Book Synopsis The Persian Revival by : Talinn Grigor
Download or read book The Persian Revival written by Talinn Grigor and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2021-07-15 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most heated scholarly controversies of the early twentieth century, the Orient-or-Rome debate turned on whether art historians should trace the origin of all Western—and especially Gothic—architecture to Roman ingenuity or to the Indo-Germanic Geist. Focusing on the discourses around this debate, Talinn Grigor considers the Persian Revival movement in light of imperial strategies of power and identity in British India and in Qajar-Pahlavi Iran. The Persian Revival examines Europe’s discovery of ancient Iran, first in literature and then in art history. Tracing Western visual discourse about ancient Iran from 1699 on, Grigor parses the invention and use of a revivalist architectural style from the Afsharid and Zand successors to the Safavid throne and the rise of the Parsi industrialists as cosmopolitan subjects of British India. Drawing on a wide range of Persian revival narratives bound to architectural history, Grigor foregrounds the complexities and magnitude of artistic appropriations of Western art history in order to grapple with colonial ambivalence and imperial aspirations. She argues that while Western imperialism was instrumental in shaping high art as mercantile-bourgeois ethos, it was also a project that destabilized the hegemony of a Eurocentric historiography of taste. An important reconsideration of the Persian Revival, this book will be of vital interest to art and architectural historians and intellectual historians, particularly those working in the areas of international modernism, Iranian studies, and historiography.

Download or read book Early Persian Lexicography written by Solomon I. Baevskii and published by Global Oriental. This book was released on 2007-06-21 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the only study in a Western European language of an important part of the intellectual and cultural history of the Persianate world in its formative phase. Persian dictionaries (farhangs) of the Islamic era, compiled principally in India, represent a unique linguistic undertaking that has no counterpart in pre-modern Europe. Solomon Baevskii (University of St Petersburg, emeritus) based his work on books and manuscripts from South Asia, Iran, Central Asia and Russia, charting the evolution of these documents from lexical and cultural-historical perspectives. Published originally in Russian in 1989, the book is here presented in a new English edition, revised and updated by John Perry, Professor of Persian at the University of Chicago.
Book Synopsis Riza Shah Pahlavi by : Donald Newton Wilber
Download or read book Riza Shah Pahlavi written by Donald Newton Wilber and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When first published in 1975, this book for the first time in any language was the full-length study of Riza [Reza] Shah Pahlavi and his time. His participation in the coup d'etat of 1921 marked the opening stage of resurrection of Iran [Persia], while his coronation in 1926 as the first monarch of the Pahlavi dynasty marked the unfolding of its reconstruction. This is the story of a man who loved his country more than life itself. Born in 1878, starting on a career as a soldier with little education and no fortune, he became an absolute monarch, implacable on his hatred of foreign influence, demanding of himself and his people. Rising through the ranks of the army, holding council with no one, Riza Shah envisaged a modern and powerful nation, and when the opportunity came he seized it--striving to unite the villagers, the nomads, the city dwellers into a strongly nationalistic, progressive country"--Provided by publisher.

Book Synopsis The Good Daughter by : Jasmin Darznik
Download or read book The Good Daughter written by Jasmin Darznik and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-27 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We were a world of two, my mother and I, until I started turning into an American girl. That's when she began telling me about The Good Daughter. It became a taunt, a warning, an omen. Jasmin Darznik came to America from Iran when she was only three years old, and she grew up knowing very little about her family's history. When she was in her early twenties, on a day shortly following her father's death, Jasmin was helping her mother move; a photograph fell from a stack of old letters. The girl pictured was her mother. She was wearing a wedding veil, and at her side stood a man whom Jasmin had never seen before. At first, Jasmin's mother, Lili, refused to speak about the photograph, and Jasmin returned to her own home frustrated and confused. But a few months later, she received from her mother the first of ten cassette tapes that would bring to light the wrenching hidden story of her family's true origins in Iran: Lili's marriage at thirteen, her troubled history of abuse and neglect, and a daughter she was forced to abandon in order to escape that life. The final tape revealed that Jasmin's sister, Sara - The Good Daughter - was still living in Iran. In this sweeping, poignant, and beautifully written memoir, Jasmin weaves the stories of three generations of Iranian women into a unique tale of one family's struggle for freedom and understanding. The result is an enchanting and unforgettable story of secrets, betrayal, and the unbreakable mother-daughter bond.
