Book excerpt: This study explored the impact of family relationship dynamics on college student adjustment measures for 61 first-year first-generation college students. Students volunteered to complete a self-report questionnaire during their second semester of college, measuring psychological coping, family relationships, and academic, social, personal-emotional, and overall college adjustment. Actual student end-of-year and first-semester grade point average (GPA) and high school rank were also obtained. Hierarchical regression analysis results indicated that positive family relationship dynamics were predictive of positive personal-emotional college adjustment over and above that accounted for by prior academic achievement and psychological coping. However, the amount of additional explained variance was only 3%. Family relationship interaction was not associated with academic or social adjustment outcomes. Psychological coping provided a significant main effect, after partialing out prior achievement, for student social, academic, personal-emotional, and overall adjustment. Lower negative mood was associated with higher adjustment. Student prior academic achievement was also positively related to academic adjustment, overall adjustment and student end-of-year GPA. Both prior academic achievement and psychological coping explained a high percentage of the variance in adjustment outcomes for this study, showing the need to control for these variables in future college adjustment research. This research points to student mood and emotional coping as an important area of institutional intervention for first-year first-generation students following their first semester of college. Since psychological coping was found to provide a substantial amount of explained variance in college student adjustment, student academic support programs need to be designed to assist students in identifying current mood and level of functioning, individual coping resources, and ways of maintaining a positive attitude and self-image. An emphasis on affective coping skills, important relationship connections and activities that promote self-esteem and a sense of confidence will help students understand their college situation in a way that supports their ability to manage it successfully and accomplish their goals.

Book excerpt: The literature on Latino college students, particularly at Predominantly White Universities, suggests that they are enrolling at higher rates at the beginning of the first year in college than prior years, but dropping out at higher rates than any other racial/ethnic group. For students whom are the first in their family to attend college, attrition rates are even more pronounced. In the present study, based on Bourdieu's Social Capital Theory, group differences based on race/ethnicity and college-generational status were examined for reported anxiety, depression, and academic problems at the beginning and end of the first semester of students' first year at a university. The results indicated that differences in reported outcome measures were greater when examined between college-generation Mexican American groups, rather than between racial/ethnic groups more generally. Additionally, it was hypothesized that for Mexican American first-generation college students, perceived family support at the beginning of the semester would mediate the relationship between academic self-efficacy and academic problems at the end of the semester. The results of the study provided support for this hypothesis, suggesting that perceived support from family, even when it is not entirely instrumental, offers benefits for first-generation Mexican American college students. Implications for future interventions, both pre and post-college entry are discussed.

Book excerpt: The current study explored the effects of non-traditional choices on psychological well-being. Participants were divided into groups by their generational status. First generation college students (FGC) reported that neither of their parents had any college experience while the students from college educated families (CEF) reported that one or both of their parents had some education beyond high school. The study utilized self-report, archival data. The Scales of Psychological Well-Being (Ryff, 1989) provided overall well-being scores as well as six subscales. The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (Zimet, Dahlem, Zimet & Farley, 1988), two subscales of the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (Bake & Siryk, 1984), and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965) were also used. These three constructs were also understood in their relationship to well-being. The results suggest that self-esteem and social support from friends are important factors for all college students. Academic adjustment appeared to be related to well-being for all students but was more predictive of well-being for the FGC students. In looking at perceived social support from family, FGC students indicated a negative correlation between this type of support and their feelings of autonomy. Similarly, a linear regression model for CEF students showed that perceived social support from family was one of three variables in a model predicting well-being. No significant group differences were observed in the reports of overall well-being, perceived social support, self-esteem, or adaptation to college. This was contrary to what was hypothesized, but may be the result of a unique sample which included many older, African American women who commuted to school. Considerations of the sample and its influence on the findings have been included. Suggestions for future research address the need to produce more generalizable findings and further differentiate between the needs of FGC students and the needs of new college students in general.

Consequently, this unique subgroup of college students are the focus of many post-secondary education studies to determine factors that contribute to their success (Mehta, Newbold, & O'Rourke, 2011; Owens, Lacey, Rawls, & Holbert-Quince, 2010; Pascarella, Wolniak, Pierson, & Terenzini, 2003; Prospero & Vohra-Gupta, 2007). Literature on FGCS calls for an examination of ecological (e.g., community factors) and individual factors relating to college adjustment and well-being as well as the role of general self-efficacy in these links (Dennis, Phinney, & Chuateco, 2005; Plybon, Edwards, Butler, Belgrave, & Allison, 2003). Sampling ethnic and racial minority FGCS and White FGCS at various U.S. American institutions, the present study examined the direct and indirect relations between community factors and college student adjustment and personal well-being (i.e., life satisfaction), through general self-efficacy. Findings suggest that the relations between community factors, self-efficacy, college adjustment, and life satisfaction differ for ethnic and racial minority FGCS and White FGCS. Implications are provided for the design of more effective counseling interventions and higher education programming for ethnically and racially diverse FGCS.

Although much research has been done to support this population of students in the transition and adjustment to the college culture, little research has been completed about the experiences they face upon their return home to their family culture. Due to the lack of shared experiences, first-generation college students may encounter an increase in psychological issues when re-assimilating to their family culture after engaging in the college culture. Because research has indicated that secure attachment bonds lessen the impact of psychological symptoms such as stress, anxiety, and isolation during the transition and adjustment period to college, it may be possible that strong attachment decreases these same psychological issues during the transition and adjustment back home. This study examined the differences of the re-entry experiences of first-year college students based on generation status to their family culture using a theoretical lens that investigated theories of re-entry shock and parental attachment. The presence of secure attachment bonds from family relationships and the impact of these bonds as they relate to transition and adjustment home were also explored. The research design considered the characteristics of gender and ethnicity and the role they played on the dependent variables of re-entry shock and parental attachment. Although the results of the study did not find statistically significant differences between groups regarding re-entry shock, significant differences were found in regard to parental attachment bonds based on gender and generation status. Understanding differences in parental bonds will assist student affairs practitioners in offering ongoing programs and services that not only assist students in their transition back to their family culture, but may also make parents and families more aware of the opportunities and challenges that their students face throughout the college journey."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.
