Book excerpt: Families, Lovers, and their Letters takes us into the passionate hearts and minds of ordinary people caught in the heartbreak of transatlantic migration. It examines the experiences of Italian migrants to Canada and their loved ones left behind in Italy following the Second World War, when the largest migration of Italians to Canada took place. In a micro-analysis of 400 private letters, including three collections that incorporate letters from both sides of the Atlantic, Sonia Cancian provides new evidence on the bidirectional flow of communication during migration. She analyzes how kinship networks functioned as a means of support and control through the flow of news, objects, and persons; how gender roles in productive and reproductive spheres were reinforced as a means of coping with separation; and how the emotional impact of both temporary and permanent separation was expressed during the migration process. Cancian also examines the love letter as a specific form of epistolary exchange, a first in Italian immigrant historiography, revealing the powerful effect that romantic love had on the migration experience.

Filled with love, resilience, humor, wonder, and encouragement, the letters offer a unique perspective on the events of the unforgettable day that forever changed our world. The authors of these letters are adolescents, teens, young adults, spouses, parents, siblings, nieces, and grandparents. They are first- generation Americans, citizens of other nations, and lifelong New Yorkers. But they all share one thing: They honor their loved ones by living their lives with purpose, and a promise to never forget. These courageous family members share their grief and loss-and hope- speaking in their own words, with love, courage, and strength enough to inspire us all.

As a literary portrait of a father and son, little can match the eloquence and honesty of this collection of letters, written between Allen Ginsberg and his father, Louis, spanning the years 1944 to 1976. Their correspondence is filled with affection, respect, and a healthy dose of argumentative zeal-they debate every major political and artistic issue that faced America in over three decades of extraordinary change. But the letters also tell of a strong bond of intimacy and affection between the two, revealing just how crucial that closeness was to the development of Allen Ginsberg's art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1961, Murray and Dorothy Leiffer went to Singapore to study the status of Methodism in that country. They befriended Samuel Wong, then a college student, and encouraged him to pursue advanced training in the United States. Upon Wong’s graduation, they adopted him as their “number two son.” Over a thirty-year period, they wrote him letters from different parts of the world and the United States, telling him of their work and of life in America. They spoke of their visits with friends. They shared about their social and civic engagements as residents, citizens, and church members. They wrote freely about their travel experiences and their observations on jobs, marriage, family, nature, and retirement. Their letters are evidence of an unconditional love flowing through all those years, a vivid reminder that Wong was loved as he was, not “despite of” or “because of.” They groomed Wong for church service, but he became a bureaucrat in the federal government. They expected him to honor the marriage vow of “till death us do part,” but he broke it in the pursuit of academic and career advancement. Yet they never said they were disappointed in Wong. These letters, published as Unconditional Love: Letters to an Adopted Son and Unconditional Love: Letters to an Adopted Family, draw a portrait of an extraordinary couple that demonstrates in their everyday life the essence of unconditional love. They are complementary to the couple’s reminiscences on a seminary campus, Enter the Old Portals (1987), and a companion to Wong’s autobiography, A Chinese from Singapore (2009). Their letters are testimonies to grace and fidelity, a reminder of that which is true and honorable, civil and decent.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From filmmaker and New Yorker contributor Susanna Fogel comes a comedic novel about a fractured family of New England Jews and their discontents, over the course of three decades. Told entirely in letters to a heroine we never meet, we get to know the Fellers through their check-ins with Julie: their thank-you notes, letters of condolence, family gossip, and good old-fashioned familial passive-aggression. Together, their missives – some sardonic, others absurd, others heartbreaking – weave a tapestry of a very modern family trying (and often failing) to show one another they care. The titular “Nuclear Family” includes, among many others: A narcissistic former-child-prodigy father who has taken up haiku writing in his old age and his new wife, a traditional Chinese woman whose attempts to help her stepdaughter find a man include FedExing her silk gowns from Filene’s Basement. Their six-year-old son, Stuart, whose favorite condiment is truffle oil and who wears suits to bed. Julie’s mother, a psychologist who never remarried but may be in love with her arrogant Rabbi and overshares about everything, including the threesome she had with Dutch grad students in 1972.

Book excerpt: In The Secret Love Letters: A Family History, the author delves into the history of her Spanish ancestors, the once-illustrious San Miguels, and uncovers the forbidden love affair that tore the family apart. Fay Johnston told her daughter of a collection of letters she had kept hidden away for over 60 years, promising to show them to her when the time was right. It was only after her mother died that Dolores found the letters, concealed beneath a large piece of wood deep within a storage cupboard. Through endless research and close analysis, Dolores pieced together nearly a hundred letters, newspaper ads, doctors' notes, and postcards to unravel the story of her parents' romance, kept secret for over two decades. Dolores San Miguel, acclaimed author of The Ballroom: The Melbourne Punk and Post-punk Scene delivers a luminous, tightly woven account that places her own family saga in the wider context of early European immigration to Australia, as well as offering a fascinating glimpse into Melbourne life in the lead-up to World War 2.

Book excerpt: Joan Sohn found her grandparents? 36 letters, tucked away for 65 years in a small brown paper bag. When she read them, her family?s story came alive. Of course, there were missing pieces?many of them; and so she began a long labor of love, filling in the gaps. Thanks to those letters and Sohn?s determination, we have that story ? about people who left their homes for a new start and never returned. They reinvented themselves; they changed their citizenship, their language, their customs, and even their names. 36 Letters is about separation, personal struggle, and achievement. It?s about people who landed at Ellis Island and made their way, somehow, to New York?s Lower East Side, and then to Philadelphia, where they grew and multiplied and made remarkable contributions to the city?s development. Accompanied by over 100 stunning photographs, maps and illustrations, and, of course, the letters.

Book excerpt: An elegantly designed, beautifully composed volume of personal letters from famous American men and women that celebrates the American Experience and illuminates the rich history of some of America’s most storied families. Posterity is at once an epistolary chronicle of America and a fascinating glimpse into the hearts and minds of some of history’s most admired figures and storied families. Spanning more than three centuries, these letters contain enduring lessons—in life, love, character and compassion—that will surprise and enlighten. Included here are letters from Thomas Jefferson to his daughter, warning her of the evils of debt; General Patton on D-Day to his son, a cadet at West Point, about what it means to be a good soldier; W.E.B. Du Bois to his daughter about character beneath the color of skin; Oscar Hammerstein about why, after all his success, he doesn’t stop working; Woody Guthrie, writing from a New Jersey asylum, to nine-year-old Arlo about universal human frailty; Eleanor Roosevelt chastising her grown son for his Christmas plans; and Groucho Marx as a dog to his twenty-five-year-old son. Here are renowned Americans in their own words and in their own times, seen as they were seen by their children. Here are our great Americans as mothers and fathers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the continuing U.S. debate over illegal immigration, a human face has rarely been shown. The topic has been presented as a monolithic abstraction, a creation of statistics, political rhetoric, and fear. This collection of letters between undocumented immigrants in California and their families back home reveals the other side of the story. Published for the first time in paperback, Between the Lines reveals the often poignant human drama currently being played out along the U.S.-Mexico border. The letters, presented in Spanish and English, express powerful feelings of hope, uncertainty, and fear among the undocumented travelers as they arrive in the United States and seek work, social support and legal status. The letters from their families in Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador return feelings of hope, love, and support. Translator/editor Siems provides a powerful and lyrical introductory essay that sets the stage for the letters that follow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fictions of Youth is a comprehensive examination of adolescence as an aesthetic, sociological, and ideological category in Pier Paolo Pasolini’s prose, poetry, and cinema. Simona Bondavalli’s book explores the multiple ways in which youth, real and imagined, shaped Pasolini’s poetics and critical positions and shows how Pasolini’s works became the basis for representations of contemporary young people, particularly Italians. From Pasolini’s own coming of age under Fascism in the 1940s to the consumer capitalism of the 1970s, youth stood for innocence, vitality, and rebellion. Pasolini’s representations of youth reflected and shaped those ideas. Offering a systematic treatment of youth and adolescence within Pasolini’s eclectic body of work, Fictions of Youth provides both a broad overview of the changing nature of youth within Italian modernity and an in-depth study of Pasolini’s significant contribution to that transformation.
