Book excerpt: The delivery of high quality and equitable care for both mothers and newborns is complex and requires efforts across many sectors. The United States spends more on childbirth than any other country in the world, yet outcomes are worse than other high-resource countries, and even worse for Black and Native American women. There are a variety of factors that influence childbirth, including social determinants such as income, educational levels, access to care, financing, transportation, structural racism and geographic variability in birth settings. It is important to reevaluate the United States' approach to maternal and newborn care through the lens of these factors across multiple disciplines. Birth Settings in America: Outcomes, Quality, Access, and Choice reviews and evaluates maternal and newborn care in the United States, the epidemiology of social and clinical risks in pregnancy and childbirth, birth settings research, and access to and choice of birth settings.

Book excerpt: Many regulatory and professional agencies countenance the idea of patient-and family-centered care, yet lack an infrastructure able to support such care or employ health care professionals who lack the necessary education, experience, or skills. This book is a comprehensive guide to family-centered care for healthy, ill, or preterm newborns. It guides health care professionals in creating, supporting, and advancing a culture that values partnerships with families. The book is replete with practical suggestions, strategies for effectively communicating with families, and best practices for health professionals who wish to develop partnerships with families before and after childbirth. At the core of family-centered care is the belief that family-centered care and the ability to convey its particular language is as important to newborn and family wellbeing as clinical care. The book is based on four guiding principles that include treating people with dignity and respect, providing information in ways that are useful and affirming, welcoming family participation in care and decision-making at a level chosen by the family, and collaborating with families at the bedside and beyond. The book offers strategies to promote implementation of a family-centered environment in the delivery room or NICU, practical approaches to communicating with families before and after delivery, and tips on policy review to facilitate a culture of family-centered care. It also discusses how to welcome families during interdisciplinary rounds and nurse hand-offs, and ways to support families during procedures and resuscitation. Key Features: Provides a comprehensive guide to implementing family-centered care for healthy, ill, and preterm newborns Guides health care professionals in creating, supporting, and advancing a culture that values partnerships with families Offers strategies for effectively communicating with families to foster family-centered care Reflects on the power of language used with and about families Includes tips on policy review to foster and support a culture of family-centered care

Book excerpt: What should the concept of complete maternity care embrace? What contribution can it make to the individual and society? What is the role of the various professions providing service? And what part should expectant parents be encouraged and helped to play? This book explores the full range of the art and science of obstetric nursing. Interwoven with detailed scientific facts and practical guides to techniques are a broad and tender philosophy and an understanding, based on actual experience, of how good maternity nursing can enrich the childbearing experience and foster the necessary adjustments within the family. -- from Foreword.

Book excerpt: The evaluation of reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) by the Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (DCP3) focuses on maternal conditions, childhood illness, and malnutrition. Specifically, the chapters address acute illness and undernutrition in children, principally under age 5. It also covers maternal mortality, morbidity, stillbirth, and influences to pregnancy and pre-pregnancy. Volume 3 focuses on developments since the publication of DCP2 and will also include the transition to older childhood, in particular, the overlap and commonality with the child development volume. The DCP3 evaluation of these conditions produced three key findings: 1. There is significant difficulty in measuring the burden of key conditions such as unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortion, nonsexually transmitted infections, infertility, and violence against women. 2. Investments in the continuum of care can have significant returns for improved and equitable access, health, poverty, and health systems. 3. There is a large difference in how RMNCH conditions affect different income groups; investments in RMNCH can lessen the disparity in terms of both health and financial risk.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since childbirth became a medicalized - and usually hospitalized - event a century ago, women's and families' psychosocial needs have been relegated to a somewhat peripheral role within the clinically focussed hierarchy of medical care. This text reinstates psychosocial issues as a primary focus of care, together with clinical excellence. Family-centred care is a familiar phrase in today's maternity services, with professional guidelines and hospital policies including the term in their care protocols; however, few definitions, and no specific standards, for family-centred care exist. While all caregivers and care services are likely to define their care as sensitive to women's needs, and family-centred, the actual implementation of a family-centred approach - despite it being a current fashion in care - is still inadequate. This book clearly defines family-centred perinatal care, and outlines how truly family-centred care can, and should, be implemented, and how, and where, this has been done.

Maternal Child Nursing Care, 7th Edition covers the issues and concerns of women during their childbearing years and children during their developing years. It uses a family-centered, problem-solving approach to patient care, with guidelines supported by evidence-based practice. New to this edition is an emphasis on clinical judgment skills and a new chapter on children with integumentary dysfunction. Written by a team of experts led by Shannon E. Perry and Marilyn J. Hockenberry, this book provides the accurate information you need to succeed in the classroom, the clinical setting, and on the Next Generation NCLEX-RN® examination. Focus on the family throughout the text emphasizes the influence of the entire family in health and illness. Expert authors of the market-leading maternity and pediatric nursing textbooks combine to ensure delivery of the most accurate, up-to-date content. Nursing Alerts highlight critical information that could lead to deteriorating or emergency situations. Guidelines boxes outline nursing procedures in an easy-to-follow format. Evidence-Based Practice boxes include findings from recent clinical studies. Emergency Treatment boxes describe the signs and symptoms of emergency situations and provide step-by-step interventions. Atraumatic Care boxes teach students how to manage pain and provide competent care to pediatric patients with the least amount of physical or psychological stress. Community Focus boxes emphasize community issues, provide resources and guidance, and illustrate nursing care in a variety of settings. Patient Teaching boxes highlight important information nurses need to communicate to patients and families. Cultural Considerations boxes describe beliefs and practices relating to pregnancy, labor and birth, parenting, and women’s health. Family-Centered Care boxes draw attention to the needs or concerns of families that students should consider to provide family-centered care.

Book excerpt: An essential manual encompassing the entire childbearing process, from preconception planning through pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Content progresses from normal to at-risk information within each phase: pregnancy, labor and birth, care of the newborn, and the postpartum period. Cultural aspects of childbearing and material on the childbearing adolescent are integrated appropriately throughout. Every page has been updated to reflect the most current research and technology. The underlying philosophy of the text, however, remains unchanged: pregnancy and birth are normal life processes; members of the family are co-participants in care; and the nursing process provides the nursing diagnoses. Each of the learning aids reflected in this new edition has been grounded in that philosophy and commitment toa family-centered approach.
