Book excerpt: In this report, we outline the progress achieved in two distinct under the DOE-sponsored cross section project: the initial results obtained from the pulsed 14 MeV neutron facility, and a cooperative effort with Argonne National Laboratory in the measurement of fast neutron cross sections in yttrium. In the 14 MeV neutron laboratory, this year has seen the maturation of the project into one in which initial scattering measurements are now underway. We have improved the accelerator and ion source in several significant ways, so that neutron intensities have now been proven to be adequate for our series of elastic scattering angular distribution measurements outlined in our initial proposal of two years ago. We have successfully tested all components of the time-of-flight spectrometer and recorded initial neutron spectra from the ring targets that we have obtained for our first angular distribution measurements. Examples of the time-of-flight spectra that have been obtained are given later in this report. At the present time, the accelerator is operating with the highest degree of reliability that we have experienced since installing the pulsing system. Improvements made over the past year have not only increased the available neutron intensity, but also increased our capability to deal with inevitable component failures that require repair or replacement. The measurements carried out in conjunction with Argonne have contributed significantly to the available database on fast neutron interactions in yttrium. Results indicate that the cross section for the 89 Y(n, p)89Sr reaction is substantially higher than represented in ENDF/B-VI.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The time-of-flight technique was used with the ring scattering geometry in a laboratory with low neutron scattering background to measure the angular distributions of the cross sections for elastic and inelastic scattering of 14 MeV neutrons in natural chromium, iron, nickel, and niobium. Specifically for inelastic scattering included were: the 1.43 MeV and 4.56 MeV levels of 52Cr, the 0.85 MeV level, and (2.94-3.12) MeV and (4.46-4.51) MeV level groups of 56Fe, the 1.33 MeV level of 6°Ni combined with the 1.45 MeV level of 58Ni, and the 4.48 MeV level of 58Ni. Pulses of neutrons with time width of 0.9-1.1 ns were produced via the 3H(d, n)4He reaction in a 150 keV Cockcroft-Walton linear accelerator, with average intensities of 9x108 n/s. The energy of the incident neutrons was between 14.75 MeV (at 16°) and 13.48 MeV (at 160°). High purity scattering ring samples were used. The scattering angles ranged from (almost equal to)16° to (almost equal to)150°, for iron, chromium, and nickel, and from (almost equal to)16° to (almost equal to)160° for niobium, with a typical step of (almost equal to)10°. High purity ring samples were used.

Download or read book Fast Neutron Cross Section Measurement System and Results written by Dale W. Glasgow and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A system has been designed and constructed for high accuracy neutron cross section measurements using pulsed beam time-of-flight techniques. The detection system has been used to obtain neutron scattering cross sections for Al, Si, Fe, Ni, and Co at 9.0 MeV incident neutron energy and to obtain a survey of neutron scattering by Carbon from 7 to 9 MeV incident energy. The cross sections have a normalization uncertainty or accuracy of about 5%, precision of 2-3% for strongly excited groups, and a precision of 5-10% for weakly excited groups. The report presents detailed design criteria for the detection system, and a description of detector shielding constructed for the measurements. It also contains a study of the data corrections which most strongly influence the accuracy of results. (Modified author abstract).

[Physics Dept., SUNY Albany]. written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research involved the measurement, analysis, and interpretation of high-resolution neutron total and capture cross sections in the neutron energy range of few eV to few hundred keV with many nuclei. The extensive measurements of total and capture cross section in many nuclei (64Zn, 66Zn, 67Zn, 68Zn, 7°Zn, 57Fe, 58Fe) have been analyzed with an R-matrix multilevel multichannel code for the total cross section and LSFIT code for the capture cross sections. The results of these analyses have been reported. The measurements of total and capture cross section in nuclei also provide valuable data for nucleosynthesis of elements, and a better understanding of the neutron interaction with nuclei. These measurements in certain nuclei are equally important for their application in the reactor design. Some effort was also spent in modifying various computer programs of data transfer, and area and shape analysis of neutron total cross section data. Research results are sketched, and references are given to completed papers.
