Book excerpt: A comprehensive account of the statistical theory of exponential families of stochastic processes. The book reviews the progress in the field made over the last ten years or so by the authors - two of the leading experts in the field - and several other researchers. The theory is applied to a broad spectrum of examples, covering a large number of frequently applied stochastic process models with discrete as well as continuous time. To make the reading even easier for statisticians with only a basic background in the theory of stochastic process, the first part of the book is based on classical theory of stochastic processes only, while stochastic calculus is used later. Most of the concepts and tools from stochastic calculus needed when working with inference for stochastic processes are introduced and explained without proof in an appendix. This appendix can also be used independently as an introduction to stochastic calculus for statisticians. Numerous exercises are also included.

This book was released on 2021-10-07 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a concise introduction to exponential families. Parametric families of probability distributions and their properties are extensively studied in the literature on statistical modeling and inference. Exponential families of distributions comprise density functions of a particular form, which enables general assertions and leads to nice features. With a focus on parameter estimation and hypotheses testing, the text introduces the reader to distributional and statistical properties of multivariate and multiparameter exponential families along with a variety of detailed examples. The material is widely self-contained and written in a mathematical setting. It may serve both as a concise, mathematically rigorous course on exponential families in a systematic structure and as an introduction to Mathematical Statistics restricted to the use of exponential families.

The roots of the book lie in the writings of RA Fisher both as concerns results and the general stance to statistical science, and this stance was the determining factor in the author's selection of topics. His treatise brings together results on aspects of statistical information, notably concerning likelihood functions, plausibility functions, ancillarity, and sufficiency, and on exponential families of probability distributions.

Book excerpt: This book is concerned with two areas of mathematics, at first sight disjoint, and with some of the analogies and interactions between them. These areas are the theory of linear differential equations in one complex variable with polynomial coefficients, and the theory of one parameter families of exponential sums over finite fields. After reviewing some results from representation theory, the book discusses results about differential equations and their differential galois groups (G) and one-parameter families of exponential sums and their geometric monodromy groups (G). The final part of the book is devoted to comparison theorems relating G and G of suitably "corresponding" situations, which provide a systematic explanation of the remarkable "coincidences" found "by hand" in the hypergeometric case.

Book excerpt: Modern statistical methods use complex, sophisticated models that can lead to intractable computations. Saddlepoint approximations can be the answer. Written from the user's point of view, this book explains in clear language how such approximate probability computations are made, taking readers from the very beginnings to current applications. The core material is presented in chapters 1-6 at an elementary mathematical level. Chapters 7-9 then give a highly readable account of higher-order asymptotic inference. Later chapters address areas where saddlepoint methods have had substantial impact: multivariate testing, stochastic systems and applied probability, bootstrap implementation in the transform domain, and Bayesian computation and inference. No previous background in the area is required. Data examples from real applications demonstrate the practical value of the methods. Ideal for graduate students and researchers in statistics, biostatistics, electrical engineering, econometrics, and applied mathematics, this is both an entry-level text and a valuable reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a long time computer scientists have distinguished between fast and slow algo rithms. Fast (or good) algorithms are the algorithms that run in polynomial time, which means that the number of steps required for the algorithm to solve a problem is bounded by some polynomial in the length of the input. All other algorithms are slow (or bad). The running time of slow algorithms is usually exponential. This book is about bad algorithms. There are several reasons why we are interested in exponential time algorithms. Most of us believe that there are many natural problems which cannot be solved by polynomial time algorithms. The most famous and oldest family of hard problems is the family of NP complete problems. Most likely there are no polynomial time al gorithms solving these hard problems and in the worst case scenario the exponential running time is unavoidable. Every combinatorial problem is solvable in ?nite time by enumerating all possi ble solutions, i. e. by brute force search. But is brute force search always unavoid able? De?nitely not. Already in the nineteen sixties and seventies it was known that some NP complete problems can be solved signi?cantly faster than by brute force search. Three classic examples are the following algorithms for the TRAVELLING SALESMAN problem, MAXIMUM INDEPENDENT SET, and COLORING.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Guide for Growing Your Ministry Marriage into All God Wants it to Be God did a miracle on your wedding day when he united you as husband and wife. God intends for that to be just the starting point of a journey into a full "oneness," which will thrill you and powerfully unleash his gospel. Sadly, most marriages stop far short of God's dream for them. Together with Family was written to help marriages, especially ministry marriages, grow and thrive. It will assist you in defining the current level of your marriage. It also offers five essential marriage habits and how to cultivate them so that your marriage can advance to the "oneness" of a Level 5 marriage. Authors Larry and Deb Walkemeyer write with experiences from over forty years of ministry leadership, decades of counseling other pastors, lessons from their own failures and triumphs, and their passion to see marriages be used as effective tools for God's multiplication mission. The Walkemeyers draw on all these to share key learnings on successful marriages. Through scriptural teaching, compelling stories, and time-tested wisdom, they offer the path forward for marriages. Every couple, especially couples in ministry leadership, need to learn and implement these five habits that lead to true "oneness." "If you want to move a struggling marriage to a good marriage or move a good marriage to a great marriage, Together with Family is a terrific book to show you how." -- Dave and Sue Ferguson, Community Christian Church, New Thing LARRY and DEB WALKEMEYER are Co-Lead Pastors of Light & Life Christian Fellowship in Long Beach, California. Light & Life is a large urban, multi-ethnic church which has planted many churches locally and globally. Larry holds a Doctorate of Ministry, has authored eight books, and is Director of Equipping and Spiritual Engagement for Exponential. Deb holds a Doctorate in Church Leadership, is a licensed Marriage Counselor, and leads the Compton Community Garden.
