Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Last spring, Pansy chickened out on going to spring break camp, even though she’d promised her best friend, Anna, she’d go. It was just like when they went to get their hair cut for Locks of Love; only one of them walked out with a new hairstyle, and it wasn’t Pansy. But Pansy never got the chance to make it up to Anna. While at camp, Anna contracted meningitis and a dangerously high fever, and she hasn’t been the same since. Now all Pansy wants is her best friend back—not the silent girl in the wheelchair who has to go to a special school and who can’t do all the things Pansy used to chicken out of doing. So when Pansy discovers that Anna is getting a surgery that might cure her, Pansy realizes this is her chance—she’ll become the friend she always should have been. She’ll become the best friend Anna’s ever had—even if it means taking risks, trying new things (like those scary roller skates), and running herself ragged in the process. Pansy’s chasing extraordinary, hoping she reaches it in time for her friend’s triumphant return. But what lies at the end of Pansy’s journey might not be exactly what she had expected—or wanted. Extraordinary is a heartfelt, occasionally funny, coming-of-age middle grade novel by debut author Miriam Spitzer Franklin. It’s sure to appeal to fans of Cynthia Lord’s Rules and will inspire young friends to cherish the times they spend together. Every day should be lived like it’s extraordinary. Sky Pony Press, with our Good Books, Racehorse and Arcade imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of books for young readers—picture books for small children, chapter books, books for middle grade readers, and novels for young adults. Our list includes bestsellers for children who love to play Minecraft; stories told with LEGO bricks; books that teach lessons about tolerance, patience, and the environment, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Book excerpt: “THE RAINBOW BOOK” is a wonderful collection of children’s tales of fun and fancy penned by Mabel Henriette Spielmann (1862–1938). It includes the tales of: ‘Adventures in Wizard Land’ (illustrated by Arthur Rackham), ‘The Little Picture Girl’ (Hugh Thomson), ‘The Sleeping Beauty’s Dream’ (Bernard Partridge), ‘The Gamekeeper’s Daughter’ (Lewis Baumer), ‘Cedric’s Unaccountable Adventure’ (Harry Rountree), ‘Father Christmas at Home’ (Arthur Rackham) and many more. This book contains a selection of illustrations from some of the greatest artists from the Golden Age of Illustration. It showcases the drawings of Arthur Rackham, Hugh Thompson, Bernard Partridge, Lewis Baumer, Harry Rountree and C. Wilhelm. Although all fine artists in their own right, Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) is by far the most famous – whose work is quite simply, unparalleled The little Fairy-people are the favourite children of Fancy, for they can do magical things. They were born into this serious world of ages to help brighten it, and also to make it more graceful, dainty and prettily romantic than it is. We have found the little-people of Folk-lore were learned people with the wisdom of ages and whose learnings were all topsy-turvy, for it dealt with toads, and storms, and diseases, and what strange things would happen if you mixed any or all of them up together - how a vampire would flee if you held up a clove of garlic, and how a tempest would suddenly stop if you sprinkled a few drops of vinegar in front of it. No doubt, since then thousands of people have sprinkled tens of thousands of gallons of good vinegar before advancing tempests, and although tempests pay far less attention to the liquid than troubled waters do to a pint of oil, the sprinklers and their descendants have gone on believing with a touching faith, which is pretty, if not totally impractical. But what is pretty and practical too, is that all of us should sometimes let our fancy and our imaginations roam, and that we should laugh a lot more as well, over Fairy-stories and about life in general, no matter what hand it deals us. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines pantomime and theatricality in nineteenth-century histories of folklore and the fairy tale. In nineteenth-century Britain, the spectacular and highly profitable theatrical form known as "pantomime" was part of a shared cultural repertoire and a significant medium for the transmission of stories. Rowdy, comedic, and slightly risqué, pantomime productions were situated in dynamic relationship with various forms of print and material culture. Popular fairy-tale theater also informed the production and reception of folklore research in ways that are often overlooked. In Staging Fairyland: Folklore, Children's Entertainment, and Nineteenth-Century Pantomime, Jennifer Schacker reclaims the place of theatrical performance in this history, developing a model for the intermedial and cross-disciplinary study of narrative cultures. The case studies that punctuate each chapter move between the realms of print and performance, scholarship and popular culture. Schacker examines pantomime productions of such well-known tales as "Cinderella," "Little Red Riding Hood," and "Jack and the Beanstalk," as well as others whose popularity has waned—such as, "Daniel O'Rourke" and "The Yellow Dwarf." These productions resonate with traditions of impersonation, cross-dressing, literary imposture, masquerade, and the social practice of "fancy dress." Schacker also traces the complex histories of Mother Goose and Mother Bunch, who were often cast as the embodiments of both tale-telling and stage magic and who move through various genres of narrative and forms of print culture. These examinations push at the limits of prevailing approaches to the fairy tale across media. They also demonstrate the degree to which perspectives on the fairy tale as children's entertainment often obscure the complex histories and ideological underpinnings of specific tales. Mapping the histories of tales requires a fundamental reconfiguration of our thinking about early folklore study and about "fairy tales": their bearing on questions of genre and ideology but also their signifying possibilities—past, present, and future. Readers interested in folklore, fairy-tale studies, children's literature, and performance studies will embrace this informative monograph.
