Book excerpt: "I killed a man, turned him to dust, with nothing more than a touch of my hand." I don’t know how to stop causing pain… or worse. I can’t figure out what it is I do. My effect on others appears random. Very random. I’m desperate to find someone with whom I can confide. Someone to help me understand what I am and what I do. But my foster family isn’t open to hearing my personal issues. And my birth family… that’s another complicated and crazy story… Six years ago, my dad disappeared and my mom started using different names for us. Even worse, everyone I ever knew forgot who I was. No one seems to remember. No one, but me. And now, my real mom is ill – my fault, my touch – and in need of a full-time caregiver. I know my dad is still out there somewhere. I can feel him in the current that runs through my veins. When a girl from my past approaches and tells me she not only remembers me, but that we’re family – my dad’s family – I’m leery. But I’m willing to do anything to find my dad. And if that means working with “supposed” family, so be it. I never expected the search to bring so much supernatural activity into my life. Dark Elements clearly don’t want my father found. But I will do everything I can to bring him home without becoming a victim of evil magic or vampires. This young adult, paranormal coming-of-age adventure, about a New Orleans, magical bloodline family is ideal for fans of The Bane Chronicles and The Originals. Book excerpt: Fighting is Tack's way of life, but trust is a difficult concept when she's programmed to expect betrayal. With new items and skills, Tack continues to battle against the Glitch, protecting the ones around her, including those in other games, and must allow others to fight with her, including new allies from Norse and Greek mythology. Rebelling against her typical intuition and traits, Tack trusts in what she's told. But when she is confronted with conflicting information regarding the Glitch, she is forced to choose who she trusts enough to fight with. If the only people who understand the Game aren't giving straight answers, who can Tack trust to help her save the world? ------ Virtual reality has become the only way of life, and no one can tell the difference between what is virtual and what is real. So when a glitch began destroying Tack's reality, she stood up to save it. However, understanding that what you perceive as the real world is actually virtual is outside Tack's realm of expertise. "Friendships help bridge trust issues," is what Olivia would say. Unfortunately, as the truth trickles down to Tack about the Glitch, it's hard to determine who is telling the truth, and even harder to cross suspects off her list. As conflicting information is provided, Tack must decide who to trust. The only ones who can help her are those with hidden agendas. With Tack's life on the line, which one of her allies will protect her? PRAISE & REVIEWS "I was fully enthralled from the first page." -Early Reader Review "The most fun I've had reading a book in a years. Book excerpt: The power I have over death–to connect our world with the Otherworld–isn’t a gift like I was led to believe. It’s a curse. I still don’t know how my unique “gift” as a blood witch works and have no idea how to protect myself. Which is exactly what I need to do when I step outside of my family’s magically protected home and find myself a magnet for the dead. Now with only a clue from Gram-Gram to go on, I’m on a mission to find a man I’ve never met and who no one has seen in ages: my Grandpa. That is, if the French Quarter witches and vampires don’t stop me. Turns out they don’t want to, though. Not when I could inadvertently lead them to the key they need to control the city. I can’t do this alone, but only the dead can help me piece together these clues. Worse? The only soul among them who holds the answer to my search is a dark and unholy spirit, equally bent on destroying me. This fast-paced, action-packed, young adult, paranormal coming-of-age adventure, about a New Orleans, magical bloodline family is ideal for fans of The Originals and Charmed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a degree of bliss too intense for elation. This little-known novella from one of the masters of the form is so unusual for Joseph Conrad's work in several respects, although not in its exotic maritime setting or its even more exotic prose—it is unusual in that it is one of his very few works to feature a woman as a leading character, and to take the form of a romance. Still, it's a Conradian romance: a sweeping saga set in the Indian Ocean basin, against a turbulent background of barely suppressed hostilities between Dutch and British merchant navies, told by one of Conrad's classically detached narrators. In the end, the unique perspective of the sharply etched character of Freya is one of Conrad's most piercing studies of how the lust for power can drive men to greatness—or its opposite. The Art of The Novella Series Too short to be a novel, too long to be a short story, the novella is generally unrecognized by academics and publishers. Nonetheless, it is a form beloved and practiced by literature's greatest writers. In the Art Of The Novella series, Melville House celebrates this renegade art form and its practitioners with titles that are, in many instances, presented in book form for the first time.

Book excerpt: The Prophecy spoke of another thirteen, to destroy or create the future. They were named the Damned Thirteen. He is one of thirteen, he is Hareem, he is Markus. He is alone. His Matriarch torn apart before him, deserted, abandoned, he has no-one. He cannot reconnect with humanity, or for that matter his own kind. He is lost, adrift amongst the detritus of the world, with no reason to live. Yet a reason presents itself in the form of Walker. He is one of thirteen, he is Walker, his humanity stolen from him, restrained from his family by his own cravings, the beast within him struggling to take control, to slake it's thirst for blood and unleash devastation. Together as brothers, they must find redemption; they must find a purpose where atonement is possible. But war is a difficult place to gain retribution. One of Thirteen is the fifth volume in the gripping Crimson Lore saga, a further tale dreamt up by the extraordinary imagination of P D Ingledew, of blood, loss and retribution.

Book excerpt: This book establishes the profound significance of MGM's 1940 film The Mortal Storm, the first major Hollywood production to depict the plight of Jews in Germany before the Holocaust. Based on Phyllis Bottome's best seller, also titled The Mortal Storm, the film was made amidst the bitter debate that occurred between 1938 and 1941 over whether the United States should involve itself in another European war or remain an isolationist country, as Charles Lindbergh among others urged. In 1941, the film triggered the first hostile Congressional investigation of Hollywood where the studios were accused of allegedly propagandizing for war. Lindbergh had secretly urged the Hollywood hearings, inspired by his own growing antisemitism, as his unpublished diary reveals. Hollywood studios, in turn, regarded the growing European crisis with ambivalence. They feared being accused in a film like The Mortal Storm of using the movies to represent the fate of Europe's imperiled Jews. Louis B. Mayer, the head of MGM, insisted the word “Jew” be removed from the film and “non-Aryan” be used instead, hoping to confuse American audiences about the film's real intent. Jimmy Stewart, who starred in the film, took it on the road to urge American aid to Britain, while Lindbergh prepared his own campaign to denounce American Jews for luring the country into war. The book reveals how closely Hollywood and politics were entwined on the eve of war. It also reveals how closely the plight of Europe's Jews and American antisemitism were entwined at the same time.

Nine essays, by established and emerging scholars, deal with early and classic stories as well as the relatively neglected works of Conrad’s later career. The essays explore in depth the historical and publishing contexts of individual stories and provide insights into Conrad’s practice as a writer of short fiction. These new readings, based on contemporary theoretical and interpretive perspectives, will appeal not only to specialists of literary Modernism but also to the advanced student and the general reader.
