poem as fully alive to a modern reader as it would have been to Milton's contemporaries. It provides a newly edited text of the 1674 edition of the poem--the last of Milton's lifetime--with carefully modernized spelling and punctuation. Marginal glosses define unfamiliar words, and extensive annotations at the foot of the page clarify Milton's syntax and poetics, and explore the range of literary, biblical, and political allusions that point to his major concerns. David Kastan's lively Introduction considers the central interpretative issues raised by the poem, demonstrating how thoroughly it engaged the most vital--and contested--issues of Milton's time, and which reveal themselves as no less vital, and perhaps no less contested, today. The edition also includes an essay on the text, a chronology of major events in Milton's life, and a selected bibliography, as well as the first known biography of Milton, written by Edward Phillips in 1694.

Book excerpt: Milton's Paradise Lost is one of the great works of literature, of any time and in any language. Marked by Milton's characteristic erudition it is a work epic both in scale and, notoriously, in ambition. For nearly 350 years it has held generation upon generation of scholars, students and readers in rapt attention and its profound influence can be seen in almost every corner of Western culture. First published in 1968, with John Carey's Complete Shorter Poems, Alastair Fowler's Paradise Lost is widely acknowledged to be the most authoritative edition of this compelling work. An unprecedented amount of detailed annotation accompanies the full text of the first (1667) edition, providing a wealth of contextual information to enrich and enhance the reader's experience. Notes on composition and context are combined with a clear explication of the multitude allusions Milton called to the poem's aid. The notes also summarise and illuminate the vast body of critical attention the poem has attracted, synthesizing the ancient and the modern to provide a comprehensive account both of the poem's development and its reception. Meanwhile, Alastair Fowler's invigorating introduction surveys the whole poem and looks in detail at such matters as Milton's theology, metrical structure and, most valuably, his complex and imaginary astronomy. The result is an enduring landmark in the field of Milton scholarship and an invaluable guide for readers of all levels.
