Book excerpt: From its inception, the Nuclear Data Project at the University of Michigan has concentrated on two major objectives: (1) to carry out carefully controlled nuclear measurements of the highest possible reliability in support of the national nuclear data program, and (2) to provide an educational opportunity for students with interests in experimental nuclear science. The project has undergone a successful transition from a primary dependence on our photoneutron laboratory to one in which our current research is entirely based on a unique pulsed 14 MeV fast neutron facility. The new experimental facility is unique in its ability to provide nanosecond bursts of 14 MeV neutrons under conditions that are clean'' and as scatter-free as possible, and is the only one of its type currently in operation in the United States. It has been designed and put into operation primarily by graduate students, and has met or exceeded all of its important initial performance goals. We have reached the point of its routine operation, and most of the data are now in hand that will serve as the basis for the first two doctoral dissertations to be written by participating graduate students. Our initial results on double differential neutron cross sections will be presented at the May 1993 Fusion Reactor Technology Workshop. We are pleased to report that, after investing several years in equipment assembly and optimization, the project has now entered its data production'' phase.

Book excerpt: A proper knowledge of neutron cross sections is very important for the operation safety of various nuclear facilities. Reducing uncertainties in the neutron cross sections can lead to an enhanced safety of present and future nuclear power systems. It is essential to have a tool to measure the neutron cross sections at required resolution. The Geel electron linear accelerator (GELINA) is the one with the best energy resolution. The main goal of this publication is to investigate the possibilities to improve even further the capabilities of this neutron data measurement facility. The present GELINA capabilities will be improved by designing a new high-power neutron producing target. The new target designed will substantially enhance the obtainable energy resolution, while not compromising the neutron flux. The first step was to optimize the target in size and material. The second step was to optimize a block-shaped geometry, instead of the cylindrical geometry.

Book excerpt: In this report, we outline the progress achieved in two distinct under the DOE-sponsored cross section project: the initial results obtained from the pulsed 14 MeV neutron facility, and a cooperative effort with Argonne National Laboratory in the measurement of fast neutron cross sections in yttrium. In the 14 MeV neutron laboratory, this year has seen the maturation of the project into one in which initial scattering measurements are now underway. We have improved the accelerator and ion source in several significant ways, so that neutron intensities have now been proven to be adequate for our series of elastic scattering angular distribution measurements outlined in our initial proposal of two years ago. We have successfully tested all components of the time-of-flight spectrometer and recorded initial neutron spectra from the ring targets that we have obtained for our first angular distribution measurements. Examples of the time-of-flight spectra that have been obtained are given later in this report. At the present time, the accelerator is operating with the highest degree of reliability that we have experienced since installing the pulsing system. Improvements made over the past year have not only increased the available neutron intensity, but also increased our capability to deal with inevitable component failures that require repair or replacement. The measurements carried out in conjunction with Argonne have contributed significantly to the available database on fast neutron interactions in yttrium. Results indicate that the cross section for the 89 Y(n, p)89Sr reaction is substantially higher than represented in ENDF/B-VI.

Book excerpt: The Committee on Dosimetry for the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) was set up more than a decade ago at the request of the U.S. Department of Energy. It was charged with monitoring work and experimental results related to the Dosimetry System 1986 (DS86) used by RERF to reconstruct the radiation doses to the survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. At the time it was established, DS86 was believed to be the best available dosimetric system for RERF, but questions have persisted about some features, especially the estimates of neutrons resulting from the Hiroshima bomb. This book describes the current situation, the gamma-ray dosimetry, and such dosimetry issues as thermal-neutron discrepancies between measurement and calculation at various distances in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It recommends approaches to bring those issues to closure and sets the stage for the recently convened U.S. and Japan Working Groups that will develop a new dosimetry for RERF. The book outlines the changes relating to DS86 in the past 15 years, such as improved numbers that go into, and are part of, more sophisticated calculations for determining the radiations from bombs that reach certain distances in air, and encourages incorporation of the changes into a revised dosimetry system.

Book excerpt: Neutron Cross Sections presents the principles of cross-section measurement and use, as well as sufficient theory so that the general behavior of cross sections is made understandable. This compilation is a direct result of experiences connected with the collection and evaluation of cross-section data during the past eight years at ""Sigma Centre"", Brookhaven National Laboratory. Here, experimental results received from laboratories throughout the world are carefully evaluated and compiled in the curves and tables of the large volume Neutron Cross Sections, The most recent version of the compilation, known as BNL 325, appeared 1 July 1955, and Supplement 1 to BNL 325 was published on 1 January 1957. The compilation itself consists almost completely of cross sections at specific energies, shown in the form of curves or tables, with only brief explanatory texts. The text opens with discussions of the general properties of cross sections and principles of nuclear structure that are important to the understanding of cross-section behavior. Separate chapters follow that describe specific techniques for measuring cross sections along with experimental results involving fast neutrons, resonance neutrons, resonances in fissionable materials, and thermal neutrons.

Book excerpt: Energy averaged total neutron cross sections are measured from approximately 1.0 to 4.5 MeV with few percent statistical accuracies. Differential elastic neutron scattering angular distributions are measured from 1.5 to 4.0 MeV at incident neutron energy intervals of less than or equal to 0.2 MeV. Differential cross sections for the inelastic neutron excitation of ''states'' at 158 +- 26, 891 +- 8, 984 +- 15, 1428 +- 39, 1541 +- 30, 1670 +- 80, 2007 +- 8, 2304 +- 22, 2424 +- 16, and 2615 +- 10 keV are measured for incident neutron energies from 1.5 to 4.0 MeV. Additional ''states'' are observed at approximately 2845 and 3009 keV. An energy-averaged optical-statistical model is deduced from the measured values and the implications of its use in the context of the strong fluctuating structure is discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A system has been designed and constructed for high accuracy neutron cross section measurements using pulsed beam time-of-flight techniques. The detection system has been used to obtain neutron scattering cross sections for Al, Si, Fe, Ni, and Co at 9.0 MeV incident neutron energy and to obtain a survey of neutron scattering by Carbon from 7 to 9 MeV incident energy. The cross sections have a normalization uncertainty or accuracy of about 5%, precision of 2-3% for strongly excited groups, and a precision of 5-10% for weakly excited groups. The report presents detailed design criteria for the detection system, and a description of detector shielding constructed for the measurements. It also contains a study of the data corrections which most strongly influence the accuracy of results. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: The fast-neutron capture cross sections of elemental rhodium, palladium, neodymium, and samarium were measured in the energy range 0.5 to 4.0 MeV relative to the standard capture cross section of gold. A large liquid scintillator and the time-of-flight technique were used in these measurements. Experimental data are rare or non-existent in this energy range and evaluations differ substantially, with a factor of 5 being common. The present data were used together with other experimental data and nuclear model calculations in order to provide a consistent set of isotopic and elemental capture cross sections. 5 figures.

Book excerpt: The time-of-flight technique was used with the ring scattering geometry in a laboratory with low neutron scattering background to measure the angular distributions of the cross sections for elastic and inelastic scattering of 14 MeV neutrons in natural chromium, iron, nickel, and niobium. Specifically for inelastic scattering included were: the 1.43 MeV and 4.56 MeV levels of 52Cr, the 0.85 MeV level, and (2.94-3.12) MeV and (4.46-4.51) MeV level groups of 56Fe, the 1.33 MeV level of 6°Ni combined with the 1.45 MeV level of 58Ni, and the 4.48 MeV level of 58Ni. Pulses of neutrons with time width of 0.9-1.1 ns were produced via the 3H(d, n)4He reaction in a 150 keV Cockcroft-Walton linear accelerator, with average intensities of 9x108 n/s. The energy of the incident neutrons was between 14.75 MeV (at 16°) and 13.48 MeV (at 160°). High purity scattering ring samples were used. The scattering angles ranged from (almost equal to)16° to (almost equal to)150°, for iron, chromium, and nickel, and from (almost equal to)16° to (almost equal to)160° for niobium, with a typical step of (almost equal to)10°. High purity ring samples were used.
