Book Synopsis Dressed for Freedom by : Einav Rabinovitch-Fox
Download or read book Dressed for Freedom written by Einav Rabinovitch-Fox and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often condemned as a form of oppression, fashion could and did allow women to express modern gender identities and promote feminist ideas. Einav Rabinovitch-Fox examines how clothes empowered women, and particularly women barred from positions of influence due to race or class. Moving from 1890s shirtwaists through the miniskirts and unisex styles of the 1970s, Rabinovitch-Fox shows how the rise of mass media culture made fashion a vehicle for women to assert claims over their bodies, femininity, and social roles. She also highlights how trends in women’s sartorial practices expressed ideas of independence and equality. As women employed new clothing styles, they expanded feminist activism beyond formal organizations and movements and reclaimed fashion as a realm of pleasure, power, and feminist consciousness. A fascinating account of clothing as an everyday feminist practice, Dressed for Freedom brings fashion into discussions of American feminism during the long twentieth century.

Book Synopsis Scenes from the Fashionable World by : Kennedy Fraser
Download or read book Scenes from the Fashionable World written by Kennedy Fraser and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2014-01-08 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "These essays, reprinted from the New Yorker, evince the fastidious prose and finely tuned insights praised in Fraser's first book, The Fashionable Mind. Four pieces emphasize the competition and hype surrounding designers, models, photographers, advertising people, etc.; other articles observe the trendy international scene. Fraser exceeds herself in "As Gorgeous as It Gets," which describes, in glittering detail, cosmetician Estee Lauder and her retinue on travels to promote a new perfume at Nieman-Marcus in Dallas and Saks, Bloomingdale's and Macy's in New York City. This wonderful collection will amaze and amuse readers." —Publisher's Weekly
Book Synopsis Fashionable Nonsense by : Alan Sokal
Download or read book Fashionable Nonsense written by Alan Sokal and published by Picador. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996 physicist Alan Sokal published an essay in Social Text--an influential academic journal of cultural studies--touting the deep similarities between quantum gravitational theory and postmodern philosophy. Soon thereafter, the essay was revealed as a brilliant parody, a catalog of nonsense written in the cutting-edge but impenetrable lingo of postmodern theorists. The event sparked a furious debate in academic circles and made the headlines of newspapers in the U.S. and abroad. In Fashionable Nonsense: Postmodern Intellectuals' Abuse of Science, Sokal and his fellow physicist Jean Bricmont expand from where the hoax left off. In a delightfully witty and clear voice, the two thoughtfully and thoroughly dismantle the pseudo-scientific writings of some of the most fashionable French and American intellectuals. More generally, they challenge the widespread notion that scientific theories are mere "narrations" or social constructions.

Book Synopsis Della Cruscan Poetry, Women and the Fashionable Newspaper by : Claire Knowles
Download or read book Della Cruscan Poetry, Women and the Fashionable Newspaper written by Claire Knowles and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores Della Cruscan poetry in the late eighteenth-century literary scene. A sociable, ornate, and deeply theatrical type of poetry, Della Cruscanism was associated with writers like Robert Merry, Mary Robinson, and Hannah Cowley. While Merry is the poet most commonly associated with the Della Cruscan school, this book argues that Della Cruscanism was a movement dominated by female poets and that this was one of the key reasons for the later disavowal and downgrading of its poetic accomplishments. It offers a close examination of these women writers and their role in shaping the poetic culture of the fashionable newspaper. In doing so, this study offers the first account of the feminization of the fashionable newspaper and of popular literary culture in the final years of the eighteenth century.
