Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grassland farming in Europe was already established during the settlement of the rst farmers together with their domesticated animals after the last ice age. Since then, grassland provides the forage basis to feed ruminant animals for the p- duction of meat and milk. Depending on the ecological conditions and intensity of usage, various plant communities with different species developed, displaying a rich biodiversity. With the introduction of improved crop rotations at the end of the 16th century, grasses and legumes were also grown to an important extent as forage crops on arable land. In the last decades the importance of amenity grasses increased markedly, due to the demand of the society for new usages like landscape protection. Around 1900 interested farmers and academics identi ed the need for gra- land improvement through systematic selection and seed production. This marks the beginning of breeding and research in companies but also at universities and specialized research institutes. Plant collection started with many of the species that are still of importance today. The collected materials were grouped according to the intended use and some type of phenotypic selection was applied. Seed mul- plication of such populations was performed in pure stands and the harvested seed was marketed. Although the vegetative biomass and its quality are of utmost imp- tance in forage crop breeding, it is the seed yield potential which determines the commercial success of a new variety.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pasture Grasses and Forage Plants, and Their Seeds, Weeds, and Parasites Latterly there has been much discussion and divergence of opinion regarding the comparative merits of the different cultivated grasses. Some authorities praising beyond measure certain varieties and depreciating others; while other authorities as strenuously advocate the opposite. Others again advocate the use of forage plants and grasses hitherto unknown to our agriculture, and so far has all this gone that a large section of the agricultural public is puzzled what guide to follow. Again it may be noted - if one may draw inferences from the queries addressed to the agricultural press, and from the results of many conversations held by the writer with farmers, and with people who sell seeds in different parts of the United Kingdom - that there is a surprising lack of information on the subject of the parasites that injure or destroy the forage plants and the weeds that rob or stifle them. It encompasses pests and beneficial insects as well as allied forms of importance in Australian agriculture. Organised by commodities – such as cereals, sugar and tropical pasture legumes – it examines all the pest species for a particular commodity across Australia. Identification, distribution, damage, host range, biology, risk period and monitoring techniques are described for each entry, accompanied by useful illustrations. The book also describes introduced biological control agents that effectively control crop pests. Pests of Field Crops and Pastures will be a useful tool in crop management for progressive farmers, agronomists, agricultural consultants and academics alike.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grasses of North America for Farmers and Students: Comprising Chapters on Their Physiology, Composition, Selection, Improving, Cultivation, Management of Grass Lands; Also Chapters on Clovers, Injurious Insects, and Fungi This volume may appear fragmentary and disconnected and may contain repetitions, and there maybe important omis sions. This is partially owing to the fact that much of the work has been performed at odd hours, sometimes with many days intervening. A full index will enable any one to find the topics which are mentioned. It is hoped that the farmer or general reader who has never studied botany, will find much to interest and help him, while it is believed the agricultural student will find still more. While many points are mentioned and illustrations freely used, no attempt has been made to write a complete account of the structure and physiology of grasses.
