Book excerpt: In January 2016, Billi J Miller launched her first published book (a four-and-a-half year labour of love) celebrating “traditional” farmwives (between the ages of fifty-five and ninety) for their remarkable contributions to their families, farms, and to the wider scope of Canadian heritage. Farmwives in Profile: 17 Women, 17 Candid Questions about their Lives, Photos & Recipes has been hailed a “gem” for its candid stories, delicious straight-from-the-farm-kitchen recipes, and Miller’s timeless photographs of the women. Now it’s the “next generations” turn. Farmwives 2: An Inspiring Look at the Lives of the New Canadian Farmwives is the highly anticipated follow-up that hones in on women in their twenties to fifties. This time, Miller interviews women from across the country— from British Columbia all the way to Newfoundland—broadening not only the look at Canada’s family farms but, women’s perspectives on this evolving role. "Farmwives 2" is loaded with all-new recipes, many more inspiring interviews, and features a special "Food for Thought" section filled with input by professionals you won't want to miss. Miller says she walked into this life eight years ago with no guidebook other than very traditional farmwives all around her, and a feeling in her gut that told her she had to make her life her own. This book is packed with interviews and stories from inspiring women from across Canada who are doing that very thing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A farmwife for 45 years, Rachel Peden believed that the family farm's best crop is a "harvest of the spirit." In Speak to the Earth, she looks at life—domestic and wild, human and critter—through the eyes of someone who witnesses nine seasons of the year rather than the typical four. Peden views the farm as "a place of opportunity simultaneous with obligation, an immaculate fitting-together of plant and animal life." Each year yields an abundance of small, priceless observations. Through her writings, Peden encourages readers to appreciate both the simple pleasures in life as well as the more profound qualities embodied in family and neighbors, mallards and ladybugs, possums and pigs, and the irresistible characteristics of old houses, local history, and changing times.

Book excerpt: Rosenfeld argues that farm women have rarely been identified as productive farm workers and that they continue to be seen only as mothers and homemakers. She shows that in addition to performing a wide range of farm work, these women in fact help ensure the farm's economic survival by contributing wages from outside employment. She raises questions about government policy and stresses the need for study in both industrialized and development societies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on white Anglo-Protestant farm women in southern and southwestern Ontario, Monda Halpern argues that many Ontario farm women were indeed feminist, and that this feminism was more progressive than their conservative image has suggested. In And On That Farm He Had a Wife Halpern demonstrates that Ontario farm women adhered to social feminism - a feminism that focused on values and experiences associated with women and that emphasized the differences between women and men, promoting female specificity, solidarity, and separatism. These principles were informed by farm women's overlapping roles as wives and unpaid farm labourers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Behalf of the Family Farm traces the development of women’s activism and agrarian feminisms in the Midwest after 1945, as farm women’s lives were being transformed by the realities of modern agriculture. Author Jenny Barker Devine demonstrates that in an era when technology, depopulation, and rapid economic change dramatically altered rural life, midwestern women met these challenges with their own feminine vision of farm life. Their “agrarian feminisms” offered an alternative to, but not necessarily a rejection of, second-wave feminism. Focusing on women in four national farm organizations in Iowa—the Farm Bureau, the Farmers Union, the National Farm Organization, and the Porkettes—Devine highlights specific moments in time when farm women had to reassess their roles and strategies for preserving and improving their way of life. Rather than retreat from the male-dominated world of agribusiness and mechanized production, postwar women increasingly asserted their identities as agricultural producers and demanded access to public spaces typically reserved for men. Over the course of several decades, they developed agrarian feminisms that combined cherished rural traditions with female empowerment, cooperation, and collaboration. Iowa farm women emphasized working partnerships between husbands and wives, women’s work in agricultural production, and women’s unique ways of understanding large-scale conventional farming.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the large-scale impacts of economic restructuring in the Midwest in response to the 1980s farm crisis. Drawing upon detailed surveys from twelve north-central states, the authors offer a comprehensive view of farm restructuring and its social, economic, and political consequences. The study goes beyond the farm gate to look at the broader implications of those changes for agriculture policy, related industries, and areas still dependent upon farming, contributing to the literature on economic restructuring. Like the factory closings in the Rust Belt, the dramatic failure of agricultural industries in the Farm Belt has caused fundamental changes in the organization and control of production. The impact of job losses and economic depression and the shattering of a way of life have shaken public complacency about the stability of many fundamental American myths. Beyond the Amber Waves of Grain looks at the farm crisis not as a purely agricultural, nonurban issue but as one that adds to our understanding of the overall social impacts of economic change. The book takes up the story of Midwestern farm enterprises in the wake of the farm crisis of the 1980s. Using data drawn from detailed surveys of 3,940 farm households in twelve north-central states, the authors offer a comprehensive view of the social and economic restructuring of agriculture and explore the consequences for farm enterprises, farm households, and farming communities. The study goes beyond the farm gate to look at the broader implications for related industries and communities dependent upon farming, for agricultural and rural policies, and for farm women and men, contributing to the literature on economic restructuring and its outcomes.
